Dou Yi
Dou Yi is Madam Dou’s nephew, first assigned to serve at the side of her son, Li Yuanping. His father’s bid to extend the Dou Family’s influence puts him between two households, but years of service turn the nervous messenger into a trusted Li-family aide. (Chapters 298–299, 354, 500, 631)
Biography
A cousin caught between household loyalties
When a regular messenger falls ill, Dou Yi takes his place and identifies himself to the Li family head as Madam Dou’s paternal nephew. His assignment beside Li Yuanping is part of his father’s effort to place Dou relatives in the Clan Affairs Courtyard, a route to greater influence. Yuanping sees the maneuver and tells Dou Yi to serve him rather than the Dou Family. Dou Yi struggles to blame his father, yet he relays Yuanping’s warning to Madam Dou; she slaps him and sends him back with a matching rebuke for his father. He accepts both households’ demands without open defiance, and his cultivation does not give him confidence in front of Yuanping or his aunt. (Chapters 298–299, 302, 305)
A reliable aide through changing generations
Dou Yi stays beside Yuanping for nearly a decade. As Yuanping bears the strain of family administration and worries over the fragile heir Li Ximing, Dou Yi carefully passes on Madam Dou’s requests that he rest and resume cultivation, then continues bringing reports about the family’s neighbors. After Yuanping’s generation, Dou Yi appears older and more dependable at Li Xicheng’s side; later, Li Chengliao entrusts him with a discreet warning mission to protect Milin Prefecture’s people and spirit fields from the Yu Family’s infighting. His role shifts from an extension of his father’s political plan to a trusted servant of the Li household. (Chapters 336, 354, 426, 500, 631, and 1133)
Appearance and personality
Dou Yi first appears in armor while serving as a messenger. He is timid before Madam Dou and Li Yuanping, and initially hesitates to oppose his father’s ambitions. His anxious courtesy does not prevent him from speaking up for Yuanping’s health or from carrying out sensitive assignments. Years later his graying hair and more mature bearing reflect his long service. (Chapters 298–299, 305, 336, 500)
Abilities and cultivation
Dou Yi possesses cultivation, but no realm, personal technique, or distinctive combat ability is established. His demonstrated strengths are practical: he attends the Clan Affairs Courtyard, conveys family intelligence, and carries out his superiors’ instructions. (Chapters 305, 336, 426, 631)
Relationships
- Madam Dou: His paternal aunt and the Li family’s matriarch by marriage. She disciplines him for his father’s political interference. (Chapters 298–299)
- Li Yuanping: His cousin and first Li-family superior. Yuanping demands that he choose the work assigned to him over his father’s factional ambitions; Dou Yi later remains a close aide through Yuanping’s decline. (Chapters 298–299, 336, 354)
- Li Ximing: Yuanping’s son, whose safety Dou Yi sees as important to the Dou Family’s future. (Chapter 354)
- Li Xicheng and Li Chengliao: Later Li-family superiors for whom Dou Yi keeps accounts, reports developments, and carries out discreet errands. (Chapters 500, 631)
Items
No personal artifact is singled out for Dou Yi. Letters, reports, and household messages pass through his hands as part of his service. (Chapters 336, 426, 631)
