Vermillion Bird

The Vermillion Bird is the guardian beast of Vermillion Bird City and, after the Golden Crow and Phoenix disappear, the Forgotten Continent’s reigning fire sovereign. Its final choice trades its own life for the preservation of stronger fire lineages: it revives Xi Ling and entrusts its Origin Flames to Xiao Qi. (Chapters 56, 162–163, 297–305, and 357–374)

Biography

Isrock, the New World, and the Lunar Scourge

The Vermillion Bird is introduced through the hierarchy of sacred beasts as the southern guardian created under the Holy Qilin’s authority. Early uncertainty over Xi Ling’s identity makes the guardian relevant before it appears directly: Xi Ling resembles a Vermillion Bird or phoenix more than the three-footed Golden Crow of legend. That resemblance foreshadows a genuine connection, but it does not make the two the same being; the later meeting establishes Xi Ling as a distinct descendant carrying Golden Crow and Phoenix blood. Heart’s Dream and the First Guild

After Xi Ling burns away her own life force to protect Ling Chen, Qi Yue identifies Flames of Life from either the vanished Golden Crow or the Vermillion Bird as the only known means of reigniting her rootless flame. Because the Golden Crow is believed gone, Ling sets out to find the southern guardian despite learning the essential cost: the Vermillion Bird would have to spend its own Origin Flames and die. The guardian is therefore placed under a conflict between responsibility to its city and preservation of a unique fire lineage before either party meets. (Chapters 162–177)

The Road South and the Fairy Realm

When Ling finally reaches Lava Purgatory, the Vermillion Bird answers because it senses Xiao Hui’s resemblance to the Holy Qilin. It initially refuses to interfere with human affairs, then examines Xi Ling and recognizes the Golden Crow and Phoenix blood within her. The Vermillion Bird agrees to sacrifice itself only if Ling releases Xi Ling’s binding life contract, promises to conceal the guardian’s death and protect Vermillion Bird City, and finds a human Flame Soul to inherit the Vermillion Bird lineage. It privately resolves to save Xi Ling even if no successor is found, showing that preservation of the greater fire heritage ultimately outweighs its own survival. (Chapters 271–305)

Calamity in the East Ocean Continent

The Vermillion Bird does not participate directly in Ling’s East Ocean campaign, but its promise changes the emotional stakes surrounding Xiao Qi. The guardian identifies her supposed Heavenly Sun Arteries as an uncontrolled Flame Soul and offers an inheritance capable of transforming the fatal condition into mastery and an extended life. Xiao Qi initially hesitates because the process requires remaining in Mystic Moon for months without returning to Earth, then later chooses the risk after Ling’s personal catastrophe leaves her determined to gain power that can help him. (Chapters 303–305, 357–361, and 492)

The Defense and Founding of Ling Tian City

Xiao Qi completes the inheritance faster than even the Vermillion Bird expected and returns as its Daughter, bringing inherited sight, wings, armor, and flames into the unfinished city’s defense. These feats preserve the guardian’s purpose after death: its power allows Xiao Qi to see distant battle lines, annihilate ordinary players, and fly above the siege. The capabilities belong to Xiao Qi rather than to a surviving Vermillion Bird, and their human wielder still has to spend energy, choose targets, and endure the surrounding battlefield. (Chapters 560–569 and 581–591)

The Underworld and the Forgotten City

The Vermillion Bird’s legacy develops along two separate lines. Xi Ling combines its fire with Golden Crow and Phoenix flames, gaining authority broad enough to identify unusual Underworld Fire and protect Ling and his companions from ordinary flame. Xiao Qi uses inherited flames with moderate destruction effects against armored enemies. These applications demonstrate successful transmission, but not the guardian’s continued agency: neither inheritor is merely the Vermillion Bird reborn, and each combines the inheritance with a distinct body, soul, and prior power. The Moon God Palace and the Shura’s Return

During the mass return of demon beasts, Xiao Qi’s Vermillion Bird flames form a sustained defensive ring around Ling Tian City’s Administrative District and naturally counter demonic creatures. Elsewhere, the actual Vermillion Bird can no longer answer the threat to its city; Moon God forces must be redirected there when ancient demons overwhelm human defenses. The contrast completes the consequence of its sacrifice: its lineage survives as mobile power in one inheritor, but Vermillion Bird City has lost the resident guardian that once anchored its protection. The Godchild Crisis and Qi Xing

When Earth’s destruction produces shocks across Mystic Moon, Vermillion Bird City and the rest of the Forgotten Continent experience violent ground movement and structural collapse. The Vermillion Bird does not reappear to intervene, consistent with its established death and the transfer of its power. Its final condition therefore remains relevant: the city’s long-term safety depends on Ling honoring his promise and on the surviving inheritors rather than on restoration of the original guardian. (Chapter 816)

Appearance and personality

The Vermillion Bird appears as an immense crimson avian phantasm with the head and tail of a phoenix, eagle-like claws, a snake-like neck, and feathers burning with intense fire. Its voice and gaze carry the majesty of a guardian beast even when only its projected consciousness is present. The corpus does not provide a separate detailed view of its physical body within Lava Purgatory. (Chapters 297–305 and 361)

It is stern, responsible, and unwilling to abandon its city impulsively, yet it values the continuity of fire lineages above personal survival. It tests Ling’s motives before trusting him, insists on freedom for Xi Ling, plans for a successor, and warns Xiao Qi plainly about the pain and confinement of inheritance. Its compassion is therefore structured by duty and informed consent rather than sentiment alone. (Chapters 297–305 and 357–361)

Abilities and powers

The Vermillion Bird is a sacred fire beast whose Origin Flames sustain its life and can be transferred only at fatal cost. Its later legacy divides between Xi Ling and Xiao Qi; effects demonstrated by those inheritors should not be treated as actions performed by the deceased guardian.

Vermillion Bird flames and Flames of Life

Its flames rank below the Golden Crow and Phoenix flames but above ordinary fire, and they can release the Flames of Life needed to reignite Xi Ling’s nearly extinguished rootless flame. The same Origin Flames carry power and control memories into a compatible successor. This transfer consumes the Vermillion Bird’s life, cannot be repeated after its death, and requires prolonged inheritance rather than an instant gift; an unsuitable or failing inheritor risks having their consciousness consumed. (Chapters 162–163 and 297–305)

Guardian authority and Holy Qilin bond

The Holy Qilin created and leads the four regional guardian beasts, and its power cannot harm either the Qilin or beings under its protection. This bond lets the Vermillion Bird recognize a Qilin-like aura around Xiao Hui and project its consciousness to Ling before he can cross Lava Purgatory. Its duty normally limits intervention to catastrophes threatening Vermillion Bird City, which is why it initially refuses a private request and conditions its sacrifice on future protection for the city. Flame Soul diagnosis and inheritance

The Vermillion Bird can identify the elemental nature and flare history of Xiao Qi’s Flame Soul, explain why suppression worsens it, and distinguish the soul condition from an ordinary disease of the body. Its inheritance supplies Origin Flames and memories directly to that soul even though Xiao Qi’s body remains on Earth. The process requires months of uninterrupted presence in Lava Purgatory, begins with severe pain, prevents departure to either world, and depends on the inheritor enduring rather than losing consciousness. (Chapters 298 and 303–305, 357–361)

Current limitations

The guardian’s power is no longer independently available after its sacrifice. Xi Ling’s composite sovereignty and Xiao Qi’s Daughter of Vermillion Bird profession preserve aspects of its fire, sight, flight, destruction, and resistance, but neither grants the deceased being a new body or autonomous will. Vermillion Bird City consequently requires outside defenders during the demon-beast invasion, and no source-grounded resurrection of the guardian occurs by Chapter 850. • Xi Ling: The Vermillion Bird recognizes Xi Ling as the threatened continuation of Golden Crow and Phoenix fire. It releases her life contract, spends its own Origin Flames to restore her, and adds Vermillion Bird fire to her composite flame authority. (Chapters 297–305, 371–374, and 640–675)
• Xiao Qi: Xiao Qi’s Flame Soul makes her the compatible successor the guardian needs. The Vermillion Bird diagnoses her fatal condition, explains the risks, accepts her later decision, and passes on its flames and control memories, curing the condition while making her its Daughter. • Ling Chen: Ling’s persistence brings Xi Ling to Lava Purgatory and persuades the guardian to negotiate.
