Rufus Emberheart

Rufus Emberheart is the Animal Kingdom’s favored scion and a young cultivator of the Dao of Supremacy. His confidence and inherited advantage make him a seemingly untouchable rival for Jack, but when their tournament fight becomes a genuine struggle for survival, Rufus’s lack of experience proves fatal. (Chapters 52–107)

Biography

The Scion Who Expected to Win

Rufus enters the Integration Tournament as its favorite: the strongest of the scions, a noble descendant of the Animal Kingdom, and a fighter whose early matches end in effortless victories. During a match against Maylin Rubenstein, he strikes her down with a single paw swipe and then leaves the arena. When Jack challenges the ruling, Rufus calls the injury an accident, but accepts the judge’s penalty as a loss while presenting himself as fair. Jack sees the act as deliberate and refuses to let Rufus’s status erase the rules. Their first conflict is therefore about more than strength: Rufus assumes his rank will excuse the harm, while Jack insists that the tournament’s rules apply to him too. (Chapters 52–53)

Rufus’s tournament role is shaped by his confidence in his lineage and ability. He is allied with Gan Salin and Shard Presht, while other scions form a separate group; he also offers little attention to Jack until Jack confronts him. At the Integration auction, Rufus helps Alexander Petrovic buy a lotus, spending four million credits to win it and then handing it to him. He later bids against Jack for the Rainbow Dao Pill, escalating his offer to six million and using his companions’ funds after his own run out. When Jack refuses to yield to Rufus’s implied pressure and wins the bidding, Brock’s prank lands on Rufus’s chest. Rufus answers with a powerful phantom paw aimed at Brock, forcing Jack to intercept it. The Hand of God fines and blacklists both fighters, but the confrontation hardens their conflict: Rufus treats Jack’s refusal as an affront to his supremacy, while Jack understands the feud as one that cannot be settled by backing down. (Chapters 68–76)

A Rival Becomes a Mortal Enemy

Rufus’s strengths and weaknesses become clearer in his later tournament fights. He offers Li Xiang the chance to resign, then meets the older martial artist’s sustained close-range attack with firm defense and aggressive counters. When he releases phantom paws across the arena, Li Xiang recognizes the same technique Jack had blocked at the auction. Rufus can overwhelm the opponent physically, but he also welcomes a prolonged exchange because he expects to win. Meanwhile, Jack and Rufus’s mutual Dao pressure makes each refuse to yield: Jack believes retreat would damage his Dao Root, and Rufus believes his Dao of Supremacy requires him to crush the challenger. (Chapters 85, 90–96)

Before their final tournament bout, Rufus breaks through to E-Grade. He tells Jack they have both just reached the same level, formed perfect Dao Seeds, received the same title benefits, and taken Immortality Serums. Rufus expects the fight to prove that he is superior by skill, but underestimates how Jack’s experience changes the contest. Jack’s early escape attempt draws Rufus away from the arena, where Rufus activates his King Form and dominates him. The form does not greatly increase his raw power; instead it channels supremacy through his movements, making his attacks and defense feel inviolable. Rufus’s rapid charges and paw strikes nearly kill Jack, but the fight turns when Jack adapts and lands a clean punch. Rufus has been raised as a prince, with an immortal expected to save him if danger becomes real; he has never had to fight for his life. When Jack’s persistence forces him to recognize the possibility of defeat, Rufus’s certainty falters and his Dao weakens. Jack keeps attacking after Rufus loses consciousness, believing that stopping would let Rufus recover and return for his allies. Jack’s Meteor Shower leaves Rufus crushed and unrecognizable. The planetary overseer cannot intervene because of the Barren High’s presence, and Rufus’s death is later confirmed. (Chapters 104–107)

The Emberheart Name After His Death

Rufus does not return as a living character after the tournament. Later references identify him as the scion Jack killed, and the consequences fall chiefly on his father, Artus Emberheart. Artus’s grief and hatred help drive his pursuit of Jack; Jack’s killing of Rufus becomes one part of the chain that culminates in Artus killing Jack’s son, Eric. (Chapters 248, 282, 286, 299, 413, 456)

Rufus’s family legacy also remains relevant to the surviving characters. Later revelations describe the Emberhearts’ secret auxiliary technique as a skill that enhances physical ability, and Jack remembers Rufus using it to strengthen his body. These discussions explain a technique and its consequences for the family, but do not show Rufus returning, reincarnating, or taking another identity. His influence continues through the feud without changing the fact that he died in the tournament. (Chapters 299, 413, 439, 456)

Appearance and personality

Rufus is a leonine man about six and a half feet tall, with a golden mane, lion paws and claws, and a commanding, regal presence. He wears chainmail armor and armored trousers during the final tournament fight. His aura can press on others like an overwhelming kingly presence. He is confident, proud, and accustomed to deference; he treats opponents as inferior and expects his strength to decide disputes. The tournament fight shows the cost of that upbringing: when no rescuer arrives, he struggles to accept danger and then defeat. (Chapters 53, 70, 85, 104–106)

Abilities and cultivation

Rufus is a leonine cultivator of the Dao of Supremacy. He combines close-range martial arts, paw projections, rapid movement, and a named King Form. His family’s auxiliary technique also enhances physical capability. The source describes effects and applications but does not fully explain the mechanics or costs of every technique. (Chapters 52–53, 70, 85, 104–106, 301, 439)

Dao of Supremacy and Dao Seed

Rufus’s Dao gives his presence an aura of command that can make opponents feel small or overawed. Jack experiences this as pressure and an illusion of facing a king, but his soul and own Dao let him resist it. During their final fight, Rufus channels supremacy through each movement; Jack recognizes this as the basis of King Form, which increases the force and certainty of Rufus’s actions without substantially raising his stats. His perfect Dao Seed remains matched to Jack’s at their E-Grade breakthrough, but fear causes Rufus’s Dao to falter during the fight. No further Dao advancement is shown before his death. (Chapters 70, 76, 104–106)

Paw strikes and Inevitable Charge

Rufus’s principal attacks are powerful paw strikes, some projected as enormous blue phantom paws that can cross the arena and hit at range. The projections carry enough force to threaten Brock, damage Jack, and overwhelm Li Xiang after breaking through his defense. Rufus also uses rapid footwork called Inevitable Charge, repeatedly shifting position and leaving afterimages as he closes on Jack. The movement resembles teleportation but is identified as a movement skill; no spatial mechanism is given. (Chapters 53, 74–75, 85, 104–106)

King Form and Emberheart technique

Rufus’s King Form is a combat form that lets him channel the Dao of Supremacy through his movements. Its activation is marked by a roar and a rising aura; it grants a noticeable increase, though the increase in raw power is limited. It gives him the edge over Jack at first, but Jack’s refined technique and endurance eventually let him match the form. Later, Jack learns that the Emberheart and Lonihor families can combine the Dao of Supremacy with their innate physiques to trigger lineage-specific transformations. The Emberheart family’s secret auxiliary technique can clad the body in electricity and greatly improve speed and power; Jack later recognizes Rufus as having used that technique to augment his physique. Whether every feature of Rufus’s King Form comes from the family technique remains unclear. (Chapters 104–106, 301, 419, 439)

Rufus also uses unarmed martial arts, claws, a roar that disrupts opponents, and durable leonine physiology. In close combat he blocks and parries quickly, while his projected paws let him attack at range. His strength and durability are not unlimited: Jack matches and then exceeds him through adaptation and persistence, while Rufus’s fear weakens his Dao and leaves him unable to recover once Jack sustains the attack. (Chapters 85, 104–106)
