Chen Yin
Chen Yin, known as Daoist Master Yushui, is the Purple Mansion ancestor of the Chen Family of Yuyang Prefecture. His water divine ability and costly spirit sword sustain repeated efforts to defend the southern alliance, while his household’s limited protection makes him a favored target of stronger opponents. (Chapters 1343–1353, 1531)
Biography
Costly solidarity and an uncertain political future
Yushui’s relations with the Lis begin through shared interests rather than unconditional friendship: he sends Xuanyu to help against Wang Fu, bringing the households closer through hostility to Changxiao Gate. He later joins Kuiqi and Ximing across the river despite disputes on the southern border that could have justified staying home. Against Daisi, his sword and Mansion Water force the Maha to respond, but the enemy bowl contains his water and turns the duel against him. Yushui suffers serious injury and gratefully accepts a healing pill from Ximing. Even while eager to return and protect his own exposed household, he fulfills his obligation to explain the southern Daoist Master Luo’s contribution and requested inheritance. (Chapters 1343–1353)
Yushui again supports the northern campaign and then develops a practical exchange with Zhouwei, trading No-Fault Spirit Wood for materials. In the fighting at the Turbid Slaughter Mausoleum, his newly forged spirit sword attracts enemies who recognize both its value and his relative lack of trump cards. Xindu pursues him while Merciful Ones surround him and Daisi’s bowl obstructs escape. Yushui commits his full strength rather than abandon the weapon that consumed much of his lifetime’s resources. When Zhouwei intervenes, he briefly has another chance to flee, yet turns his sword to defend the younger man’s flank instead. This reciprocated assistance strengthens their relationship beyond the original calculation of shared enemies. (Chapters 1428, 1527–1529, 1531–1532)
His sword remains relevant in the later grotto-heaven competition, where its strength makes his intervention valuable even though hostile lightning drives him back. Political change then brings a different vulnerability: the emergence of Water–Fire power at Simin deprives him of the Supreme Yang support on which his household has depended. Yushui visits Ximing in visible unease, explains the old Yue State’s collapse and the Chen family’s historical setting, and asks the Lis to share information about the continuing upheaval. Experience and personal allies remain important, but cannot remove the insecurity produced by larger shifts in patronage and court power. (Chapters 1574, 1635–1636)
Appearance and personality
Yushui is an older cultivator who mixes courtesy with political awareness. He is friendly to peers, understands the motives of questionable allies, and worries visibly about threats to his household. His decision to protect Zhouwei during his own attempted escape shows that gratitude can affect his actions even under immediate danger. (Chapters 1343–1344, 1353, 1531, 1635)
Abilities and cultivation
Mansion Water and sword cultivation
His divine ability manifests white waters that descend as rain, surge in tides, and form a firm defensive enclosure. Against Xindu’s allies, he also unleashes Inferior Water with a downward pulling force that strips away spirit-wind abilities and drags opponents down. These effects remain vulnerable to specialized counters: Daisi’s Kongsijiang Demon Bowl receives and contains Mansion Water, giving the Maha an advantage despite Yushui’s sharp blade. (Chapters 1344, 1350, 1528, 1531)
Yushui combines Sword Essence with a spirit sword forged from resources accumulated over most of his life. In desperate defense, eight great sword radiances shield him and dissolve incoming attacks. The weapon lets him hold against enemies beyond his cultivation, but cannot prevent injury under combined pursuit; its enormous value also gives those enemies another reason to target him. A later blast of divine lightning penetrates his defense and drives him back in pain. (Chapters 1531, 1574)
Relationships
- Chen Xuanyu: Valued junior whom he sends to assist against Wang Fu.
- Li Ximing: Ally who gives him a badly needed healing pill and later receives his political concerns.
- Li Zhouwei: Rescues him in battle; Yushui responds by protecting Zhouwei’s flank.
- Kuiqi: Fellow participant in the northern intervention.
- Daisi: Buddhist opponent whose bowl counters his water. (Chapters 1343–1353, 1531, 1635)
Items
His spirit sword consumes much of his personal fortune and ancestral resources. He cuts a portion of No-Fault Spirit Wood for its hilt and trades the remainder for Under-Neck Feathers. The Radiant Sky Stone comes into Li possession through the earlier Wang Fu operation assisted by Xuanyu; it is not Yushui’s personal weapon. (Chapters 1343, 1527, 1531)
