Emma's Short Swords

Emma's Short Swords are the paired close-range weapons used by Emma Roshfield from Lock Academy through the Pillar of Greed.

History

Hollberg and renewed training

Emma first draws the short swords while fighting multiple black-clad attackers at Hollberg, storing them in dimensional space when she must move Jin Horton and drawing them again for the coordinated last assault. Feeling that she contributed too little compared with Kevin, she later tightens her grip and resumes intensive paired practice. Her movements become a flowing sequence in which each step and alternating blade cut the surrounding air, establishing the weapons as the focus of her response to perceived weakness. Close-range interception

In later crises Emma uses the pair for forceful two-handed slashes, channels mana into an individual blade, and appears at an enemy's flank or weapon arm to interrupt attacks on allies. During the Cassaria compressor battle, she repeatedly targets the hand holding Kevin Voss and helps deny a powerful demon the time needed to stop the group's plan. She then hacks at the white core with both swords, though ordinary strikes cannot immediately resolve it. (Chapters 302, 389, 418, 585–600)

Pillar of Greed

Emma continues training with the blades as a way to manage grief and emotional emptiness, making their paired rhythm both combat discipline and personal coping mechanism. Inside the Pillar of Greed, she marks her route with one sword, crosses both over an ambushing demon's head, and brings an edge beside its core to threaten an instant kill. Against a projection or intangible figure, however, the blades pass through without effect, demonstrating that physical accuracy cannot solve a nonphysical deception. Properties and functions

Paired mobility style

The short blades favor rapid alternating cuts, crossed guards and attacks from two directions. Their limited length suits Emma's agile, dance-like footwork and lets her redirect either hand independently around an opponent. They are stored in dimensional space or worn at her hips depending on the scene; the corpus does not identify an independent summoning enchantment. (Chapters 66–69, 148, 389, 754, and 805)

Mana channel and precision

Emma can coat both blades in a strong yellow hue or route a larger share of mana into one sword for a concentrated strike. Their compact edges let her aim at limbs, necks and demon cores while fighting close to allies. The power comes from Emma's mana and technique: no autonomous spell, elemental reservoir or intelligence is attributed to the swords. (Chapters 69, 389, 418, 585, and 829)

Defensive and material limits

Crossing the pair provides a two-point guard against claws or heavy attacks, but stronger enemies can overpower the block. Their short reach requires Emma to enter danger, and purely physical cuts cannot injure an intangible projection. The white core on Cassaria also withstands repeated hacking, showing that sharpness alone is insufficient against certain supernatural materials. (Chapters 585–600, 829–830, and 851)

Owners and users

• Emma Roshfield: Sole established owner and wielder. She stores, trains with and repeatedly deploys the matched blades as personal equipment. (Chapters 66–830)
