Barry
Barry Trashen is Aquaphina's chosen Hero in Eridani and an uneasy student and moral foil to Kai LuForia. Barry begins as a merciful believer who kills demons without hesitation but insists that mortal criminals deserve trial and repentance. Kai's coercive training, Aquaphina's rejection of that mercy, and repeated defeat force Barry to reconsider what heroism requires, yet his increased power never makes him capable of defeating Eridani's Demon King alone.
Biography
An underprepared chosen Hero
Barry first appears defending a village with Iris and Patty, killing demons cleanly while sending cooperating pirates to prison rather than executing them. He understands heroism as service to Aquaphina: demons are enemies to be destroyed, but other people are children of the gods who can repent. Aquaphina considers this distinction naïve and summons him to announce Kai's arrival, hoping the foreign Hero who has already killed a Demon King can compensate for Barry's inadequate preparation. (Chapters 260–261)
The need for help becomes immediate when a stronger demon overwhelms Barry despite his divine sword. Kai kills it effortlessly and discovers that Barry received only basic training before being deployed, with roughly 35,000 mana—stronger than an ordinary Tier-10 fighter but insufficient against the enemy he is expected to face. Barry admires Kai's strength and anti-demon ruthlessness, while Kai sees a failed institutional project. Their alliance therefore begins with incompatible expectations: Barry wants a heroic model, whereas Kai intends to rebuild his confidence and ethics by force. (Chapters 263–265)
Mercy under coercive training
Kai makes Barry confront pirates and other mortal offenders specifically to attack his absolute no-kill rule. Barry repeatedly defeats them, protects villages, and erects barriers against demonic water, but still insists on arrest and trial. Kai escalates by creating an illusion in which he kills Iris, using Barry's grief to argue that victims may reasonably demand an offender's death. Barry recognizes the manipulation and remains shaken rather than persuaded, revealing that his mercy is a serious moral conviction, not merely fear of combat. (Chapters 266–268)
The power training is itself morally compromised. Kai hypnotizes Barry, Iris, and Patty into accepting a scheme in which Kai empowers the women and they transfer the resulting hero energy to Barry. Barry does not know that his consent and theirs have been altered, and his enthusiasm for permanent growth is therefore manufactured within a violation he cannot evaluate. The first transfer raises his measured mana to 50,000 and makes fighting lesser demons easier, but the new strength does not resolve the ethical disagreement or place him near Kai's level. (Chapters 269–274)
Spirit-world campaign and rejection of Kai
Barry carries his enhanced water and divine techniques into the spirit world, helping recover the southern Spirit Orb and attacking a demon stronghold with divine rain, icicles, and a hurricane. He fights confidently against lesser enemies and kills a demon knight before it can use the orb. Against Demon Lord Carleen, however, he is impaled and knocked unconscious even after a surge of morale. Kai must finish the battle, demonstrating that transferred power and heroic conviction have improved Barry's reach without closing the gap against the campaign's highest threats. (Chapters 278–293)
His disagreement with Kai finally becomes open rupture after Kai deliberately provokes a pirate fleet despite the risk to civilians. Barry argues that great power creates an obligation to protect strangers; Kai answers that he protects only those he values and returns Gracia's Hero power rather than accept the office's ethics. Barry attacks him for disgracing the title, but Kai's companions block the attempt and Iris and Patty reveal that some criminals Barry spared later attacked villages again. Barry lowers his sword, isolated between loyalty to his ideal and evidence that mercy has produced new victims. (Chapters 300–301)
Aquaphina's ultimatum and the failed Demon King battle
At the captured pirate base, Barry again refuses to kill marked pirates even as his allies execute them. Kai summons Aquaphina, who confirms that she hates Barry's softness and will replace him if he does not change. Barry then kills a mortal pirate for the first time, not because his own ethical reasoning reaches a settled conclusion, but because divine approval and fear of losing his identity as Hero overwhelm his resistance. Aquaphina immediately empowers him, linking his new strength to compliance while leaving him visibly traumatized by the act. (Chapters 319–322)
The empowerment raises Barry to about 250,000 mana and later permits flight, encouraging him to believe he can defeat the Demon King unaided. His meeting with Lygma complicates that certainty when the Demon King claims he wanted peace and that subordinates acted without permission. Kai's interference turns the meeting into combat, and Lygma tears Barry apart despite his enhanced swordsmanship. Kai heals him and kills Lygma, while Aquaphina assigns Barry the less glamorous continuing task of eliminating demon pills and their network. By Kai's later return, reports credit Barry with handling Eridani's remaining demon sightings, showing continued service after the failed climax. (Chapters 321–329, 485)
Appearance and personality
Barry is a young human man treated as a “boy” or Hero-in-training by stronger figures. The corpus does not state his hair color, eye color, skin tone, height, or regular clothing. His eyes and body glow blue when he answers Aquaphina's call or receives hero energy, and he carries his divine weapon at his hip. During Kai's training arrangement, sleep deprivation leaves temporary dark circles, a hunched posture, and a dragging gait. (Chapters 260–261, 273, 326)
He is earnest, devout, compassionate, insecure, and competitive. Barry wants to help every community, prays daily, and initially believes violent criminals can return to Aquaphina's path. He is courageous against demons but frightened by superior enemies, while Kai's victories turn admiration into jealousy. His first mortal killing shows dependence on divine validation: Aquaphina's approval overturns a principle he defended through repeated conflict. (Chapters 260–267, 301, 319–322, 327)
Powers and abilities
Hero blessing and divine energy
Aquaphina's blessing makes Barry her chosen mortal Hero and supplies holy energy specialized against demons. He can answer her summons by glowing blue, sense supernatural threats through “hero senses,” channel her power alongside his own, and damage demons whose defenses resist ordinary attacks. Appointment as Hero is not the same as holding an Adventurer or mercenary license: the corpus confirms no Adventurer rank or Gold III status for Barry. His office also remains revocable because Aquaphina explicitly threatens to replace him. (Chapters 260–264, 273, 276, 321–322)
Water combat and sword forms
Barry fights primarily through flowing movement, water magic, and the Aquaphina's Hero Sword. The weapon shifts among sword, shield, and spear forms. Named techniques include Slithering Wave and Blade of the Water Goddess, while Goddess Form 3: Hurricane Strike combines wind, water, divine energy, and an icicle storm over a broad area. He can glide above uneven ground on water, redirect black lightning through his blade, create barriers of holy power, and later fly. These abilities are most effective against demons and remain unable to overcome elite demon lords or Lygma. (Chapters 263, 266, 268–269, 276, 286, 327)
Endurance and limitations
Barry survives severe wounds, including dismemberment, impalement, and a Demon King's large-scale bombardment, but often survives because Patty or Kai heals him. Demonic energy interferes with ordinary healing, and higher enemies repeatedly bypass his defenses before he can respond. He also has an important psychological limit: he initially freezes or destabilizes when forced to kill non-demons, while his faith makes him slow to question Aquaphina's methods. Greater mana improves speed, power, and flight but does not automatically supply tactical judgment or resistance to Kai's hypnosis and illusions. (Chapters 263, 267–269, 292–293, 307, 321–327)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chosen Hero of Aquaphina | By 260 | Enters the supplied scope already blessed as Eridani's Hero, with divine anti-demon access and approximately 35,000 mana; no Adventurer or Gold rank is confirmed. |
| Transferred hero energy | 273 | Iris and Patty permanently transfer Kai-derived hero energy into Barry. The text inconsistently describes his earlier value as 30,000 rather than 35,000, but explicitly confirms a new 50,000 endpoint. |
| Direct empowerment from Aquaphina | 322 | After his first mortal killing, Aquaphina grants a persistent surge from about 75,000 to 250,000 mana. Later use confirms flight, but Lygma still overwhelms him. |
Relationships
- Kai LuForia: Kai saves, trains, empowers, humiliates, and repeatedly manipulates Barry. Barry admires his strength but rejects his indifference toward strangers; their argument causes Kai to surrender Gracia's Hero title. Kai nevertheless saves Barry from higher enemies and finishes the Demon King battle he cannot win. (Chapters 263–329)
- Aquaphina: Aquaphina appoints Barry and remains the center of his faith. She views his mercy as weakness, threatens replacement, and rewards his first mortal killing with power. Barry's service continues after Lygma's defeat, but the relationship is founded on hierarchy and conditional approval rather than mutual moral trust. (Chapters 260–261, 319–329)
- Iris and Patty: Barry's companions fight, heal, and travel beside him. They support his growth but eventually reject his universal mercy and align more closely with Kai's lethal methods. Kai also uses them as the intermediaries for Barry's hero-energy transfers without Barry understanding the hypnosis behind the arrangement. (Chapters 260–274, 292–329)
- Cornelia: Cornelia joins the group during the sea journey and later becomes captain of the reformed pirate organization. Barry works beside her during the campaign, though Kai's seizure and restructuring of the pirate base reflects a form of unilateral power Barry distrusts. (Chapters 273–329)
Items
- Aquaphina's Hero Sword: Aquaphina's divine weapon is Barry's principal armament. It can become a sword, shield, or spear and channels his water and holy techniques, allowing him to harm demons that resist ordinary weapons. Its effectiveness still depends on Barry's power; stronger demon lords can break through its defense or overpower its attacks. (Chapters 263, 268–269, 276, 286–293, 327)
