He Ling — Against the Gods

He Ling is the surviving princess of the Wood Spirit Royal Family, elder sister of He Lin, and the living poison spirit of the Sky Poison Pearl. The destruction of her people changes a gentle healer into a woman sustained by vengeance, but her bond with Yun Che eventually gives that grief a purpose beyond retribution. From within the pearl, she becomes his constant companion, cultivates its medicinal world, and safeguards him across the wars of the God Realm and the Abyss.

Biography

The last royal wood spirit

He Ling is separated from her younger brother He Lin while human hunters pursue the royal wood-spirit bloodline for its uniquely pure Wood Spirit Orbs. Shen Xi rescues her and shelters her in the forbidden land of the Dragon God Realm, where she tends spirit plants and lives beyond the reach of ordinary traffickers. He Lin continues searching for her, and his dying request sends Yun Che toward a sister whose name he promises to remember. (Chapter 1077; Chapters 1300 and 1304)

Their meeting gives He Ling the answer she most fears. Yun Che recognizes her from He Lin's description and reveals the boy's death and final entrustment, leaving her as the last known bearer of the royal line. She initially turns her grief inward, but Yun Che's own remorse and respect for He Lin prevent the confession from becoming a simple exchange of blame. Shen Xi's disciple and the choice of vengeance

He Ling remains under Shen Xi's protection while Yun Che recovers and cultivates in the forbidden land. Her wood-spirit affinity lets her prepare exceptionally pure spirit liquids, sustain medicinal plants, and assist the long process of strengthening his body. The work returns movement and color to a life stunned by loss, and her conversations with Yun Che reveal a direct, compassionate temperament beneath her reserve. (Chapters 1309 and 1313–1321)

The discovery that the Brahma Monarch God Realm helped destroy her people and that Qianye Ying'er is tied to the slaughter transforms grief into hatred. Shen Xi warns that revenge will change her, yet He Ling refuses a peace that would leave the royal wood spirits' killers untouched. Because her natural life is not suited to attacking a king realm, she chooses another path: entrusting her existence to Yun Che and waiting for the Sky Poison Pearl to regain the power through which vengeance can be enacted. Becoming the Sky Poison Pearl's spirit

While Yun Che is still recovering in the Dragon God Realm's Forbidden Land, He Ling accepts fusion with the Sky Poison Pearl and becomes its new poison spirit. The choice binds her life to the artifact's internal world and to Yun Che, granting the pearl a conscious keeper capable of tending its plants, refining medicine, and directing functions that had remained limited without a spirit. She enters the bond willingly, treating it as both the means to honor He Lin and a permanent promise to accompany Yun Che. (Chapter 1323)

The Moon God Realm's apparent destruction of Blue Pole Star and Yun Che's flight into the Northern Divine Region place He Ling beside him when nearly every visible tie to his former life seems severed. She witnesses his physical collapse and hardening temperament from within the pearl, supplying medicine and a private voice that can address him without courtly distance. Her presence is especially important because the pearl remains accessible even when he is isolated, disguised, or surrounded by enemies. (Chapters 1531–1545, 1600, and 1603)

Northern conquest and revenge on Brahma Monarch

He Ling's royal wood-spirit power and the pearl's restored poison become central to the campaign against the Eastern Divine Region. Yun Che introduces the poison into the Brahma Monarch God Realm under conditions that its victims cannot easily detect or purge. When it blooms, the threat forces Qianye Fantian and the Brahma leadership into submission, making the killers and beneficiaries of the wood-spirit massacre experience the helplessness they imposed on her race. He Ling actively permits the poison to serve that judgment rather than remaining a passive source of power. (Chapters 1752–1758)

Vengeance does not restore He Lin or the royal family, but it ends the single purpose that had kept He Ling from despair. She continues serving as the pearl's spirit afterward because her relationship with Yun Che has become a chosen life, not merely a bargain for revenge. During the imperial war and his accession as emperor, she tends the medicinal world, monitors his condition, and helps preserve the resources on which his allies depend. (Chapters 1758–1896)

Companion within the Abyss

When Yun Che is cast into the Abyss, He Ling remains with him through the Sky Poison Pearl. Her hidden presence preserves a fragment of his home and gives him access to medicines, storage, purification, and counsel while he must conceal his origins. She can observe his condition and speak with him away from the Abyss's rulers, making her one of the few companions who knows both the full history of the God Realm and the identity he assumes in exile. The Abyss also tests the limits of their bond. He Ling cannot simply solve dangers that exceed the pearl's current poison or expose herself without risking Yun Che's secrets, so her aid is often medical, logistical, and emotional rather than openly martial. She nevertheless remains an active custodian of his hidden resources through the latest events, continuing the promise made when she fused with the pearl. (Chapters 1955 and 2189)

Appearance and personality

He Ling has the refined features of the wood-spirit royal line, long green hair, pointed ears, and brilliant emerald eyes. Plant life responds naturally to her presence, bending toward her and reflecting the vitality carried in her aura. Grief initially leaves those eyes dull and remote; renewed purpose gradually restores the warmth Yun Che glimpses when they first speak at length. (Chapters 1300, 1309, and 1317)

She is gentle, diligent, and instinctively protective of living things, but the massacre of her race proves that gentleness is not an inability to hate. Once committed, she accepts an irreversible fusion and the moral burden of lethal poison rather than asking another person to avenge her while she remains untouched by the choice. With Yun Che she can be earnest, worried, and quietly reproachful, offering companionship that is intimate without demanding public recognition. (Chapters 1310–1323 and 1752–1758)

Abilities and cultivation

As a royal wood spirit, He Ling possesses extraordinary life energy and a natural affinity for plants, medicines, healing liquids, and purification. She can cultivate rare ingredients within the Sky Poison Pearl's internal world and concentrate their properties with a purity difficult for human alchemists to reproduce. These talents make her especially valuable in recovery and preparation rather than direct battle. (Chapters 1314, 1321, and 1323)

Fusion makes her the consciousness that operates the Sky Poison Pearl's poison, purification, storage, and medicinal environment. She can assist Yun Che from within the artifact and help control poisons powerful enough to threaten high-level divine cultivators when the necessary conditions are prepared. The pearl's strength is not unlimited: its greatest effects depend on accumulated power, delivery, time, and Yun Che's strategy, while He Ling herself remains vulnerable through her dependence on the pearl and its bearer.
