Erinys

Erinys is a Half-ling Ferryman of the Underworld, the daughter of the death god Thanatos, and one of the seven women whose union manifests Cathy, the Heavenly Virtue of Hope. She becomes William's guide when he enters the land of the dead to find his wives, using her knowledge, badge, and vessels to move him through its layered bureaucracy. Her longing to see the living world and her affection for William eventually lead her to defy her father's attempt to keep her below. She later reconciles with Thanatos, joins William's family, pilots her flying ship in the War of Destruction, and becomes William's wife. Appearance and personality

Erinys is a doll-like Half-ling a little over three feet tall, with blonde hair, blue eyes like her father's, and an appearance that makes her seem younger than her actual age. At their first meeting William describes her near-perfect beauty as both innocent and touched by more horror than her small form suggests. Her Ferryman uniform disguises that form beneath a three-meter-tall hooded figure, while her divine lineage can manifest four pairs of gray wings for flight. Curious, lively, affectionate, and sometimes spoiled, Erinys approaches Underworld authority with a mix of sincere public service and mischievous privilege. She gives surprisingly useful counseling despite learning much of her romantic vocabulary from serialized dramas, uses her Ferryman badge to skip queues, and delights in concerts, online shopping, singing, and the prospect of becoming an idol. Beneath that comic confidence is profound loneliness caused by Thanatos's emotional absence. She is briefly tempted by the idea of binding William to the Underworld so he cannot leave her, but rejects it; later she risks her father's anger, protects both father and lover from killing one another, and finally voices years of hurt directly. Biography

The Holy Order and the Underworld

Erinys meets William while working as a Ferryman in Limbo and immediately recognizes that he is alive. She wants to visit the Surface World, while he needs a route through the Underworld to recover Chiffon, Ashe, Sidonie, and Celine. Because taking him directly into restricted layers could anger her father, Erinys offers a practical bargain instead: she explains the Circles, finds work that earns Hell Credits, and promises shortcuts once William can pay the required passage costs. Her counseling booth, Ferryman authority, and route knowledge transform an impossible search into a navigable sequence of jobs and journeys. She is not merely carried along; she sets terms, chooses routes, warns William about hazards, and repeatedly uses her badge to secure access that an ordinary traveler would be denied. Living and traveling together turns their exchange into companionship. Erinys shares her home because she is lonely, follows William into deeper Circles, and introduces him to Kasogonaga and the friends he thought dead. She helps him find Chiffon and the women in Lust's Abode, then continues to the Plains of Wrath, where she shelters the rescued and pregnant Celine aboard her ship. Celine's request that she not trap William below forces Erinys to confront an ugly possibility: keeping him would end her loneliness but betray the person she has come to care for. Her decision becomes costly when William leaves. Erinys, devastated that they did not say goodbye, is pushed through a divine mirror toward Heaven's Gate on her nineteenth birthday; her voice is taken during the crossing, and Thanatos binds her before she can reach William. William seizes temporary authority over the Domain, frees her, and asks what gift she wants. Erinys chooses to go with him rather than recover her voice, making the Surface World and a life beside him her deliberate priority. She arrives in Hestia mute but hopeful, receives a temporary replacement voice through William's System, and admits that she wants the warmth, family, and love she never found in her isolated Underworld home. The Grand Alliance and the War of Destruction

In Hestia, Erinys builds an identity beyond her father's Domain. She becomes close to Medusa and Cherry, supports William while his memories are damaged, and learns that she is one of seven women needed to find Hope. When Erinys, Haleth, Amelia, Pearl, Priscilla, Anh, and Vesta gather, they manifest Cathy, whose existence and knowledge allow William's recovery to proceed. Erinys's role is essential but collective: she is a face and component identity of Hope, not an independently complete bearer of the Heavenly Virtue. Her relationship with William also develops without either pretending certainty too early; after she says she hopes what they feel is love, both choose to explore that bond rather than define it through obligation. The effort to retrieve William's wives' souls brings Erinys back into direct conflict with Thanatos. She hides and operates her ship in the Underworld, safeguards the crystal vials containing the souls, and begs her father to stop beating William. When William's Godslaying attack threatens Thanatos, Erinys places herself between them and is wounded, choosing the survival of both people she loves over victory for either. The crisis produces the confrontation she had avoided for years: Erinys tells Thanatos how his absence left her alone, insists that she will live on the Surface, and promises regular visits instead of accepting confinement. Thanatos finally embraces her and gives William a protective father's warning; William, in turn, states that Erinys will be his wife rather than a disposable companion. (Chapters 1409–1417)

Erinys marries William with Thanatos's blessing and then takes an active support role in the War of Destruction. She coordinates the timing of a prepared battlefield artifact, pilots her flying ship close enough for the Sin-bearers to attack, evades divine fire, and catches Superbia when Surtr destroys the vessel. After the war, Erinys remains William's wife and part of the household she chose. The latest period shows her four months pregnant with his child and looking toward a future shared with her friends, completing her movement from an isolated Ferryman who could only dream of the living world to a person with family ties in both life and death. Erinys is a licensed Ferryman of the Underworld. She understands the Circles, passage rules, Hell Credit economy, restricted routes, and hazards such as the illusions between Gluttony's Paradise and Lust's Abode. Her badge identifies her office, protects her from ordinary interference, and grants privileged access, while her boats carry passengers across both water and air. These powers are jurisdictional rather than absolute: her father rules the Underworld, and his direct spells and decrees can restrain her despite the badge. Divine lineage and flight

As Thanatos's daughter, Erinys is tougher than her small Half-ling body suggests and can manifest four pairs of gray wings. The wings let her fly independently when her ship is unavailable and enable her to rescue Superbia after Surtr destroys the vessel. Divine parentage does not make her invulnerable; William's canceled Godslaying blow still pierces her when she shields Thanatos, and fear or shock can impair her breathing and concentration. A face of Hope

Erinys is one of seven distinct women whose combination manifests Cathy, the Eighth Heavenly Virtue, Hope. Their merged state shares awareness and enables Cathy's interventions, while separation returns all seven individual women. Erinys contributes to that collective identity, but the corpus does not assign her Cathy's complete knowledge or Divinity while she is separate, and Cathy's pregnancy or long-term manifestation would require the seven bodies to remain merged under special conditions.
