Bebe

Bebe is a rare rat-type divine beast who forms an equal soul bond with Linley Baruch while both are young. Introduced as a tiny Shadowmouse with no memory of his parents, he grows from Linley's hidden companion into a Godeater Rat whose speed, defense, and soul-affecting innate ability remain decisive even among Highgods. He calls Linley “Boss,” but their bond operates as lifelong family and partnership rather than ownership. (Chapters 29–806)

His story combines irreverent humor with unusually absolute loyalty. Bebe jokes in danger, boasts about his gifts, and dislikes prolonged cultivation, yet he returns toward threats when Linley is trapped, confronts opponents far above ordinary Deities, and builds a family with Nisse. His lineage ties him to Beirut, while his choices keep him beside Linley from Wushan through the final transformation of the cosmos. (Chapters 29–806)

Biography

Shadowmouse Bond

The young Shadowmouse first lives in the Baruch manor's back courtyard, obeying a half-remembered instruction to remain there and surviving by eating rocks. Linley patiently feeds him meat until the beast treats the boy as family. When Linley prepares to leave Wushan, the Shadowmouse clings to him rather than accept separation and initiates an equal soul-binding contract. Linley names him Bebe, and the newly bonded pair leave for Fenlai together with a mental connection neither fully understands yet. (Chapters 29–30)

Bebe shares Linley's school years as a concealed companion who watches, scouts, eats enthusiastically, and comments on his boss's choices. He has no useful memory of his origin beyond the voice that told him to stay in the courtyard, so the affection Linley showed him becomes his first certain family bond. His mischievous solutions are often more direct than Linley's—for example, he proposes simply taking the Baruch ancestral warblade when negotiation stalls—but he also accepts Linley's restraint and treats their decisions as shared business. (Chapters 75–105)

When Linley's pursuit of Clayde becomes open battle, Bebe attacks beside him despite Kaiser and the Radiant Church's overwhelming intervention. His claws, speed, and tough body let him exchange blows with a powerful warrior, but Linley orders him away rather than let them both be captured. After Doehring's sacrifice, Bebe stays physically close through Linley's collapse, reminds him of Doehring's final wish, and helps turn despair into a decision to live, train, and oppose the Church with patience. (Chapters 143–169)

Divine Heritage and Yulan

Bebe accompanies Linley into the core of the Mountain Range of Magical Beasts after Fenlai, serving as lookout, confidant, and the eager audience for each new heavy-sword breakthrough. He questions techniques in plain terms, celebrates Linley's successes, and remains on his shoulder through a journey that few human experts would attempt. This period confirms that their contract is not passive: Bebe evaluates danger with Linley and shares the long, isolated training that rebuilds his boss after the loss of Doehring. (Chapters 170–171)

By the O'Brien Empire period, Bebe is trusted with responsibilities that would be impossible for ordinary magical beasts. Linley identifies his speed and defense as superior even to renowned Saint-level fighters and plans to rely on him if Wharton's effort to rescue Nina requires entry into the imperial palace. Around the Baruch household, he protects the younger generation, uses darkness energy to stop a destructive shockwave, and takes evident pride in being treated as “Uncle Bebe” rather than merely Linley's pet. (Chapters 241–306)

The Necropolis of the Gods proves how completely Bebe's loyalty overrides self-preservation: after reaching an exit ahead of the others, he charges back when Linley is cut off by countless Abyssal Blade Demons. His later relationship with Beirut gives his extraordinary traits a lineage, and Beirut begins directing his training in the Laws of Darkness with rare resources. Bebe resists the prospect of long confinement but accepts his grandfather's guidance, advances as a divine expert, and still insists on joining Linley and Delia when they leave for the Infernal Realm. (Chapters 360–449)

Nisse and the Infernal Realm

Bebe arrives at Mirrormoon Cliff in the human form of an impish young man wearing a straw hat, beside Linley and Delia Leon. The casual killings, dense population of Gods, and severe restrictions of the Infernal Realm make clear that their old status offers little security. Bebe reacts with alarm but not paralysis: he studies the guards with Linley, keeps communicating through their bond, and accepts the uncertainty of beginning again as one of many newly arrived Deities. (Chapters 450–451)

During the Fiend journey, Bebe and Nisse grow close enough that their companions recognize the possibility of a lasting partnership. Their teasing already resembles the intimacy of a married couple, but the relationship also places Bebe inside the Boyd family's dangers and makes Nisse's safety a responsibility separate from Linley. The Amethyst Mountains test that wider loyalty; Bebe flees with the group through hostile terrain, survives an impact that drives him into the ground without injury, and uses his godspark dagger against stone that few weapons can damage. (Chapters 483–519)

By the journey to the Skyrite Mountains, Bebe is pursuing a fifth profound mystery of Darkness and playfully challenges Linley to see who will advance first. He follows Linley's branch into the Four Divine Beasts clan even when suspicious patrols surround the outsiders, then remains present through the clan's war and its humiliating siege. Beirut's arrival connects Bebe's ancestral and chosen families at the moment the feud finally ends; his concern when Linley falls into sudden insight shows that advancement never displaces the bond governing his priorities. (Chapters 558–618)

Battlefield and Sovereign War

After Linley's Highgod breakthrough, Beirut presents Bebe with a dagger forged from darkness-type divine sparks, matching the element in which Bebe has become a Deity. Bebe soon reaches his own Highgod breakthrough, but he continues to define himself publicly through his relationship with Linley: while watching his disguised boss win a hundred battles in Tartarus, he proudly insists that “Ley” is his boss even when spectators dismiss the claim. His confidence is humorous, but it is also based on direct knowledge of Linley's resolve and power. (Chapters 619–657)

The Planar Battlefield places Bebe alongside Reisgem and Reihom against commander-class enemies. Bebe can consume divine sparks—a Godeater trait he shares with Beirut—and uses them to strengthen his body even while Reisgem mocks his impatience with ordinary cultivation. When Magnus, Oman, and Chegwin surround the group, Bebe recognizes that his own defenses make him a less vulnerable target, warns Linley to flee, and then refuses to stand aside when Magnus announces that Linley will be killed. (Chapter 696)

In later years, Bebe's marriage to Nisse gives him a home within the extended family that Linley's victories preserve. He accompanies the investigation of the Overgod talismans, retains his distrust of Salomon while visiting for Nisse's sake, and lives with her peacefully in the Skyrite Mountains after the great conflicts. When Linley leaves the original cosmos, Bebe's inability to sense him convinces the gathered family that their bond has been severed; Bebe is then the first to feel Linley's return and the first to call out in joy. (Chapters 738–806)

Appearance and personality

In his original form, Bebe is a very small black rat-type magical beast with beady dark eyes, sharp claws, white fangs, and fur strong enough to withstand attacks far beyond what his size suggests. As a youngster he travels on Linley's shoulder or hides inside his clothes, where his excitement is easier to hear than to see. His divine human form resembles a delicate, impish young man, and he commonly appears wearing a straw hat that reinforces the contrast between his casual manner and lethal abilities. (Chapters 29–30, 241, 450–451)

Bebe is playful, proud, impatient, and direct. He delights in food, later treats divine sparks almost like snacks, boasts about his speed and toughness, and would often prefer a quick fight or theft to careful diplomacy. He can also misread danger because his confidence is supported by genuinely exceptional defenses. Those traits never make him unreliable where Linley or Nisse is concerned: he notices changes in Linley's mood, challenges threats without waiting for advantage, and puts himself back in danger after already reaching safety. (Chapters 75–105, 143–169, 360, 696)

His maturation adds responsibility without erasing the humor. Bebe accepts Beirut's training despite disliking confinement, builds a durable marriage with Nisse, and makes uncomfortable concessions such as visiting Salomon because his wife's feelings matter more than his grudge. At the same time, he continues teasing allies and announcing Linley's feats with boyish certainty. The result is not a transformation into solemnity, but a widening of the circle for which his fierce loyalty operates. (Chapters 445–449, 483, 558, 738–806)

Abilities and cultivation

Bebe's earliest advantages are extreme speed, defense, sharp claws, and the equal soul bond that permits mental communication with Linley across great distances. Even before reaching the Saint level, his fur can endure blows capable of injuring Linley's transformed body; after advancement, Linley judges him faster than Olivier and exceptionally difficult to harm. He uses this combination as a scout and close-range attacker, darting past larger opponents, surviving counterattacks, and protecting less durable companions with darkness energy. (Chapters 29–30, 143, 241–306)

As a Godeater Rat, Bebe possesses a rare innate divine ability that threatens the soul and divine sparks of opponents who lack sufficient protection. The same heritage lets him consume divine sparks directly and use them to strengthen his body, a capacity described as unique to him and Beirut. These gifts are powerful but not absolute: targets with soul-protecting Sovereign artifacts or equivalent safeguards can resist the decisive effect, so Bebe and Linley still have to identify defenses and coordinate physical attacks. (Chapters 445–620, 696)

Bebe cultivates the Laws of Darkness under Beirut's guidance. Beirut first confines him with a treasure intended to help him master the Essence of Darkness, and Bebe later approaches a fifth profound mystery before becoming a Highgod. His natural preference is action over extended meditation, yet his lineage, accumulated divine sparks, and darkness training make him a combatant who remains relevant at the commander level. The darkness godspark dagger Beirut makes for him gives those abilities a weapon designed around his own divine element. (Chapters 445–449, 558, 619–620, 696)

Relationships

  • Linley Baruch: Linley earns Bebe's trust through care before either knows the Shadowmouse's true lineage. Their equal contract supports constant mental communication, but the deeper relationship is chosen family: Bebe calls Linley “Boss,” shares his travels and dangers, returns toward the Necropolis when Linley is trapped, and refuses to abandon him before Magnus. The bond becomes a cosmic measure in the final chapter, when its disappearance and return reveal that Linley has left and re-entered their cosmos. (Chapters 29–30, 75, 360, 696, 806)

  • Nisse: Nisse gives Bebe a partnership that is not mediated through Linley. Their playful companionship during the Infernal Realm journey develops into marriage, and Bebe adjusts his conduct around her needs even when he remains openly hostile toward Salomon. Their later quiet life in the Skyrite Mountains shows that Bebe's appetite for adventure can coexist with a stable home and that victory matters partly because it protects the family they chose together. (Chapters 483, 738–800)

  • Beirut: Beirut explains Bebe's identity as a Godeater Rat and becomes both grandfather and cultivation guide. He provides resources unavailable to ordinary Deities, directs Bebe's mastery of Darkness, supplies divine sparks, and forges his dagger. Bebe complains about the discipline involved but trusts Beirut's intentions, while Beirut's interventions repeatedly protect the wider family Bebe shares with Linley. Their relationship turns an unknown childhood origin into a lineage without replacing Bebe's chosen bond. (Chapters 445–449, 617–620, 696)

  • Delia Leon, Reisgem, and the Baruch household: Delia travels beside Bebe from Yulan to the Infernal Realm and treats him as part of the family rather than an attached beast. Reisgem becomes a battlefield companion who can mock Bebe's training habits while trusting him in lethal encounters. Across the household, children call him “Uncle Bebe,” and he responds as a guardian whose status rests on participation in family life as much as on bloodline or power. (Chapters 241–306, 450–519, 696, 800–806)

Items

The Moon Ring is the token associated with Bebe, Linley, and Delia during their first Fiend trial in the Infernal Realm. Its importance is practical rather than ornamental: the newcomers need to complete the mission and retain the required proof while navigating enemies far more experienced with Higher-Plane rules. For Bebe, the ring belongs to the stage when adventure becomes formal Fiend work and when the three-person Yulan group has to operate as a disciplined unit rather than rely only on raw strength. (Chapters 450–519)

Bebe's Black Dagger is his signature close-range weapon. In the Amethyst Mountains, the godspark blade can cut into exceptionally tough stone, helping establish that it is more than an ordinary knife. Beirut later explains that he forged the dagger from darkness-type divine sparks because Darkness is the element in which Bebe became a Deity. The weapon therefore links Bebe's natural speed and claws to his cultivated divine element and to Beirut's direct investment in his growth. (Chapters 519, 619–620)
