Shard Presht
Shard Presht is a sharken scion who fights with paired fin-blades and the Dao of Momentum. His hostility toward Jack grows from family loyalty and rivalry, and he meets Jack in two tournament fights before they face each other again in the battle against Earth's scions. (Chapters 66–78, 102–103)
Biography
Integration Tournament
Shard enters the tournament as a scion with a reputation that intimidates Edgar; he has not yet fought seriously in the competition. When he is matched against John Brown, he steps out with a deliberate display of his sharken features and takes the bout as a personal challenge. He tells Jack that he will destroy him for his cousin. Shard does not identify the cousin; Jack connects the threat to Gan Salin, who is standing beside the arena. During their first duel, Shard exposes that John Brown is Jack Rust, turning Jack's assumed anonymity into public knowledge. (Chapters 65–67)
Shard's confidence comes from the speed and control offered by his Dao. He uses his twin blades to pressure Jack, accelerating them, changing their paths, and stopping them in midair before sending them back at unexpected angles. Jack ultimately adapts and beats him. Shard remains near the other scions afterward, watches their tense exchange with Rufus, and participates in the auction and their gatherings. He keeps his enmity toward Jack; the events make the rivalry public rather than ending it. (Chapters 67–75)
Shard returns for a second match against Jack Rust in the finals. He attacks with greater intent, but Jack's greater strength and adaptation overwhelm him in a brutal defeat. Later, during the scions' battle against Earth, Shard fights alongside Fesh Wui against Dorman and Li Xiang. They bring him down as the scion force retreats. His fate after that battle is unknown. (Chapters 77–78, 102–103)
Appearance and personality
Shard has slick gray skin, slit eyes with blue irises, a fin on his back, gills along his thick throat, and webbing between his fingers. He wears brown shorts and carries paired fin-blades. He presents himself as a mocking, confident fighter, but his declared motive in the first duel is to avenge or defend a cousin. (Chapter 66)
Abilities and cultivation
Shard's fighting style combines close-range blade work with the Dao of Momentum. He can manipulate the momentum of his weapons, giving his fin-blades sudden speed and redirecting their trajectories in midair. His named technique, Fin Sail Dance, makes a fast-moving curtain of blades that discourages an opponent from reaching through it. (Chapters 67, 78)
The Dao also lets Shard arrest his own movement in midair and continue an attack from a changed position. His acceleration is not instantaneous: Jack notices a build-up before Shard reaches full speed and uses that delay to read and counter his attacks. No formal grade, level, class, or later advancement is known for Shard. (Chapters 67, 78)
Relationships
- Jack Rust: Shard first fights Jack while he is using the name John Brown, then exposes his identity and challenges him again in the tournament finals. Their clashes establish Shard as a recurring rival, though Jack defeats him in both bouts. (Chapters 66–67, 77–78)
- Gan Salin: Shard is aligned with Gan Salin among the Animal Kingdom scions. Shard cites a cousin as the reason for targeting Jack; the cousin's identity is not explicitly given. (Chapters 66, 69–76)
- Dorman Whistles and Li Xiang: They fight Shard during the battle against the scions and overwhelm him as their side retreats. (Chapter 103)
Items
Shard's paired fin-blades are his combat weapons; they are not individually named or treated as separate notable artifacts. (Chapters 66–78)
