Yuan Chengdun

Yuan Chengdun is the Yuan Family’s celebrated Foundation cultivator and Yuan Fuyao’s father. His alliance with Yuanjiao grows through shared battles, while his effort to rescue Yuan Tuan and secure his son’s future ends in a tragedy his own relatives help bring about.

Biography

A formidable ally and a failed rescue

Huyuan brings Chengdun to help Yuanjiao subdue a man-eating pig demon. Already at mid Foundation, Chengdun overwhelms it with two short rods and Sprawling Azure Mountain’s suppression of demonic essence. He stays nearby until the promised pill and secret-technique exchange is completed, then offers further help without ceremony. Their later attack on Mount Yue places him against Fu Daimu, whom he relentlessly batters until the allied siege succeeds. His share of the spoils and evident concern for Yuanjiao strengthen a friendship built on honorable cooperation. (Chapters 462–467 and 472–475)

By his sixties Chengdun has attained late Foundation and is the family’s foremost genius. As Yuan Tuan disappears and the household sinks into factional disputes, he prepares to leave for the Eastern Sea. Before departing he seeks protection for his only son Fuyao through a marriage to Yuexiang. Her willingness to shelter Fuyao even if the marriage fails moves him, and he leaves generous gifts while insisting she must not be forced. His confidence as a warrior cannot remove his guilt over the child he has rarely guided. (Chapters 631–632)

The supposed rescue is a deception: Huyuan later admits that Chengdun was sent because his Azure Manifestation cultivation could serve the Dragon Clan’s plans. Stones corresponding to the remains left by Sprawling Azure Mountain and the recovery of his copper rods lead Xizhi to conclude that he has perished. Meanwhile, Huyuan and Hudu break the protection arrangement to align Fuyao with another faction. Chengdun’s martial inheritance survives, but the safeguards he sought for his son are undone by the elders he trusted. (Chapters 691–693, 708–709, 730 and 1056–1057)

Appearance and personality

He is strongly built and bearded, with thick eyebrows and a deep voice likened to mountain stone. Initially reserved, he becomes warm and straightforward with trusted allies. His generosity and martial confidence coexist with regret over his son’s upbringing and concern about the Yuan Family’s future. (Chapters 462, 467 and 631–632)

Abilities and cultivation

His Sprawling Azure Mountain foundation disperses demonic essence, preventing a subdued demon from using its spells effectively. He wields two short rods as powerful hammers and employs a crystalline hide to capture a blood-and-bone attack. Already mid Foundation when introduced, he reaches late Foundation by his sixties. His staff art, Subduing Demons In Green Mountains, is later assessed as likely Grade Four and valuable as a family inheritance. The foundation also transforms its owner’s body into characteristic Demon Suppressing Stones after death, providing the evidence used to infer his fate. (Chapters 462, 465, 631, 691 and 1057)

Items

He uses a pair of Demon Subduing Copper Rods and a crystalline hide against demonic attacks. His generous betrothal gifts are left to protect Fuyao rather than to force Yuexiang’s consent. The rods are later recovered from the Eastern Sea and returned to the Li. (Chapters 465, 632 and 708–730)
