June

June, code-named Corsair, is an Awakened veteran whose heightened perception and local slowing power support a career in security, assassination, and covert warfare. Recruited into the Shadow Clan after surviving Antarctica and Godgrave, he becomes a senior field operative and enters the Second Nightmare as the experienced protector of Tamar's cohort. (Chapters 2272–2275, 2415–2422, and 2749)

Biography

Soldier, mercenary, and Corsair

June was infected by the Nightmare Spell at sixteen, earned stellar Academy marks, and joined the government after Awakening. He served in the Second Irregular Company in East Antarctica, later retired into private security and bodyguard work, fought for the Sword Army through several Godgrave operations, and eventually rejoined government service. These successive careers gave him extensive combat experience without tying his loyalty permanently to one institution. (Chapter 2272)

In parallel, he built a clandestine reputation as Corsair, a black-market Nightmare Creature hunter, enforcer, and assassin with at least seventy-six confirmed contracts. He accepted morally questionable work but drew a line at employers engaged in what he considered abominable business, and he combined cynicism with practical self-interest. That combination helped him defeat every other contender in a vicious Cleaner selection trial, after which Kim recruited him as the next holder of the Corsair code name. (Chapter 2272)

Joining the Shadow Clan

June initially believed he was entering a government failsafe organization, accepting its tracking tattoo, mutable identification, and excellent pay. Kim then brought him through a hidden Dream Gate and revealed the Shadow Clan, the surviving Lord of Shadows, and its base on the Forgotten Shore. Although frightened by the concealed Supreme, June adapted quickly, met his new employer without denying what he saw, and submitted to the clan's training and secrecy. (Chapters 2272–2275)

After a month training under the Onyx Saint, learning the Mark of Shadows, and forming bonds with other operatives, June received an early mission because his black-market identity gave him access his new allies lacked. He embedded himself among supposed bank robbers while protecting hostages and discovering what zealots intended to steal. When an Ascended leader intervened, June used his own judgment to wait for sufficient information, then isolated the stronger enemy so Rain, Tamar, and Fleur could resolve the larger fight. (Chapters 2415–2422)

Countering Asterion and entering the Second Nightmare

June later led Shadow Clan teams against Asterion's hidden agents. He helped capture a sleeper agent for interrogation, infiltrated the Night Garden during a clan-wide strike, and continued to display a habit of emerging from frozen explosions with theatrical composure. These operations elevated him from a new recruit to a trusted leader whose teams could act across both worlds. (Chapters 2572, 2733, 2742, and 2882)

When Tamar assembled an Awakened cohort to challenge the Second Nightmare, June served as its oldest and most experienced protector. He guarded the rear through the Hollows, took point as the group approached the Seed, and answered Rain's request that he look after the others with humor rather than a promise he could not guarantee. The cohort entered the Nightmare, and the latest reference still anticipates what Ability June might receive as a Master, leaving its outcome unresolved. (Chapters 2749 and 2882)

Appearance and personality

June is a tall, handsome man old enough for the younger Rain to tease as an “old man,” though he indignantly describes himself as being in his prime. Years of combat leave scars from at least one near-fatal stealth attack. In clan operations he wears black gear and an Abomination mask, using an ordinary, forgettable presentation when he needs to pass as a criminal or civilian operative. (Chapters 2274, 2415, and 2749)

He is observant, composed, cynical, and professionally vain. His Aspect makes surprise difficult, reinforcing a reputation for ice-cold nerves, while experience lets him joke about danger and complain about amateur criminals even in combat. Money motivates him openly, but his conduct shows real standards: he protects hostages, takes the strongest enemy away from allies, and accepts responsibility for a younger Nightmare cohort. (Chapters 2272, 2415–2422, and 2749)

Abilities and Aspect

Accelerated perception

June's Dormant Aspect Ability sharpens his senses and accelerates how quickly he perceives and assesses his surroundings. When focused or flooded with adrenaline, the world appears to move in slow motion, giving him time to notice details and select a response. This is subjective acceleration, not actual control of time: June's body receives no matching speed increase and moves at the normal rate. (Chapter 2421)

Years of specialized training let him draw out the Ability's full potential and combine it with conditioning, observation, and tactical judgment. It explains his apparent reaction speed and composure, but does not make him impossible to surprise; a stealth specialist once approached closely enough to leave lasting scars, and Sunny's hidden subordinate later reaches him without detection. (Chapters 2274 and 2421)

Local slowing

June's Awakened Ability slows an area rather than selecting one creature. Bodies inside are physically slowed while their perception remains unchanged; those weaker than June are affected more, stronger beings less, and inanimate objects or phenomena most of all. He can place the effect ahead of himself to delay a bullet or an explosion and step aside, and he uses a wider field to buy Ray time to cut a bank's power. (Chapter 2421)

June is not immune to his own slowing field. Engaging a stronger opponent inside it can be fatal because June is hindered more than the enemy, so he must position the area with foresight and deactivate it before closing to melee. Essence suppression can make his control sluggish, although refined control lets him force the Ability through partial interference; the corpus does not provide the Aspect's name, Flaw, range, duration, or exact essence cost. (Chapters 2421–2422)

Combat and covert training

June's government, mercenary, and Shadow Clan training covers infiltration, assassination, hand-to-hand combat, firearms, knives, mission planning, and rapid structural assessment. Against an Ascended foe he identifies vulnerable arteries, uses a decorative wall as an escape path, and changes to blunt-force trauma when his blade cannot penetrate. Training cannot erase the rank gap: the Master's defense stops the Awakened weapon, and June must disengage once the stronger opponent recovers. (Chapters 2272, 2415, and 2421–2422)

Relationships

Sunny and Kim

Kim recognizes June's mixture of skill, discretion, and irreverence, recruits him, and guides him through the Shadow Clan's secrets. Sunny welcomes the experienced assassin enthusiastically and later trusts him with independent teams and the protection of people close to him. June fears the Supreme's power but responds to the person behind the Lord of Shadows persona with professional loyalty rather than worship. (Chapters 2272–2275, 2415–2422, and 2733–2742)

Tamar's cohort

June joins Tamar, Rain, Ray, and Fleur in field operations after his training. During the bank mission he deliberately draws the Ascended enemy away from the younger fighters and the hostages; years later, Tamar places him in the cohort entering the Second Nightmare. His banter with Rain shows familiarity, while his movement from rear guard to point reflects the protective role she asks him to assume. (Chapters 2415–2422 and 2749)

Items

June receives a dark Cleaner tattoo that grants access to secure systems and allows the organization to track him, along with identification that changes appearance for different covers. These government tools precede his transfer into the Shadow Clan, and their later condition is not stated. (Chapter 2272)

As a clan operative he bears the Mark of Shadows and uses black armor, an Abomination mask, firearms, and a black stiletto forged to manifest from darkness. The stiletto can appear instantly without revealing sparks, but as an Awakened weapon it fails against an Ascended defensive Ability; none of this equipment has a generated catalog page or a separately established final custody after June enters the Second Nightmare.
