Rivalen

Rivalen, known as Shield Wall, is the gallant Saint of the Aegis Rose clan and father of Tristan. His Aspect specializes in defense and terrain control, allowing him to form vast barriers of interlocked shields and assume a heavily protected rhinoceros Transformation. He survives the catastrophic Vanishing Lake ambush and remains among humanity's Saints after the Domain War. (Chapters 1870, 1881–1904, 2082, 2210–2222, and 2783)

Biography

Shield of the Citadel expedition

Rivalen joined Sunny's war party during Valor's advance through Godgrave. Although a proud Legacy Saint, he accepted the unfamiliar commander's authority without protest and brought a defensive Aspect particularly suited to holding territory. During the conquest of Vanishing Lake, he answered Nephis's warning instantly, sealing the castle gate with an invisible grid of shields after Silent Stalker's opening arrows killed and wounded fellow Saints. His barrier protected the surviving force from further fire while they entered the trapped Citadel. (Chapters 1870, 1881, and 1885–1886)

The ambush inside nearly killed him. Forced out of his rhinoceros form, missing an eye, and surrounded by reanimated comrades, Rivalen prepared to destroy his own body rather than let Ki Song use it against Valor. Sunny's Shadow, Fiend, interrupted the execution and gave him time to survive. Rivalen then spent his remaining strength shielding the battered conquest force from a prolonged flood of Ki Song's power; the barrier cracked and weakened, but held until Song withdrew. Service after Vanishing Lake

Rivalen recovered enough to accompany Anvil through the Hollows, using his armored Transformation to carry Cassie and Jest while its shield field protected the group. He later joined Nephis and other Saints in refusing to remain spectators when the Sword Army's soldiers were threatened. On the final battlefield, he stood with the Aegis Rose warriors and his son, his former gallantry subdued by the possibility that both could die in the coming clash. The battle that followed placed him against Nightmare Creatures rather than the Song army after Nephis turned on the Sovereigns. Rivalen was still fighting when Dar supported him with arrows, confirming that he survived the war's opening catastrophe. Years later he attended Nephis's council at the Immortal Flame estate as one of the gathered Saints of humanity. That is his latest direct appearance; a later order for Aegis Rose forces confirms the clan remains active but does not identify Rivalen personally. (Chapters 2222 and 2783; Chapter 2860)

Appearance and personality

Rivalen is a dashing, gallant man who wears ornate golden armor decorated with floral motifs. Even after weeks of Godgrave's attrition leave other Saints ragged, he preserves an almost obnoxiously polished manner and addresses commanders with courtly respect. Vanishing Lake costs him an eye and much of that effortless poise, while the final battlefield shows him grimly focused on his son rather than maintaining a heroic facade. His conduct supports the reputation for stalwart character attached to the name Shield Wall. Rivalen obeys battlefield command, accepts death for a cause, fears becoming a weapon against his comrades more than dying, and exhausts himself to protect survivors. He also displays humor and mild vanity, but these traits never override discipline. The late council establishes survival, not whether his injuries or experience permanently altered his outlook. Abilities and Aspect

Rivalen is a Saint whose Aspect explicitly excels in defense and terrain control. The corpus does not disclose its name, rank, his True Name, Flaw, or pre-Transcendent abilities. Interlocking shield fields

Rivalen can manifest invisible barriers whose momentary visible contours resemble grids of ghostly, interlocked shields. He closes a castle gateway rapidly, surrounds a group with a dome, and parts a flood of Ki Song's crimson power around injured allies. The fields can cover multiple Saints and can be deployed while Rivalen is severely wounded, making them valuable for both prepared terrain control and emergency protection. (Chapters 1885 and 1904)

The barriers have finite durability and depend on Rivalen's condition. Ki Song's power gradually cracks or corrodes the dome, and Rivalen collapses when its strain ends. The opening ambush also shows that the shield cannot retroactively stop attacks already through its closing gaps. Rivalen's Transcendent form is an enormous, heavily armored rhinoceros surrounded by the same interlocking-shield field. It can smash through the gates of an ancient Citadel, run swiftly through the Hollows, and carry several human riders across dangerous terrain. The form provides great momentum and protection but can be broken by peer Saints: Silent Stalker and reanimated Transcendents force Rivalen back into his human body and leave him critically wounded. • Tristan: Tristan is identified as Rivalen's son. Rivalen's attention turns toward him before the final battle, where both father and son stand with the Sword Army; both survive into the postwar period, although the corpus does not show a private exchange between them.
