David

David is the God of Shepherds, a Neutral-Faction deity who takes an interest in William immediately before the boy's reincarnation. He gives William the indestructible wooden staff that accompanies him throughout his life, advises his growth as a shepherd, and exercises divine jurisdiction over oaths made by beasts of the Herd. David also protects Eve as his High Priestess, forcing Ahriman into a binding compromise and later bringing the power of the Flock into the War of Destruction. (Chapters 6, 74–132, 222–410, 957, 1104, 1252, 1456–1473)

Appearance and personality

David appears as an old man in white robes, carrying a wooden staff and frequently playing with his beard. His brilliant smile and easy jokes conceal the authority of a god capable of making Ahriman negotiate. He is inquisitive, mischievous, and openly fond of William, joining the boy's divine supporters because the unusual soul interests him. His restraint is deliberate rather than timid: he belongs to the Neutral Faction and normally avoids the disputes of Light and Darkness, but becomes ruthless when Eve is harmed, while still accepting an imperfect compromise to protect her sanity. (Chapters 6, 74, 1104)

Biography

The Demon Continent and the Heir of Darkness

David meets William at the Cycle of Reincarnation and offers guidance without adding another Divinity to an already burdened soul. Instead he gives the boy his wooden staff and later watches his trials with Gavin, Lily, and Issei. As William grows, David's patronage becomes practical: beast oaths made to the Guardian of the Herd fall under his jurisdiction, he guides William through trials that unlock the next stage of his Shepherd class, and he discreetly gives Ella information about William's Divinities and the wars developing around him. The relationship is therefore mentorship at a distance rather than constant intervention; David supplies rules, warnings, and occasional divine aid while leaving William to make decisions and clear trials himself. (Chapters 6, 74–132, 222, 304–410)

The limit of that restraint is Eve's safety. When Felix and several Pseudo-Gods ambush her pilgrimage, David descends, defeats the attackers, and threatens to crush Felix unless Ahriman returns his chosen Priestess. Ahriman has already bound Eve with the Necklace of Darkness, making removal dangerous, so David accepts shared priestly authority only after forcing Ahriman to swear by his True Name that he will not harm her. David marks, heals, and clothes Eve as his Priestess, then remains close during later battles because he does not trust Ahriman's methods. In the final war he responds to William's summons, protects Eve directly, blesses her White Goose and ducks into the combined Hydra Goose, and witnesses William release the wooden staff to seek a future worthy wielder after its lifelong mission is complete. (Chapters 957, 1104, 1252, 1456, 1473)

Skills, classes, and divinities

Shepherd authority and oaths

David's divine office encompasses shepherds, flocks, and the Herd. Oaths made to William as Guardian of the Herd by beasts under that jurisdiction become enforceable through David's authority. He can guide the advancement of William's Shepherd class and explain divine trials, but he does not simply clear those trials for his disciple. (Chapters 222, 316)

Descent, blessing, and protection

David can descend into Hestia under limited divine rules, teleport endangered followers away, overwhelm Pseudo-Gods, heal injuries, place a divine mark, and furnish celestial raiment. His blessing can combine Eve's White Goose and ducks into a twelve-headed Hydra Goose capable of immobilizing and killing Giants. These interventions are tied to his divine authority and priestly relationship, not a mortal System job sheet. (Chapters 1104, 1456)

Relationships

  • William: David is one of William's earliest divine mentors. He gives him the wooden staff, oversees aspects of his Shepherd growth, and continues supporting him through the final battle and epilogue. (Chapters 6, 74–132, 222–410, 1456–1473)
  • Eve: David's High Priestess and the follower whose safety draws him into direct confrontation with Ahriman. He protects her, arranges her training as an oracle, and empowers her flock in the final war. (Chapters 1104, 1252, 1456)
  • Ahriman: A divine rival created by Ahriman's seizure of Eve. David forces him to protect their shared Priestess but never trusts the compromise. (Chapters 1104, 1252)
  • Ella: David communicates secretly with Ella through the silver bell and supplies information about William's Divinities, helping her protect and advise him. (Chapters 304, 410, 957)
  • Lily, Issei, and Gavin: Fellow gods who share David's interest in William. They observe his growth, intervene within divine limits, and appear together when the staff's service ends. (Chapters 6, 74, 1322, 1456, 1473)

Items

  • David's Wooden Staff: David gives this divine staff to William before reincarnation. It is indestructible in demonstrated clashes, can reveal the Sword of the Strange Hangings as its true form, and eventually leaves to seek another worthy wielder with David's approval. (Chapters 6, 1184, 1456–1473)
  • Amalthea's Silver Bell: A divine bell associated with David's gifts and communication before William passes it to Ella. Its deeper identity and later protective role belong to Amalthea; David is a prior giver rather than its final owner. (Chapters 304, 957)
  • Celestial Robe: Raiment David places around Eve when marking her as his High Priestess. The text does not establish it as David's continuing equipment. (Chapter 1104)

Mechanics and limitations

  • William's soul cannot safely accept another Divinity at reincarnation, so David gives an artifact and mentorship instead. His patronage does not create a fourth permanent Divinity inside William. (Chapter 6)
  • Divine descent is limited. David warns Ahriman that protecting Eve could consume his last opportunity to descend into Hestia, making intervention a finite resource rather than an always-available rescue. (Chapter 1104)
  • Ahriman's Necklace of Darkness cannot be removed safely by David after it binds Eve. Protecting her requires a True-Name oath and shared priestly authority instead of a clean reversal. (Chapter 1104)
  • David's staff can withstand Surtr's weapon, but it does not erase the wielder's rank disadvantage; Demigod William is still pushed back by the God of Destruction. (Chapter 1184)
  • David can empower the Flock, but Eve chooses whether to enter battle and the combined creatures perform the fighting. The blessing should not be credited as David personally executing every attack. (Chapter 1456)
