Galdark

Galdark, also spelled Galark and Garlark, is the hereditary Bookkeeper who serves Lupus and preserves the laws and history of the werewolves. He advises the same family across two generations, later transfers to the Howlers so that his knowledge can guide the reunited pack, and finally sacrifices himself in an attempt to save Lupus from Unzoku.

The historical Redwing Pack sequence also contains a powerful fighter named Galdark. The corpus does not establish that this ancient man and the modern elderly Bookkeeper are the same physical person. Because the modern Bookkeeper explicitly carries memories inherited from predecessors, this article does not assign the Redwing fighter's combat feats to him. (Chapters 1518, 1615–1713)

Biography

Adviser to Lupus and Dean

Galdark serves under Lupus and Dean's father before becoming Lupus's right-hand adviser. He teaches both brothers werewolf history, rituals, Alpha bites, and pack law. His loyalty to the sitting Alpha can become severe: when Dean resists using captured enemies as full-moon prey and fights Lupus, Galdark transforms his hand and attempts to kill Dean for attacking the Alpha. Lupus stops him and protects his brother, but Dean's subsequent departure leaves Galdark as the adviser who reinforces Lupus's confidence and helps govern Ruin City. (Chapters 944–955, 1815)

Bookkeeper of a reunited pack

After the Lupus Pack loses its war, Galdark enters the Howlers' meeting under the Bookkeeper's rule of neutrality. He explains that his office is meant to outlast Alphas, that a secret apprentice will inherit it, and that Bookkeepers preserve predecessors' memories as well as written records. To remove doubt about his testimony, he asks Xin Clove to transfer him into the Howlers. He then advises the survivors on the limits of their True forms, the division of spoils, and the medallion once forged to keep two Alphas from fighting. His knowledge establishes possibilities, not omniscience: when asked where the missing Alphas went, he admits that he does not know. (Chapters 1517–1522)

Final service in Ruin City

Galdark later returns to the ruined pack settlement and remains in contact with the Howlers while Lupus prepares for Unzoku. He is supposed to stay in the underground shelter during their battle, but monitors show Lupus being overwhelmed. Knowing reinforcements cannot arrive in time, Galdark steps into the open and falsely claims that Gary is approaching. He hopes either to frighten Unzoku or give Lupus a chance to flee. Unzoku crushes his head, and the loss awakens Lupus's Leviathan power. Lupus retrieves the body, orders a proper burial, and directs the hidden apprentice to assume the Bookkeeper's duties, making Galdark's last act both personal loyalty and protection of the pack's future. Appearance and personality

In later life Galdark is grey-haired and elderly, wears a brown suit, and walks with a stick. He is already older than Lupus and Dean in the earlier flashback and becomes the oldest serving werewolf associated with their Alphas. His calm presence can settle an agitated room; observers compare its effect to a Luna's aura, although the corpus never identifies him as a Luna or explains the mechanism. (Chapters 944, 1166, 1518)

Galdark is measured, knowledgeable, and normally rational. His counsel tends to protect pack continuity rather than individual comfort, which helps explain both his harsh response to Dean and his insistence that the Bookkeeper remain neutral between Alphas. His final decision is deliberately irrational by his own usual standards: he abandons safety for a small chance of saving the man he taught and advised for most of his life.

Powers and abilities

Werewolf physiology

Galdark has werewolf strength and partial transformation. He demonstrates the ability to change one hand and lengthen its nails into killing claws, but Lupus stops that attack before it lands. The Bookkeeper is normally protected rather than deployed as a fighter, and the modern Galdark has no source-grounded full-form combat record or stated class. His body is therefore supernatural, but his principal value is institutional knowledge rather than battlefield power. (Chapters 945, 955)

Bookkeeper memory and pack knowledge

The Bookkeeper carries ritual law, history, and the memories of predecessors, trains a secret apprentice, and advises new Alphas. Galdark can identify Altered Hunter scents, explain pack transfer and True-form exhaustion, and reconstruct the intended purpose of the divided medallion. These memories are inherited expertise, not demonstrated prophecy: gaps remain, and he openly distinguishes what he knows from what he can only infer. His knowledge survives him through the apprentice prepared to take over after his death. (Chapters 955, 1166, 1518–1522, 1818)

Calming presence

When Galdark enters the postwar Howlers meeting, an aura around him eases the werewolves' aggression and helps them sit back down. It resembles the emotional calm associated with a Luna but is not named, activated, measured, or used in combat. Whether it comes from the Bookkeeper office, age, pack energy, or another trait remains unknown. (Chapter 1518)

Relationships

Lupus

Galdark is Lupus's teacher, right-hand adviser, and stabilizing elder. He supports Lupus after Dean's departure and helps him carry the responsibilities of leadership. That long service explains why Galdark risks certain death for even a slight chance of saving him, and why the loss triggers Lupus's deepest transformation.

Dean

Galdark teaches Dean the same history he teaches Lupus, but his allegiance to the reigning Alpha overrides that bond during the brothers' quarrel. His attempt to kill Dean marks the danger of interpreting pack law without Lupus's remaining family loyalty.

Xin Clove and the Howlers

Galdark voluntarily joins the Howlers through Xin's Luna authority so that the victors can trust his words. He becomes a source of continuity between enemy packs, giving the new leadership access to traditions neither side could safely discard after the war.

Items

Galdark keeps the Bookkeeper's inherited book and uses a walking stick in old age. Neither is configured as a finalized notable item in the supplied inventory.
