Gan Salin
Gan Salin is a canine scion who begins as Jack Rust’s unpredictable rival and becomes one of his closest allies. His path turns on choosing loyalty as a counterweight to the destructive risks of cultivating the Dao of Insanity. (Chapters 41–42, 221, 307, 443, 552)
Biography
A scion who tested Jack
Salin first appears as the head of Henry’s Fang, a satellite faction he admits was weak. As one of five scions of the Animal Kingdom—a B-Grade power ruling their constellation—he is responsible for finding a candidate for the Integration Tournament. He offers Jack a place under his banner and promises resources, but his pitch mixes genuine interest in Jack’s strength with a scion’s assumption that a native should accept his patronage. When Jack refuses, Salin turns the negotiation into a fight. (Chapters 36, 41)
Their clash shows both his technique and the danger beneath his casual manner. Salin’s Root of Resolve gives his strikes an unnerving certainty; he uses Canine Dash to dart around Jack, and Five-Star Grasp and Tail Swipe to attack with clawed hands and low, destabilizing movement. Once the first Root gives way to his stronger Root of Insanity, his reason recedes and he attacks with the speed, durability, and unpredictability of a wild dog. Jack ultimately wins, but Salin escapes by crushing a wooden doll that produces a blue flare. (Chapters 41–42)
Salin returns as a tournament fighter and loses to Vivi Eragorn. At Level 41 and with two Dao Roots, he pushes through her fire long enough to wound her, but her successive rivers of flame burn his arm and leave him without momentum. He refuses her offered hand and leaves for treatment. Later, he fights against Jack’s alliance; after being badly injured, he is overwhelmed by Brock and the dog pack rather than killed. The rivalry remains real, but the encounter leaves room for the relationship to change. (Chapters 58–59, 102–106)
From hunted scion to trusted companion
When Jack and Brock flee the Animal Kingdom’s Hounds, Salin appears at the shuttle window and chooses to help them escape. He joins them for Trial Planet, explaining that canines often betray the Kingdom and that he had already been on the wrong side of its hunters. Though his piloting nearly turns their landing into a disaster, he improvises a cover story, gives Jack manacles to make their escape convincing, kills a teleporter guard who would have stopped them, and helps them reach the Hand of God’s portal. On Trial Planet he openly identifies himself by his Dao and presents Jack as a friend. The rescue closes the feud with Jack: Salin had once tried to recruit him as a useful candidate, but now risks himself to get him out alive. (Chapters 122–124)
Their friendship becomes more reciprocal when Jack discovers Salin caged and reduced to scraps in the Village Ring. Salin explains that his betrayal of the Hounds angered Bocor, and that the noble families’ status offers only limited protection. Jack chooses to rescue him despite the danger; Nauja also sides with Salin after seeing his treatment. The group’s loyalty is tested repeatedly as they move through the rings. Salin contributes as a fighter and guide, but low levels leave him vulnerable: at Level 78, his Dao cannot overcome a peak-E-Grade space monster, and at Level 82 he has to evade a Level-124 Elite ogre until Brock intervenes. He nevertheless keeps fighting alongside the group, gaining levels and deepening the friendship that began as a bargain. (Chapters 162–181, 212, 245, 254)
During the Trial Planet expedition, Salin confronts the Sage over the damage the Sage’s earlier choices caused him. Salin attacks and tears out the Sage’s heart, but the Sage restores himself and warns that unchecked Entropy would make Salin increasingly deranged and eventually turn his friends into enemies. He suggests adding a Root of Order to balance the path. Salin initially takes the warning as advice to consider, then, after watching Jack’s achievement in the Final Ring and recognizing how much he values Jack, Nauja, and Brock, deliberately cultivates a new Root to keep his insanity aligned with his loyalties. That root becomes the Dao Root of Loyalty, giving his dangerous path a chosen purpose rather than removing his insanity. (Chapters 213, 221)
Choosing Jack over the Animal Kingdom
Salin returns to Earth as a key fighter in the alliance against the Animal Kingdom. During the battle he fights Fesh Wui and an elef scion, despite their combined pressure and the elef’s ability to heal Fesh Wui. Salin’s new Root of Loyalty anchors his decision to stand with his companions: he says he will do what is right for them or die trying. With Brother Tao’s support and Nauja’s partnership, Salin helps defeat the scions. His choice is explicit when Fesh Wui calls him a traitor: Salin says Jack treated him better than the Kingdom and that he would spend every one of a hundred lives fighting at Jack’s side. (Chapters 307–312)
After the battle, Salin’s role is no longer that of an Animal Kingdom scion recruiting candidates; he is one of Jack’s chosen brothers. He and Nauja continue to travel with the group, and Salin helps plan the assault on Hell by using his unpredictability to outmaneuver expectations. He is candid about his family tie to the Kingdom: his father is a C-Grade, they are no longer in contact, and Salin asks Jack to spare him. The reason for their estrangement is unknown. (Chapters 317, 324–325, 355, 358, 450)
The Bro Squad and the wider war
After a five-year separation, Salin and Nauja reunite with Jack and Brock while the group is caught up in the wider conflict. Salin’s humor and erratic manner are unchanged, but the reunion establishes him as one of Jack’s best friends. He and Nauja have traveled widely together; Salin shares what he knows about the galaxy and helps the group move through hostile territory. Their long partnership is also tactical: he and Nauja have fought together many times and can combine his mind-bending attack with her ranged bombardment. (Chapters 412–418)
At the Hand of God outpost, Salin’s World of Insanity helps him hold off a crowd of D-Grades. He threads disorienting nonsense through the battlefield, trapping or distracting opponents and disrupting their movement; when Nauja’s bombardment overlaps with it, the pair cut off the enemies’ escape routes. Salin has become powerful enough in the late D-Grade to outperform most peak D-Grade cultivators, though the narration attributes much of that advantage to his Trial Planet titles. He remains an important combatant, not an unbeatable one: the larger enemy formation is dangerous, and he depends on coordination with Nauja and Brock. (Chapter 418)
Salin and Nauja later return when Jack is believed dead. By then they have reached the peak of the D-Grade. Salin comforts Jack when he reappears and affirms that the group is family. When Jack, exhausted and overwhelmed by grief, tries to push onward alone, Salin joins the others in standing in his way; he tells Jack that they are protecting him. Their intervention helps Jack accept support and recover his sense of connection. Salin is among Jack’s old friends at the banquet before the final conflict, the latest confirmed indication that he is alive and still part of Jack’s circle. (Chapters 443, 455, 460–461, 552)
Appearance and personality
Salin appears humanlike, with pale skin, short dark hair, and long, prominent canines. He has a youthful face and often wears a relaxed or goofy smile; when his insanity rises, his eyes redden, foam gathers at his mouth, and he moves and attacks like a dog. In battle he sometimes wears clawed gauntlets. (Chapters 41–42, 59, 307, 413)
He is playful, irreverent, and prone to absurd jokes, but his humor does not mean he is indifferent. The Dao of Insanity can cloud his reason and make him reckless, while his later Root of Loyalty gives him a deliberate commitment to protect his friends. His emotional maturity shows in his ability to recognize envy without letting it govern him, and in his eventual choice to redirect his cultivation rather than abandon his friends. (Chapters 42, 221, 309, 418)
Abilities and cultivation
Salin is a canine cultivator whose power draws on the System’s numeric levels and grade ladder, as well as Dao Roots. He is first identified as a Canine of Earth-387 and an Animal Kingdom scion. He uses three Roots across his development: Resolve and Insanity are established by his early fights, and he later cultivates Loyalty. His latest confirmed grade is peak D. (Chapters 41–42, 59, 221, 443)
Dao of Insanity and Dao Roots
Salin’s Dao of Insanity is tied to a Root that can supplant his calmer Root of Resolve in combat. When he enters this state, his reason diminishes, his eyes redden, and his movements become harder to predict. It boosts his speed, ability to endure punishment, and relentless attack; he can continue fighting through damage that would force another fighter to retreat. The tradeoff is impaired judgment and a tendency toward reckless aggression. The Sage warns that advancing along the path of Entropy could eventually make Salin dangerous to those around him, which is why Salin cultivates Loyalty as a balancing Root rather than rejecting his insanity. (Chapters 41–42, 59, 213, 221)
The Dao’s later expression includes a distortion of reality: Salin dodges Fesh Wui by twisting reality to appear behind him, and later uses the same effect to change position and create multiple apparent bodies. These maneuvers distort his position and create deception, but their range, duration, and cost are unknown. Salin can be pressured by fast aerial opponents and attacks that outlast his ability to reposition; even his reality-warping maneuvers do not prevent exhaustion or injury. (Chapters 309, 312)
World of Insanity
After reaching D-Grade, Salin develops the World of Insanity, a special ability that draws enemies into a disorienting experience. Its manifested effect lets him weave strands of insanity through the air: enemies lose focus, become caught in his nonsensical speech, and have their movement hindered. At the Hand of God outpost, he disrupts D-Grade groups and formations while Nauja’s attacks land. The ability works especially well with her bombardment, which denies opponents escape routes while Salin’s effect interferes with their response. Its numerical range, duration, and resistance threshold are unknown. (Chapter 418)
Canine combat techniques
Salin’s close-combat style uses claws, speed, and low, animal-like movement. Canine Dash lets him sprint on all fours and circle opponents; Five-Star Grasp is a clawing, gripping strike, and Tail Swipe trips an opponent from below. He can fight with natural claws or clawed gauntlets. His first fight shows that this style can trouble a stronger, durable opponent, but Jack’s greater Strength and momentum let him take the attacks and eventually overpower Salin. Salin also sustains severe burns when Vivi controls the arena with fire, demonstrating that his endurance has limits. (Chapters 41–42, 58–59)
Tactical knowledge
Salin’s years studying in the Animal Kingdom gave him practical knowledge about cultivation, faction politics, the Trial Planet, and the System’s energy economy. He explains that the System can absorb part of the released Dao from a defeated enemy, while the fraction directed into stats decreases at higher grades even as the total energy gained can increase. He also understands the Animal Kingdom’s internal structure and the risks of the warped region around a black hole. (Chapters 41, 124, 169, 420, 450)
