Jiang Cheng

Jiang Cheng is the leader who rebuilds the YunmengJiang Sect after the fall of Lotus Pier. His history with Wei WuXian binds family loyalty, rivalry, grief, and unresolved obligation together.

Biography

Heir of Lotus Pier

Jiang Cheng grew up beside Wei WuXian and his elder sister Jiang YanLi, but as the YunmengJiang heir he was held to a different standard. Yu ZiYuan criticized his progress and compared his father's treatment of him with his treatment of Wei WuXian. At the Cloud Recesses, Jiang Cheng tried to contain Wei WuXian's rule-breaking and joined the Caiyi Town water-ghoul hunt. The two nevertheless imagined a future as Yunmeng's “Two Prides,” with Jiang Cheng leading and Wei WuXian supporting him. (Chapters 13–18, 51, and 102)

Fall of Lotus Pier and a hidden exchange

When the QishanWen forces attacked Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng tried to return to the fighting before his mother bound him and Wei WuXian with Zidian and sent them away. While they fled, he saw Wen cultivators approaching Wei WuXian in a market and deliberately drew them toward himself. Captured and taken back to Lotus Pier, he was beaten and had his golden core destroyed by Wen ZhuLiu. He never revealed why he had been caught. (Chapters 58–60 and 110)

Wen Ning rescued Jiang Cheng, and Wei WuXian later led him to what Jiang Cheng believed was BaoShan SanRen's mountain. He awoke believing the immortal had restored his core. In reality, Wen Qing had transplanted Wei WuXian's core into him while Wen Ning assisted. (Chapters 59–62 and 89)

Sunshot Campaign and sect leadership

Jiang Cheng joined Wei WuXian in killing Wen Chao and Wen ZhuLiu, then fought through the Sunshot Campaign. He reclaimed Yunmeng territory, rebuilt the devastated Jiang Sect, and assumed leadership while still young. Wei WuXian's corpse cultivation aided their victories but also drew suspicion toward the recovering sect, fracturing their former equality. (Chapters 61–69)

The Wen remnants and broken promises

When Wei WuXian freed Wen Ning and the other detainees, Jiang Cheng followed him to Burial Mound but could not protect them without endangering YunmengJiang. Their public duel was meant to separate the sect from Wei WuXian's actions, yet the estrangement became real. Qiongqi Path brought Jin ZiXuan's death; Nightless City then took Jiang YanLi, and Jiang Cheng later helped lead the first siege of Burial Mound. The promise of the Two Prides collapsed under grief and obligations neither man explained fully. (Chapters 68 and 72–78)

Jin Ling and Wei WuXian's return

Jiang Cheng helped raise the orphaned Jin Ling, pressing him to excel while secretly placing disciples nearby to protect his first major night-hunt. At Dafan Mountain, Wen Ning's return and Mo XuanYu's flute made him suspect Wei WuXian had returned, though Zidian could not expel the soul from the voluntarily offered body. He repeatedly chose Jin Ling's safety even while scolding him for weakness. (Chapters 7–10 and 24–25)

Golden-core truth and the words left unsaid

At Lotus Pier, Wen Ning made Jiang Cheng unsheathe Suibian and revealed whose core he carried. At Guanyin Temple, the foster brothers confronted their broken promises: Jiang Cheng accused Wei WuXian of abandoning the sect, then wept over a sacrifice he had never understood; Wei WuXian apologized but asked that the core belong to the past. Jiang Cheng returned Chenqing and helped contain Nie MingJue, yet withheld his own truth—that his capture began with saving Wei WuXian. They left without forcing their mirrored debts into reconciliation. (Chapters 89 and 101–110)

Appearance and personality

Jiang Cheng and Jin Ling share sharp, handsome features. He is proud, competitive, quick-tempered, and often severe in speech, but he repeatedly puts himself between Jin Ling and danger. As a sect leader, he can restrain an immediate impulse when open conflict would disadvantage his clan. (Chapters 7–10, 102, and 107)

Abilities and cultivation

Jiang Cheng is a major-sect cultivator trained in the YunmengJiang sword tradition and the wielder of the Yu family's Zidian. His fighting style is direct and forceful, but his cultivation also carries the central concealed fact of his life: the golden core he believes BaoShan SanRen restored was transferred from Wei WuXian.

Golden core and sword cultivation

Jiang Cheng trains from childhood to inherit Lotus Pier, learning sword combat, sword flight, archery, spiritual-energy control, and the responsibilities of sect command. Sandu is his principal sword. He can direct it in aerial combat, cut through supernatural threats, and use it while coordinating disciples rather than fighting only as an individual. His accomplishments after the Sunshot Campaign show that he rebuilds enough institutional and personal strength to make YunmengJiang a major power again. (Chapters 8, 17, 59, and 73)

Wen ZhuLiu melts Jiang Cheng's original golden core after the fall of Lotus Pier, apparently ending his cultivation. Wei WuXian and Wen Qing secretly reverse that outcome by transplanting Wei WuXian's core into him. The operation gives Jiang Cheng a functioning core but not knowledge of its origin; because spiritual swords recognize the core's energy, Suibian later unsheathes for him and exposes the truth. His power is therefore genuinely his to cultivate and command, yet its foundation embodies the sacrifice and secrecy that divided him from Wei WuXian. (Chapters 60, 89, and 101–103)

Zidian

Zidian normally rests as a ring and expands into a whip carrying purple spiritual lightning. It can bind, strike, disarm, and punish at range, allowing Jiang Cheng to control space while Sandu handles close sword combat. As a Yu family heirloom, it recognizes masters: Yu ZiYuan transfers it to Jiang Cheng before her death, and Jiang FengMian can also command it in the final defense of Lotus Pier. (Chapters 57–58)

Its most distinctive function is separating a possessing soul from a stolen body. Jiang Cheng uses that property during his long search for signs of Wei WuXian's return, striking suspected demonic cultivators and eventually Mo XuanYu's body. The technique is reliable against ordinary possession but fails to expose Wei WuXian because Mo XuanYu used a sacrificial summoning that gave the body willingly. Zidian's failure is therefore evidence about the ritual's mechanics, not proof that Jiang Cheng lacks control. (Chapters 7–10)

Leadership and interrogation

Jiang Cheng's capabilities extend beyond combat. He rebuilds a devastated sect, trains disciples, manages Lotus Pier, and protects Jin Ling's inheritance across both Jiang and Jin family politics. His command style relies on intimidation, strict standards, and rapid punishment; it produces obedience but often closes off honest explanation. That same pattern shapes his investigations, where he uses Zidian and threats to test suspects rather than Wei WuXian's experimental reasoning. (Chapters 7–10, 73, and 100–103)

This severity has practical limits. Anger can make him pursue the person he blames instead of the larger threat, and his emotional investment in Wei WuXian makes him vulnerable to provocation. At Guanyin Temple and Lotus Pier, however, he still reacts quickly enough to protect Jin Ling and confront armed opponents while absorbing revelations that overturn his understanding of the past.
