Artus Emberheart

Artus Emberheart is the former Warden of Hell whose loyalty to the Hand of God and hatred of Jack Rust become inseparable after Jack kills his son, Rufus. Artus’s decision to use Eric Rust as leverage turns their rivalry into a family tragedy, and Jack’s final punishment leaves Artus alive but helpless in the void. (Chapters 269–459)

Biography

Warden of Hell and Enemy of Jack Rust

Artus first appears as Warden of Hell, a powerful administrator who directs his disciples and deacons to capture intruders. He weighs their safety against his command: when a young disciple asks what to do if the enemy proves too strong, Artus directs him to rely on the deacon assigned to shadow the group, but says no one will intervene if they fail. That detachment is part of how he governs the prison planet; he expects subordinates to accept the risks of their assignments. (Chapter 269)

After Jack defeats and kills Rufus, Artus becomes personally invested in capturing him. He is also held responsible by the Hand of God for failing to report Jack’s appearance and for attempting to present him as a gift to curry favor. Artus apologizes to Eva Solvig and professes loyalty to the Hand, but his anger at Jack remains. Eva orders him to search Hell for Jack, then—after the search fails—makes him responsible for tracking Jack across the galaxy and capturing him alive. Artus accepts the punishment while privately resolving to make Jack suffer for Rufus’s death and the Hand’s treatment of him. (Chapters 285–286)

As Warden, Artus uses his authority to keep the Animal Kingdom’s conflict with Jack under control, but his personal hatred repeatedly compromises that role. When Jack survives on Hell and humiliates the faction, Artus threatens to kill him and destroy his family, making the conflict public. He later instructs the Grand Elder that Maximus must kill Jack despite the Hand of God’s no-deaths condition for their duel. The choice contributes to the Animal Kingdom’s public humiliation, and the Ancestor removes Artus from the faction, revokes his Elder rights, and gives him to the Hand of God as a late C-Grade captive. Artus’s Dao is already broken by then; he has lost his office, faction, reputation, son, and disciple, but turns the humiliation into a renewed vow of revenge. (Chapters 296, 299–303)

Exile, Obsession, and a New Target

The Animal Kingdom’s former Warden is reduced to an unwanted dependent of the Hand of God. By Chapter 411, he has lost nearly everything besides his life: Jack killed Rufus and Sapasun, Artus was defeated and exiled, and even his relatives and disciples avoid him. Yet the Hand uses him to lead the purge of the Exploding Sun faction, which places him in a position to threaten Jack’s former allies. Eva remains his superior and repeatedly restrains his impulsive choices; Artus obeys her orders while keeping his obsession with Jack. His cracked Dao leaves his aura unstable, but over the following year he approaches repairing it and resumes a command role when Eva entrusts him with the Hand’s forces. (Chapters 411–415, 442–443)

When Jack and his allies escape through a damaged teleporter, Artus arrives with Eva and catches Eric Rust. He holds the boy in the vacuum of space, sustaining him with a Dao shield and using his voice to draw Jack out of the Animal Abyss. Artus frames the kidnapping as repayment for Rufus’s death and his own losses. Jack pleads for Eric’s release, but Artus refuses, arguing that a cultivator can have many children and that Jack is foolish to risk everything for one. Artus has made the hostage personal: he wants Jack to experience the despair he associates with Rufus’s death, not simply surrender. He snaps Eric’s throat in front of Jack. The act shatters Jack’s remaining restraint, drives him to overdraw his power, and leaves his Dao cracked; Artus, meanwhile, believes Jack died in the Abyss and briefly returns to command with renewed confidence. (Chapters 418–419, 426–429, 431–443)

The Last Confrontation

When Jack returns, Artus is part of the Hand of God and Animal Kingdom leadership waiting on Animal Planet. Artus fears Jack but still wants him to die and suffer. When Jack attacks, Artus stays out of the battle because he knows he cannot win. Jack’s allies defeat the Kingdom’s defenders, and Brock restrains Artus in golden chains. Artus tells Jack that Jack has taken his son, honor, and faction, and urges him to kill him; he claims there is no remaining punishment that can hurt him. (Chapters 454–458)

Jack chooses to punish him without killing him. Brock’s chains paralyze Artus, imprison his soul, seal his Dao, and prevent him from moving his energy or taking his own life. Artus’s Dao is described as shattered, and his strength barely qualifies as C-Grade. Jack then carries him to the edge of the galaxy and casts him into the void, where he will remain conscious, immobile, and unable to act. The narration says Artus drifts deeper into the darkness but does not show whether he is later recovered, destroyed, or otherwise released. (Chapter 459)

Appearance and personality

Artus is a leonine with a proud, imposing presence. As Warden he gives orders with confidence and expects subordinates to obey; after his exile, he is often deferential to Eva Solvig, while his eyes and aura reveal his fixation on Jack. His actions become increasingly driven by grief, humiliation, and revenge. He can suppress his anger for strategic reasons, but repeatedly returns to threats and reckless choices when Jack is involved. (Chapters 269, 285–286, 296, 303, 415, 442, 454–459)

Abilities and cultivation

Artus is a late C-Grade leonine and Warden of Hell at his first major appearance. He has wide-range Dao perception and is shown traveling through spatial openings; he can sense approaches across roughly a hundred miles. His Dao is unnamed, and whether perception and spatial movement share a mechanism is unknown. He is powerful enough to threaten lower-grade cultivators, but his authority and combat strength do not make him a match for the later Jack. His Dao’s fracture reduces his effective strength, and Brock’s final restraints seal his remaining energy and body. (Chapters 269, 296, 303, 415, 459)

Dao perception and spatial movement

Artus’s Dao perception extends around one hundred miles, allowing him to sense visitors before they reach his door. He uses spatial movement to appear at distant locations and to pursue targets, including Jack’s group after they escape. His Dao is unnamed; its exact mechanics, costs, and range beyond the stated perception distance are unknown. When his Dao cracks, his aura becomes chaotic; his ability to use it is later limited further when Brock seals his Dao and energy. (Chapters 269, 285–286, 289, 415, 418, 459)

Dao shield and restraint

During the kidnapping, Artus sustains Eric in vacuum with a Dao shield, keeping the untrained boy alive. He also amplifies Eric’s voice across space to reach Jack. The shield’s exact mechanics and energy cost are unknown. In the final confrontation, Brock’s golden chains—powered by the Dao of Brohood—overwhelm Artus: they immobilize his body, imprison his soul, and seal his Dao and remaining energy. Artus cannot escape or counter them with the strength left to him. (Chapters 418, 426, 459)
