When Wu

When Wu is a senior Shepherd Peak disciple who manages Purple Smoke Gate’s relationship with the Li Family. His tact and practical concern for younger disciples make him a useful intermediary, but also leave him responsible for failures caused elsewhere in the sect.

Biography

Cultivating ties and answering for the gate

When Wu escorts Quexi and Queyi during their entry into Purple Smoke Gate and seeks a meeting with the Li head. He explains the gate’s plans to protect the lake, its control over the girls’ future marriages and the difference in opportunities between Shepherd and Purple Gale Peaks. On the journey back, he advises Quexi to preserve both her sect and family ties, comparing them to the golden and white talismans he carries. His worldly pragmatism is tempered by self-deprecating warnings that she should not copy his crooked habits. (Chapters 1189–1192)

He continues acting as an envoy, delivering Tinglan’s message through a command token and bringing both girls’ letters home. His flattering reports emphasize their successes while softening the visible inequality between their places in the sect. Reassignment to the Eastern Sea then places him among disciples and territories unsettled by changes in the earth veins. (Chapters 1204, 1212–1213 and 1234)

When Zhouwei discovers the demands being imposed on Queyi, When Wu must answer for Purple Gale Peak’s neglect despite having only recently arrived. He accepts responsibility, admits the poor atmosphere and seeks to mend the relationship. He privately explains the disgrace of Tingqian’s old lineage and the hope that Queyi can replace its failing succession. Later, Tinglan entrusts Minggong to him for a rear assignment; he also places the weaker Chengqi far to the south, though the fall of Mount Xiaoshi turns that intended refuge into a dangerous front. (Chapters 1297–1299 and 1450)

Appearance and personality

He is middle-aged with bright eyes and carries a pair of talismans at his waist. Charming, tactful and attentive to rank, he also takes genuine trouble to maintain the girls’ family correspondence. His diplomacy becomes visibly strained when Zhouwei demands answers for Queyi’s treatment. (Chapters 1191–1192, 1212 and 1297–1298)

Abilities and cultivation

He is explicitly at late Foundation Establishment when he escorts the girls. A golden talisman is more formidable than his white one, yet he retains both as useful protections. His sect command token carries a wisp of purple smoke that manifests Tinglan’s image; it is a delegated message, not his own Purple Mansion divine ability. His demonstrated responsibilities are escort, negotiation and overseas assignments rather than a new realm breakthrough. (Chapters 1189, 1192 and 1204)
