Slith

Slith is the leader of the Scatterbugs and the ruler of Notsburg's casino network. His attempt to seize the Cardenez business brings the Howlers into his city, where the werewolf he treats as a subordinate ends his rule.

Biography

Extortion, escalation, and betrayal in Notsburg

Slith presents the Scatterbugs' control of Notsburg as a stable business arrangement: local gangs protect casinos in exchange for a share. He demands eighty percent of Harry Cardenez's proposed venture, then counters Harry's refusal by demanding half of the entire Cardenez company. When intimidation fails, he orders escalating attacks through subordinate gangs, destroying factories and contracts even after Harry offers to concede. His goal shifts from profit to making an example of a businessman who resisted him, prompting the Howlers and their allies to assault the casino. (Chapters 490–512)

Slith waits behind ten other Altereds and offers Gary Dem the same bargain he once gave Midwak: submit and join him. Midwak instead slashes Slith's throat without warning, revealing that his apparent right-hand man had remained only to pursue a werewolf conflict of his own. Midwak confirms Slith is dead and consumes much of his body for strength. Slith's rings become proof of his death, while Harry arranges the transfer of businesses registered in Slith's name, ending his personal control of Notsburg. (Chapters 544, 552–554, 570)

Appearance and personality

Slith dresses ostentatiously and displays multiple large rings while ruling from a jewel-filled casino office. He is theatrical, greedy, and vindictive: he smiles through negotiations, but would rather destroy the Cardenez company than accept submission once his authority has been challenged. He treats his own casualties as reduced wage costs, showing how little loyalty exists beneath his claims of partnership. (Chapters 490, 512, 552)

Powers and abilities

Gary's System counts Slith among the eleven Altereds in the casino room, confirming that he possesses an Altered transformation. The corpus never shows him activate it or identifies its beast, serum origin, mechanics, or special effects; Midwak kills him before he can fight. Slith's demonstrated strengths are instead organizational—command of Notsburg's casinos, subordinate gangs, trained staff, and ten other Altereds. Those defenses make the casino dangerous, but fail against betrayal from the strongest person beside him. (Chapters 544, 552–554)

Relationships

• Midwak: Slith regards Midwak as his strongest ally, not realizing that the werewolf is using the Scatterbugs until the moment of betrayal.
• Harry: Slith tries to extort Harry's venture and then destroy the Cardenez company when Harry refuses.
