Li Xiang

Li Xiang is a martial arts grandmaster whose precise technique and sense of honor shape the Integration Tournament and its final battle.

Biography

A grandmaster who made technique visible

Li Xiang first drew attention as an elderly, slight martial artist facing a swordsman whose weapon carried the Dao of the Sword. Although the opponent’s blows appeared too fast to evade, Li Xiang redirected a blade with his fingers, read small flaws in the swordsman’s attacks, and ended the match by catching the sword between three fingers. His display of the Dao of Martial Arts showed Jack and Vivi how precise technique could control a fight even without a weapon or conspicuous strength. Li later defeated Gan Salin by meeting his erratic attacks with disciplined defense and counters, knocking him unconscious without continuing to hurt him. (Chapters 57, 79)

Pride, age, and a final test against Rufus

The System had revitalized Li Xiang, but it had not made him young again. His long life of martial arts practice, travel, and teaching had left him with a deep body of experience; the tournament gave that experience a public test and renewed his desire to fight. When he faced Edgar Allano, Li Xiang identified the young mage as the strongest wizard he had fought and challenged him to prove whether human ingenuity could answer the System’s powers. He read and adapted to Edgar’s attack patterns, pushed through magical constructs, and redirected attacks, but the match also showed that a master could be hurt: it was the first time in the tournament he had been injured. He ultimately spared Edgar and urged him to strengthen his fundamentals. (Chapters 65, 80)

Li’s honor and his disciples’ expectations then drew him into a losing fight with Rufus Emberheart. His mastery let him predict minute changes and keep pace with Rufus’s attacks for a time, despite lacking the speed to match him. Rufus’s roar disrupted Li’s concentration and tempo; the ensuing exchange left Li badly injured, with a broken arm that he set back into place before continuing. He refused to yield, but Rufus’s superior physical power finally launched him across the arena. Li survived the tournament and later helped Master Shol train Jack, accepting a sparring role even though Shol judged his skill too polished and his strength too low to be an ideal adaptation test. (Chapters 85, 90, 93–94)

During the alliance battle, Li fought alongside Dorman Whistles against the scions and helped bring down Shard Presht. When Dorman was in danger, Li put himself between him and an ice spike. The attack pierced Li’s abdomen; he slowed it enough to give Dorman time to act, then died after urging his fellow fighter to be brave, strong, and honorable. His last intervention saved Dorman and gave Jack a final image of the honor that had shaped Li’s choices throughout the tournament. (Chapters 102–103)

Appearance and personality

Li Xiang is an elderly, short, thin Asian-looking man with white hair and a long, narrow mustache. His deep, clear eyes and still posture convey mastery before he begins to move. He is courteous and generous toward capable opponents, praises Edgar’s skill, spares him after their bout, and responds to Jack’s apology with laughter. His conduct in the tournament and his last words to Dorman show that honor and the example he sets for students matter to him. (Chapters 57, 65, 85, 94, 103)

Abilities and cultivation

Li’s power combines the System’s numeric levels and ranked skills with a Dao of Martial Arts. At his tournament introduction, Li is Level 31, and Martial Arts IV is later named as his skill. How he acquired that skill rank is unknown, and no lower ranks are recorded. He has practiced since infancy, traveled widely to learn martial arts, and developed the ability to enter a focused flow state at will. The System’s revitalization restored his drive and vitality but did not reverse his age. (Chapters 57, 65, 79, 85)

Dao of Martial Arts and combat reading

Li uses economical movement, precise timing, and close observation to find and exploit small openings. Against the swordsman, he shifts a blade aside with his fingers, enters through the resulting opening, and controls the fight until the opponent yields. Against Edgar, he identifies patterns in attacks that appear chaotic, threads through wind and sand constructs, tears apart a mana mantle, and redirects fireballs. His martial arts let him handle varied attacks with his body alone, but do not remove the limits of his physical speed: Rufus eventually overwhelms him with a faster, denser assault and a roar that breaks Li’s concentration. (Chapters 57, 65, 85)

Ranked skill and flow state

The narration calls Li’s skill “Martial Arts IV.” In his fight with Rufus, Li enters a flow state in which faint cues resolve into readable patterns, allowing him to anticipate changes in tempo and respond efficiently despite the speed gap. He had trained himself to enter this state at will, but it could not compensate indefinitely for Rufus’s physical advantage or prevent the effect of the roar. No later upgrade or change to the skill is shown. (Chapter 85)
