Biography

The challenge at Bastion

Tristan confronted Sunny after mistaking his attention toward Nephis for lechery. His friend Mercy tried to pull him away, but Tristan demanded a duel to first blood. He even lent Sunny the powerful Aegis Rose greatsword Heart Breaker, chose a lighter sword for himself, and dismissed armor enchantments to create what he considered a fair advantage for an apparently ill-equipped opponent. (Chapters 1702–1703)

Sunny concealed his ability and evaded Tristan through feigned clumsiness, then exploited the exact first-blood condition to win with a punch. Enraged, Tristan attacked again, tripped over a manifested shadow, and fell from the rampart. The defeat exposed his impulsiveness more than a lack of training: the narration identifies him as a skilled Legacy, and he had held back when he believed his blade reached Sunny's shoulder. War, revelation, and renewed duty

Tristan later stood in the Sword Army beside his father. During the final collapse of the Domain War, he and Mercy fought while wounded and exhausted, helping protect the Awakened Ray and Fleur. A head wound did not prevent Tristan from recognizing that the supposedly harmless Master Sunless was the Lord of Shadows, although Mercy initially dismissed the realization as delirium. The encounter shows that political unification had not erased Tristan's reflexive prejudices.
