Gerard Moonlight
Gerard Moonlight is a former lycanthrope heir and martial artist whose pursuit of power leads to twenty years of secret imprisonment, a bitter return against his own family, and his voluntary acceptance of Famine to become the Rider's incarnation. The resulting Famine Knight retains Gerard's body, memories, techniques, and hatred, but is increasingly presented as Famine controlling a damaged vessel rather than Gerard acting as an unchanged person.
Biography
Companion, Exile, and Famine
Gerard is Elaine Moonlight's older brother, the former heir to the lycanthrope throne, and the uncle of Chris and Caitlin. He had once been a warrior in whom the lycanthropes took pride, but he became unable to accept the limit of his growth and pursued strength outside Divine Beast Authority. That obsession culminated in a palace disaster that cost hundreds of lives and more than half the royal guard. Elaine could not bring herself to execute him, so the royal family erased his record, announced that he had died of illness, and confined him in the deepest part of the Grey Tower for twenty years. (Chapter 77)
When Gerard escapes, the circumstances are deliberately unresolved. In-gong remembers an optional Knight Saga event in which Zephyr freed a much weaker Gerard to destabilize the lycanthropes, but he has no proof that the same event occurred in the present history. The current Gerard is also fundamentally different from that game version: the original was not a Famine Knight, whereas this Gerard arrives at the lycanthrope camp wrapped in Famine's black power. In-gong later concludes that Gerard appears near the prepared Moonlight Extract to restore his collapsing body. Gerard recognizes Chris and Caitlin and briefly speaks to them with warmth, yet refuses Chris's judgment that the royal Gerard died twenty years earlier. He then attacks both relatives, using dark energy, Divine Beast Authority, Beast Form, Arang, and Drain to overcome their coordinated assault. The imprisonment has consumed much of his original aura and damaged his body, but Famine's power suppresses surrounding aura and replenishes him by stealing life. In-gong and Carack eventually break his body and force him to escape through a wide-area Drain that withers the land and devastates nearby soldiers. (Chapters 77–82 and 143)
His escape leaves him unable to retain what he drains, and lycanthrope pursuers soon corner and impale him. In that crisis, Gerard dwells on twenty years of darkness and directs his resentment at Elaine, her children, and the Conquest Knight who stopped him. When Famine asks whether he will finally accept, Gerard relinquishes his remaining pride and allows it into his soul. The narration says that he is no longer Gerard in a pure sense: Famine swallows his heart and soul, mixes with him, and turns the man formerly called Gerard into its incarnation. His new garden of draining kills the surrounding trackers and lets the transformed Knight rise and continue despite Gerard's otherwise terminal wounds. (Chapter 81)
The incarnation later enters an indigenous ruin, drains its crew, destroys or consumes the ruin's magic and life, and advances toward its lowest level. The party later finds a crystallized mass of magic there and concludes that the Famine Knight intended to absorb it to regain strength, paralleling Gerard's pursuit of the Moonlight Extract. Gerard's memories recognize the Black Flame Dragon and guide the Knight's Divine Beast Authority, while its hostility toward In-gong focuses the attack on Felicia. When Silvan opens the fairy to protect her, the Famine Knight cannot consume the entire flood of magic at once and must rely on Gerard's techniques and memories to survive the prolonged fight. (Chapters 137–139 and 143)
Famine's Defeat and Legacy
Silvan destroys much of the vessel before In-gong arrives, leaving black smoke to fill the missing parts of Gerard's werewolf body. In-gong's Conquest suppresses Drain, counters Arang, and exploits the mismatch between Gerard's remembered mastery and the Famine Knight's imperfect use of it. As the vessel is shattered, the Famine Knight begins giving up Gerard's body and the power of Famine is forced outward. Famine's cry against Conquest and its ancient grievance toward that opposing Rider are explicitly Famine's, while the final curses drawn from Gerard's memories carry the host's hatred. In-gong's last blow completely destroys Gerard's body; only then does Famine lose its container and get sent away. (Chapters 139–141)
Gerard's death closes the lycanthropes' hidden dynastic crisis. Elaine thanks In-gong for resolving the problem she could not face again, offers compensation, and later gives him the Lycanthrope Tears in exchange for killing Gerard. The consequences extend beyond the family: the encounter forces Silvan to open the fairy, and saving him brings both Silvan and Felicia into the King's Knights. After the battle with Gerard, Chris later manifests a partial Beast Form despite his mixed blood, while Silvan subsequently reproduces the lightning technique he first used against the Famine Knight. These are consequences of resisting Gerard and Famine, not powers or achievements that Gerard intentionally passes on. (Chapters 141, 148, 176, 190, and 207)
In-gong later judges the Famine Knight to have been a relatively new and inexperienced Knight: he had no apostles, and his Famine power had been weaker than In-gong's developed Conquest. Famine itself does not die with Gerard, but after expulsion it cannot intervene for a time; the Death Knight later says that the Famine Knight disappeared before joining the other Riders. Gerard, by contrast, never returns after his body becomes ash. When In-gong considers whether Rider influence might explain differences from the original game history, he thinks of Gerard becoming the Famine Knight, but reaches no firm conclusion about who caused either Gerard's transformation or escape. (Chapters 141, 167, 209, 218, and 229)
Appearance and personality
At his return, Gerard is a grey-haired male lycanthrope with a long scar down his left cheek. He wears grey clothes, fights unarmed, and is surrounded by an ominous black aura that combines Famine's power with the resentment he accumulated in confinement. Beast Form swells his upper body and gives his movements and voice a more bestial quality. After accepting Famine, damage no longer maps cleanly onto an ordinary living body: black smoke can fill missing sections, and his remains become black ash once the vessel is destroyed. His appearance before the Grey Tower and the precise physical changes caused by full incarnation are not described in detail. (Chapters 78–81, 139, and 141)
Gerard's defining trait is an inability to accept limits. His earlier pride as the lycanthropes' foremost warrior turns into obsession, and isolation converts that obsession into grievance against the sister who replaced him, the younger generation, and anyone who blocks his return. Even so, his first words to Chris and Caitlin retain a trace of familial recognition and warmth, showing that his hostility is not simple amnesia. His final voluntary surrender to Famine is therefore both an act of agency and the point at which that agency is conquered: afterward, Gerard's memories, skills, ridicule, and hatred remain active, but the narration increasingly calls the body a doll controlled by Famine. (Chapters 77–81 and 139–140)
Powers and abilities
Gerard begins as one of the greatest lycanthrope martial artists and later combines that foundation with the parasitic, life-consuming power of Famine. His post-incarnation feats belong to the composite Famine Knight and cannot always be assigned cleanly to Gerard alone.
Divine Beast Authority and lycanthrope combat
Gerard is remembered as the strongest lycanthrope of his generation and an especially accomplished practitioner of Divine Beast Authority. He fights without a weapon, using explosive aura, footwork, close-range combinations, and sudden changes of direction to withstand Chris and Caitlin together and later maneuver around Silvan's magical vortex. Beast Form enlarges his upper body and sharply raises his physical pressure, allowing him to overpower Chris in a direct contest. His skill survives incarnation mainly as memory: Famine can consult Gerard's experience and reproduce the movements, but the gap between remembered mastery and a different controlling will creates exploitable hesitation. (Chapters 77–79 and 139–140)
His signature advanced technique is Arang, a wolf-shaped strike and secret principle of Divine Beast Authority. Rather than stopping at surface impact, it enters the target and tears through aura circulation from within; against In-gong, a level-up restores the visible trauma but does not repair the disrupted aura flow, and against Silvan it leaves his aura broken before the fairy is opened. Arang can be mirrored, blocked, or endured by an opponent with the appropriate technique and sufficient aura, as In-gong demonstrates in their final fight. The source does not establish its exact range, cost, or a formal reuse interval. (Chapters 79–80, 138, and 140)
Drain and Famine's suppression
Drain steals life force through Gerard's hand, rapidly withering a victim while transferring power to him. Before full incarnation, maintaining contact takes time, and the energy cannot permanently repair his prison-damaged body: after his first defeat, newly stolen vitality leaks away as though poured into a broken container. He can also release Famine's darkness as projectiles and a suppressive field. That power slows aura, interferes with its activation, consumes magic and vitality, and can extinguish living surroundings; his emergency area Drain withers vegetation, leaves the ground drought-grey, and drains or maims soldiers caught at its edge. (Chapters 78–81)
After incarnation, Famine applies the same principle to people, spirits, spells, and ancient magical structures. It can erase part of a body through contact, feed on a ruin's stored power, extinguish a wind spirit, and form darkness that absorbs incoming magic. Absorption is not unlimited or instantaneous: Silvan's opened fairy produces more magic than Famine can devour at once, while Conquest's power directly offsets the Famine field and prevents it from draining In-gong's aura. The text does not quantify how much energy can be stored, how efficiently different forms of power are converted, or how far the ordinary suppressive field reaches. (Chapters 137–140)
Incarnation and garden of draining
By accepting Famine into his soul, Gerard becomes an incarnation rather than merely a selected Knight. The immediate result is a garden of draining, a domain that removes the original need to seize victims one by one and drains everything within its area. It kills the trackers surrounding him and restores enough substance for the transformed Knight to continue despite catastrophic wounds. Later, Famine replaces missing portions of the body with black smoke, making the vessel unusually difficult to disable through ordinary injury. The domain's exact radius, duration, activation cost, and whether it can distinguish targets are not established. (Chapters 81 and 139)
Incarnation also produces a divided control structure. Famine supplies the ancient memories, destructive purpose, and supernatural energy, while Gerard supplies current-world knowledge, martial memories, and personal resentment. Gerard's memories can warn the Knight to retreat or explain an opponent's technique, but by the final battle the narration explicitly says that the Famine Knight is not Gerard and that Famine controls the body like a doll. This preserved memory is tactically valuable, yet the imperfect handoff between memory and controller slows reactions and prevents the composite from fully reproducing Gerard's former capability. (Chapters 137–140)
Limits, defeat, and latest state
Gerard's original body has severe structural limits. Twenty years in the Grey Tower consume much of his aura and leave him dependent on stolen vitality, while the damage inflicted by In-gong, Carack, and Silvan progressively removes functional limbs and body sections. Famine can compensate with darkness but cannot instantly absorb overwhelming magic, overcome Conquest's opposing authority, or reproduce every nuance of Gerard's technique. Silvan's fairy-powered sword destroys half the vessel; In-gong's Conquest, elder-dragon armour, and superior aura then suppress Famine and finish the remaining body. (Chapters 77, 80–81, and 139–141)
Gerard's latest state is final: his body is completely destroyed, and no later chapter shows his consciousness, memories, martial ability, or Drain returning independently. Famine survives the separation but is expelled and unable to intervene for a time; that survival belongs to the Rider, not to Gerard. In-gong's later assessment that the Famine Knight lacked apostles and experience helps explain the incarnation's comparative weakness, but the corpus provides no complete level, formal skill list, or measure of how much further Gerard could have progressed. (Chapters 140–141, 167, 209, and 218)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Supreme lycanthrope martial artist | 77 (revealed) | Returns after twenty years of imprisonment with master-level Divine Beast Authority and Arang, but a ruined body and depleted aura sharply limit him. |
| Famine empowerment and Drain | 78–80 | Gains life-stealing contact, suppressive darkness, and emergency area Drain, yet stolen vitality leaks from his structurally damaged body. |
| Incarnation of Famine | 81 | Accepts Famine into his soul, gaining an area-wide garden of draining and smoke replacement for destroyed flesh while ceding increasing control to the Rider. |
| Vessel destroyed | 141 | Conquest and Silvan's fairy overwhelm the composite body; Gerard never reappears, while Famine's separate survival does not restore him. |
Relationships
- Elaine Moonlight: Elaine is Gerard's younger sister and successor. She cannot execute the brother she loves after his palace disaster, instead hiding him in the Grey Tower; Gerard later interprets that choice as theft of everything that was his and fixes much of his resentment on her. After his death, she thanks In-gong, offers compensation, and later gives him the Lycanthrope Tears in exchange for killing Gerard. (Chapters 77, 81, 148, and 176)
- Chris: Gerard is Chris's maternal uncle. Chris already treats stopping Gerard as an internal lycanthrope duty before the attack. Gerard notices Elaine in Chris's face and initially speaks with a degree of warmth, but refuses Chris's claim that the old Gerard is already dead, defeats him, and nearly drains him. After the battle, Chris later manifests a new power that lets his mixed blood produce a partial Beast Form. (Chapters 77–80 and 190)
- Caitlin: Gerard recognizes Caitlin as his niece before attacking her alongside Chris. He overcomes her despite her speed and coordinated pincer tactics, leaving her unconscious until In-gong intervenes. The encounter makes Gerard both a family shame she must confront and a direct example of how lycanthrope power can be corrupted by the refusal to accept limits. (Chapters 77–80)
- In-gong: In-gong blocks Gerard's first return, countering Divine Beast Authority with Divine Sura Authority and leaving his already-damaged body near collapse. Gerard personally resents that defeat, while Famine separately hates In-gong as Conquest's Knight. In their second battle, In-gong exploits both the vessel's injuries and the split between Gerard's memories and Famine's control, destroys the body, and expels Famine. (Chapters 79–81 and 139–141)
- Carack: Carack answers In-gong's Call during the first battle and crushes Gerard's damaged chest with his battle axe. When Gerard releases area Drain to escape, Carack grabs In-gong and turns his own body between the prince and the expanding power, helping turn Gerard's attempted recovery into a desperate retreat. (Chapter 80)
- Felicia: The Famine Knight attacks Felicia in the indigenous ruin and regards killing her as a means of hurting In-gong. Her danger drives Silvan to release the fairy, and the aftermath binds both siblings to In-gong's King's Knights. The malice toward In-gong combines Gerard's remembered hatred with Famine's hostility, so it should not be treated as an independently established personal history between Gerard and Felicia. (Chapters 138–141)
- Silvan: Silvan fights the Famine Knight to protect Felicia, using the fairy and an enchanted sword to destroy half of its composite body. Famine relies on Gerard's remembered martial skill to survive and gradually consume Silvan's excessive magic, but Silvan holds long enough for In-gong to arrive. Their clash is the immediate condition for Gerard's final destruction and for Silvan's entry into the King's Knights. (Chapters 138–141)
Items
- No notable personal item is established for Gerard. He fights unarmed through Divine Beast Authority and Famine's power; the objects associated with his defeat or the surrounding conflicts belong to other characters rather than to him. (Chapters 78–80 and 137–140)
