Madam Dou
Madam Dou is Li Xuanxuan’s primary wife and the mother of Li Yuanxiu and Li Yuanping. Her authority combines household management, cultivation and the agricultural influence of her birth family, but cannot protect her sons from loss. (Chapters 217, 298–299, 305–306, and 546)
Biography
Household authority and the loss of her sons
The death of Yuanxiu strikes while Dou is pregnant with Yuanping. When the suppressed truth reaches her, grief precipitates a premature birth, leaving the younger son with a congenital deficiency that shapes his life. She nevertheless remains a powerful household figure: she keeps Xuanxuan’s numerous wives and concubines in order, advances her cultivation and helps her birth relatives prosper in agriculture. Her protection does not mean indulgence. She rebukes Dou Yi’s arrogance and warns Yuanping about managing branches, checking the assumption that a kinship connection entitles the Dou to unchecked privileges. (Chapters 217, 229, 298–299, and 305–306)
Her responsibility extends beyond domestic politics. During an attack she arrives with Xiao Guiluan and Li Qilang, catches the injured Xu Gongming and tries to dispel the hostile qi damaging his face. After the fighting she cradles the exhausted Xuanxuan. Decades later she supports the dying Yuanping, now facing the loss of both sons despite all her cultivation and influence. Her hair has turned white, and her third-layer Qi cultivation has no further path open. Her death is later remembered among the family’s losses. (Chapters 422–423, 546, and 642)
Appearance and personality
At the height of her household authority she wears luxurious clothing and retains a youthful appearance. In her forties she looks closer to thirty, with elegant bearing and nails dyed with balsam. The later white hair of the mother grieving Yuanping marks a stark change from that cultivated dignity. Her speech can be severe, but her attachment to her sons and husband is unmistakable. (Chapters 299, 306, and 546)
Abilities and cultivation
She reaches the peak of Embryonic Breathing before entering Qi cultivation. By Ximing’s return she is recognized as a formidable Qi cultivator, and by Yuanping’s death she is at the third layer with no further advancement available. Her attempt to remove hostile qi from Xu Gongming demonstrates practical assistance during battle, without establishing a named healing technique. She also governs the competing interests of the household and her influential Dou relatives. (Chapters 299, 305–306, 414, 423, and 546)
