Duan Tianlang

Duan Tianlang is the last great master of the main Legacy of Strength and one of the finest Consolidating Equipment designers of his era. Brought back from the edge of death by Long Shiya, he finds a new purpose in Zhou Weiqing: reuniting the divided legacy, completing its two legendary armor traditions, and creating an unprecedented eleventh piece for Zhou's set.

Biography

A dying master given another purpose

Long Shiya brings Duan Tianlang to the Peerless Battalion after spending considerable effort restoring a life already near its end. Duan is one hundred and sixteen and has exhausted much of himself on Consolidating Equipment work; after completing Long Shiya's legendary set, he believed he could not surpass his predecessors and had lost the desire to continue living. The sight of Zhou's Strength Legacy equipment changes that. He recognizes the Dual God Strength Hammers, asks to see the surviving Ringless Ground Purging designs, and is so overwhelmed by the prospect of reuniting the two branches that he tries to kneel to a junior. (Chapters 148–149)

Zhou shows him nine designs but withholds the last until Huyan Aobo can consent. Duan respects that boundary, promises to complete the set, and asks Zhou to return the offshoot branch to the main Legacy of Strength. He does not formally steal Long Shiya's disciple, but declares that he will pass on all his Consolidating Equipment knowledge. The arrangement gives Duan a successor and a purpose, while Zhou gains both a senior relative and the only craftsman then able to turn the inherited designs into usable God Tier scrolls. (Chapters 149–162)

Crafting for a disciple and a restored empire

Duan produces Zhou's fifth Ringless Ground Purging piece and introduces five of his own disciples to the Peerless production team, increasing the rate at which the battalion can receive Consolidated wings. He also acts outside the workshop when necessary: during a Fei Li contest, his mere appearance causes the opposing Zong Stage Master Han Gao to reveal himself as Duan's first disciple and leave Cai Cai's service, while during the restoration campaign Duan uses his Heavenly King aura to guard Zhou's group from an assassin. These interventions enlarge the craft network supporting Heavenly Bow and provide protection that its young state otherwise lacks. (Chapters 179, 187, 193, and 198–200)

Over the year of Zhou's XuanTian absence, Duan completes five more God Tier scrolls and thereby the original ten-piece Ringless Ground Purging Set. The work turns his hair white and leaves his vital essence close to collapse, but he regards the completion of both the Hiltless Heavenly Purging and Ringless Ground Purging sets as the fulfillment of his life's central dream. Zhou responds by using Astral Saint Energy to rebuild his body rather than merely lending temporary vitality, giving him the prospect of decades more life. Duan then learns that Zhou has himself become a God Tier Master, finally resolving his fear that the Legacy of Strength would end without a worthy successor. (Chapters 262–263)

Designing and completing the impossible eleventh piece

Renewed health does not make Duan moderate his obsession. He works without sleep for more than a month and again reaches the edge of death while designing an eleventh Ringless Ground Purging piece—an achievement he believes could raise it above the Boundless Infinitum Set. He can design the scroll and formulate its ink, but his Heavenly King cultivation cannot support the final forging; it requires at least Heavenly Emperor power as well as mastery of Time and Spatial energy. He therefore entrusts execution to Zhou and identifies three drops of the Elven Empress's blood as the solvent capable of reconciling the formula's conflicting ingredients. (Chapters 764–768)

After Zhou returns with the blood, Duan refines the design, mixes the most important Consolidating Ink of his life, and supervises the attempt. His exacting rhythm and ingredient control create a perfect fusion, but the effort again exhausts him, while Zhou must use Time Reversal repeatedly to correct a process beyond his experience. When Zhou begins burning his life force, Duan initially weighs the spiritual cost of failure against the physical danger, then flies up and asks him to stop. The Elven Empress's timely support completes the last stage, allowing Duan to witness the unprecedented scroll and declare that Saint Energy has improved even the design he created. (Chapters 792–800)

Appearance and personality

Duan first appears as a man who seems middle-aged despite being one hundred and sixteen. He is not described as handsome, but has the restrained luster of polished jade and a profound bearing comparable to Long Shiya's. He favors plain black or simple cloth clothing and can suppress his aura so completely that strangers mistake him for an ordinary man. Repeated overwork visibly ages him: his hair turns white and his eyes show deep exhaustion until Zhou's Saint Energy restores his vitality. (Chapters 148, 193, 262, and 765)

Normally gentle, peaceable, and amused by Long Shiya's antics, Duan becomes intensely emotional around his craft. He is willing to discard status, sleep, health, and almost life itself to see a historic design completed. That obsession is not simple selfishness: he trains disciples, respects Huyan Aobo's claim over the offshoot designs, treats Zhou as family, and ultimately chooses Zhou's survival over the scroll when the final attempt becomes lethal. His occasional shamelessness and pride give warmth to a life otherwise defined by austere technical devotion. (Chapters 148–149, 193, 262–263, 765, and 792–800)

Abilities and cultivation

Duan Tianlang is both a Heavenly King and a God Tier Consolidating Equipment Master. His Elemental energy is Spatial, demonstrated when he uses silver-white power to suspend and rotate his ink vessel. Although his cultivation is formidable enough to deter another Heavenly King and let him fly, the corpus repeatedly distinguishes combat rank from craft mastery: his greatest importance lies in design, material preparation, and instruction. (Chapters 149, 193, 200, 262–263, 767, and 792–793)

Strength Legacy mastery

As the sixty-first leader of the main Legacy of Strength, Duan holds the Hiltless Heavenly Purging designs, creates its final pieces for Long Shiya, recognizes the principles behind the offshoot Ringless Ground Purging Set, and teaches multiple disciples who reach high professional ranks. His expertise covers analyzing completed equipment, refining inherited blueprints, matching materials to designs, preparing ink, and producing God Tier scrolls. The recovery of the offshoot designs reignites his creativity, allowing him not merely to preserve old work but to design an eleventh piece beyond the original ten. (Chapters 148–149, 187, 193, 239, 262, and 765)

God Tier creation and its limits

Duan's process demands extraordinary concentration and exact timing. With the Aqua Tide vessel he uses Spatial Heavenly Energy to keep a complex mixture stable while adding increasingly valuable ingredients at lengthening intervals. Small interruption risks destroying the batch, and even successful production can drain his mind and body nearly to death. Saint Energy can restore him, but it does not erase the underlying requirement: as a Heavenly King, he cannot personally forge an eleven-piece Legendary Set scroll whose final stage requires Heavenly Emperor power. (Chapters 262, 765, and 792–797)

He overcomes that limit through collaboration. Duan supplies the design, formula, ink, rhythm, and diagnosis; Zhou supplies higher cultivation, Time Reversal, Spatial control, and Saint Energy; the Elven Empress's blood harmonizes the ingredients and her life energy saves the last stage. The finished scroll is therefore Duan's greatest creation without being a feat he could execute alone, a distinction he openly recognizes. (Chapters 765–800)

Relationships

  • Zhou Weiqing: Duan regards Zhou as half a disciple, the reunifier of the Legacy of Strength, and the miracle that gives his final years meaning. He crafts selflessly for Zhou, while Zhou repeatedly restores his health and ultimately executes Duan's greatest design.
  • Long Shiya: They are lifelong friends who trade insults with easy familiarity. Long Shiya rescues Duan from death, brings him to Zhou, supports his work, and worries over the physical price of his obsession.
  • Huyan Aobo: Huyan holds the offshoot Legacy of Strength that preserved the Ringless Ground Purging designs. Duan accepts Zhou's refusal to reveal the complete legacy without Huyan's approval and seeks reunion rather than appropriation.
  • Elven Empress: Her blood provides the crucial solvent for Duan's eleventh-piece ink, and her intervention lets Zhou complete the scroll without dying. Duan's design is therefore materially dependent on her voluntary aid.

Items

  • Ringless Ground Purging Set: Duan completes the original ten-piece set's remaining scrolls, then designs and supervises creation of an unprecedented eleventh piece. It is the central work of his later life and the achievement through which he surpasses preservation of the inherited legacy.
