Wei WuXian

Wei WuXian is a former YunmengJiang disciple whose innovations in talismans, resentful energy, and corpse control make him both a decisive wartime cultivator and a feared outcast. Thirteen years after his death, Mo XuanYu's sacrificial ritual summons him into a new body, and his attempt to conceal his identity draws him into the mystery of a dismembered corpse. (Chapters 1–3)

Biography

Lotus Pier and the Cloud Recesses

After the deaths of Wei ChangZe and CangSe SanRen, Jiang FengMian brings their son to Lotus Pier. Wei WuXian grows up as the YunmengJiang Sect's first disciple beside Jiang Cheng and Jiang YanLi. Jiang FengMian treats him warmly, Yu ZiYuan warns that his impulsiveness will bring trouble, and Jiang Cheng is both his closest companion and the heir against whom others compare him. (Chapters 51, 56, and 71)

At fifteen, Wei WuXian attends lectures in the Cloud Recesses, where he smuggles in liquor, distracts other students, and provokes Lan WangJi. In class he argues that resentful energy might be redirected rather than only liberated, suppressed, or eliminated. Lan QiRen condemns the proposal, but it anticipates the path Wei WuXian later takes. (Chapters 13–18)

The Xuanwu and the fall of Lotus Pier

During the QishanWen Sect's forced indoctrination, Wei WuXian intervenes when Wang LingJiao tries to brand Luo QingYang. Trapped in the Xuanwu cave with the injured Lan WangJi, he enters the beast's shell and drives it into Lan WangJi's guqin-string trap. He recovers the resentful iron sword inside and, while feverish, hears the melody that will later reveal his reborn identity. (Chapters 51–55)

The Wen attack destroys Lotus Pier, kills Jiang FengMian and Yu ZiYuan, and leaves Jiang Cheng without a golden core. Wei WuXian persuades Wen Qing to attempt an untested transfer, deceiving Jiang Cheng with a story about BaoShan SanRen and surrendering his own core while conscious. Wen Chao soon throws the weakened Wei WuXian into Burial Mound, where he survives by finding another way to use the resentful dead. (Chapters 58–60, 87–89)

Return from Burial Mound

Wei WuXian returns during the Sunshot Campaign wielding a flute and altered talismans rather than Suibian. He uses fierce corpses against the Wen forces and helps Jiang Cheng take revenge on Wen Chao, but will not explain his missing sword cultivation. The core secret makes his refusals appear arrogant. His power helps defeat QishanWen, yet the Stygian Tiger Seal and his independence make the victors fear what they cannot control. (Chapters 61–63, 69–72)

The Wen settlement and collapse

When Wen Qing asks him to find her missing brother, Wei WuXian discovers Wen Ning dead and the surviving Wen civilians abused at Qiongqi Path. He restores Wen Ning as a conscious fierce corpse and shelters roughly fifty survivors at Burial Mound. To protect the rebuilt YunmengJiang Sect from the consequences, he and Jiang Cheng stage a public break. The refugees farm and care for Wen Yuan while the cultivation world treats their settlement as rebellion. (Chapters 73–75)

At the Qiongqi Path ambush, Wei WuXian loses control of Wen Ning, who kills Jin ZiXuan. Wen Qing and Wen Ning surrender, but the campaign against Burial Mound continues. At Nightless City, Jiang YanLi dies amid the fighting; overwhelmed, Wei WuXian joins the Tiger Seal and unleashes a massacre. Lan WangJi carries him away, though Wei WuXian remembers almost nothing of the rescue. Wei WuXian later destroys one half of the Seal and dies during the ensuing siege of Burial Mound, but no body remains and the novel preserves competing accounts of exactly how he died. Rebirth and the severed-body trail

Thirteen years later, Mo XuanYu's sacrificial ritual summons Wei WuXian into a new body and binds him to fulfill Mo XuanYu's revenge. Concealing his identity, he protects GusuLan juniors at Mo Village and Dafan Mountain, summons Wen Ning to save Jin Ling, and plays the melody from the Xuanwu cave. Lan WangJi recognizes it and takes him to the Cloud Recesses. (Chapters 2–12, 113)

The resentful left arm found at Mo Village leads them through the Nie stone castles, Yi City, and Koi Tower. Lan WangJi's Inquiry, Wei WuXian's Empathy, paper avatars, and their deductions expose Xue Yang's deception, identify the remains as Nie MingJue's, and locate his head in Jin GuangYao's secret chamber. When Jin Ling stabs Wei WuXian after his identity is exposed, Lan WangJi shelters him and accepts his evidence. (Chapters 20–50, 63–65)

Second siege and a life beyond the crisis

At the second siege of Burial Mound, Wei WuXian identifies the altered music that drained the cultivators' spiritual power and helps defend the Demon-Slaughtering Cave. At Lotus Pier, Wen Ning reveals that Jiang Cheng's core is Wei WuXian's. A later account supplies what Wei WuXian never learns: Jiang Cheng lost his original core after deliberately drawing Wen pursuers away from him. (Chapters 79–89, 110)

At Guanyin Temple, the pair confront Jin GuangYao's crimes and help seal him with Nie MingJue's fierce corpse. Wei WuXian learns what Lan WangJi sacrificed after Nightless City and states his own feelings plainly. He then learns that Lan SiZhui is the Wen Yuan whom Lan WangJi rescued. Rather than return to sect politics, Wei WuXian chooses to travel and night-hunt with Lan WangJi. (Chapters 98–113)

Appearance and personality

In his first life, Wei WuXian is described as a handsome young man who usually wears black after adopting demonic cultivation; Chenqing's red tassel becomes part of his recognized silhouette. In Mo XuanYu's body, he initially sees an unfamiliar face covered in poorly applied red powder. Across both lives he is quick-witted, playful, and comfortable provoking people, but he repeatedly risks himself for others and is reluctant to publicize his sacrifices. (Chapters 2–3, 69, 113)

Abilities and cultivation

Wei WuXian combines a conventional YunmengJiang education with an unusually experimental approach to spiritual energy. Before losing his golden core, he is an outstanding swordsman and archer; afterward, he builds an alternative system around resentful energy, sound, talismans, and the dead. His greatest strength is not raw power alone but the ability to understand an existing technique, reverse its assumptions, and improvise a new application under pressure.

Golden core, swordsmanship, and archery

As Lotus Pier's head disciple, Wei WuXian learns sword flight, spiritual sword combat, talisman use, archery, and the orthodox methods expected of a major clan's most promising student. Suibian answers him readily, and at the Qishan discussion conference he demonstrates enough precision to rank among the strongest young archers. His playful behavior often hides disciplined fundamentals: he can fight Lan WangJi evenly enough to keep the latter's attention, shoot accurately in competitive and wartime conditions, and reason quickly about arrays and monsters. (Chapters 15–17 and 51)

That foundation is permanently altered when he gives his golden core to Jiang Cheng. Wen Qing removes the core while Wei WuXian remains conscious, leaving him unable to sustain his former sword cultivation or draw Suibian normally. He conceals the sacrifice, so his later refusal to carry his sword looks like arrogance rather than physical incapacity. In Mo XuanYu's body he again possesses some spiritual power, but the body's weak core limits orthodox techniques and makes careful improvisation more useful than prolonged contests of cultivation. (Chapters 60, 89, and 101–103)

Resentful-energy cultivation and corpse command

Wei WuXian's demonic cultivation redirects the resentment of corpses and spirits instead of trying only to suppress or liberate it. He first proposes the underlying idea during Lan QiRen's lectures, then turns it into a survival method after Wen Chao casts him into Burial Mound without a golden core. Whistling and flute music provide patterns through which he can attract, calm, provoke, or direct the dead; Chenqing later becomes his principal instrument, but the method is his rather than the flute's independent power. (Chapters 14, 61–63, and 71)

The technique can transform a battlefield. Wei WuXian raises fierce corpses against Wen troops, reverses talismans so that they draw rather than repel evil, and awakens Wen Ning as an unusually powerful conscious corpse. Its scale also creates its central danger: resentment remains violent, other cultivators fear a force they cannot regulate, and a disruption at Qiongqi Path contributes to Wen Ning killing Jin ZiXuan despite Wei WuXian's attempt to stop him. The source later establishes outside manipulation around several disasters, but it never makes corpse command harmless or removes Wei WuXian's own fear of losing control. (Chapters 61–63, 76–78, and 104–106)

Talismans, arrays, and invention

Wei WuXian treats cultivation tools as systems that can be rewritten. By adding or reversing strokes, he changes a talisman's direction or purpose; the Spirit-Attraction Flag applies that principle by gathering nearby dark creatures and resentful energy onto a marked target. He also recognizes array structures, repairs or repurposes seals, makes paper effigies, and uses improvised blood markings when conventional materials are unavailable. These inventions are powerful because other cultivators can reproduce them, but that also allows sects to adopt the useful results while condemning their creator. (Chapters 4–5, 61, 80–82, and 100)

His practical intelligence is especially visible during investigations. He tests hypotheses through controlled risks, notices when corpses or spiritual weapons react to hidden resentment, and combines physical evidence with ritual knowledge. He can make a small paper avatar enter guarded spaces, animate paper figures as distractions, and use spirit-attracting methods to expose a concealed target. Such techniques depend on preparation and interpretation rather than overwhelming cultivation, which is why they remain effective in Mo XuanYu's weaker body. (Chapters 35–43 and 98–101)

Empathy and spirit communication

Empathy allows Wei WuXian to admit a dead person's consciousness into himself and experience the memories carrying its strongest emotions. The method produces evidence unavailable through ordinary questioning: through A-Qing he witnesses years of life in Yi City and reconstructs Xue Yang's deception of Xiao XingChen. It is not passive viewing. The host feels the spirit's fear, pain, confusion, and fixation, and companions must guard the body while the consciousness is immersed. A powerful or unstable memory can therefore overwhelm the user or leave the physical body exposed. (Chapters 38–42)

He also understands Inquiry and other forms of communication with spirits well enough to interpret or supplement Lan techniques. These methods remain constrained by what the dead know and are willing or able to communicate. Empathy reveals A-Qing's perspective, not an omniscient account, so Wei WuXian still has to compare memory, physical evidence, and living testimony before reaching a conclusion.
