Daphne Bree
Daphne Bree is the current head of the Bree Family, a generations-old organization described as the largest gang in the world. Unlike most leaders called Kings, she is not an Altered. Her position rests on the Bree Family's international organization, her own judgment, and a secret touch-based art that can influence animals and the transformed states of Altereds. Although she inherits an office built to preserve her family's power, she does not share Harvor's desire to dominate for its own sake. She intervenes when his rule threatens the balance among the Kings and stakes her family's forces on an alliance with Gary Dem.
Daphne's support is always both political and personal. She exploits Harvor's exposed conflict to seize territory, but also enters the arena herself, trains Gary through a dangerous forced transformation, and returns to the decisive battle when her intervention can keep him alive. Later, when Glutton werewolves begin killing civilians and hunting Altereds, she again moves beyond administration to investigate in person. The disastrous first operation costs members of her group and exposes the limits of her control, after which she adapts by deploying larger, mutually supporting teams rather than abandoning the hunt.
Biography
An inherited office in a changing balance of power
Daphne first appears as Harvor's guest at Jayden Tiger's AFC challenge. She is already the head of a family that has endured for generations and extended its underworld control beyond its home country. That scale keeps her abroad much of the time and makes her authority different from the territorial rule of most local Kings. Harvor invites her to the match, but she accepts chiefly because she expects Gary—the new King whose rise has disturbed a long-stable balance—to attend. Her interest is strategic curiosity rather than loyalty to the host. She privately calls Harvor an obstacle who has prevented her from taking the entire country and waits to see whether Jayden's challenge will change the political field. (Chapter 995)
That ambition is bounded by obligation. Daphne later tells Gary that she does not occupy the position because she wants power and control; the Bree Family's long-standing global influence imposes a duty to preserve what previous generations built. She is willing to take cities and revenue when doing so strengthens the family, but frames coexistence in practical terms: if Gary does not interfere with her interests, she will not interfere with his. The distinction does not make her disinterested or harmless. It explains why she can pursue expansion without sharing Harvor's belief that individual strength entitles him to rule everyone around him. (Chapter 1033)
Choosing Gary's side against Harvor
Daphne watches the Jayden crisis closely before declaring herself. A false fire alarm does not move her because her lion, Coco, shows no sign of danger, and she later observes a disguised Gary intervene against Harvor's people without initially recognizing him. What attracts her is the willingness to challenge someone whom established powers avoid. When the One Gang's Zodiacs surround Gary, Xin Clove, Jayden, and their allies inside the Bloodspire cage, Daphne walks into the arena with only two Bree men and states that the sides are uneven. She then declares the Bree Family at war with the One Gang, promising to attack its business in Bree-controlled cities and cut its funding. She openly calls the timing opportunistic, but places herself on Gary's side before knowing that the group will escape alive. (Chapters 1006–1015)
Her first direct contribution reveals why even elite Altereds hesitate to approach her. Using beast-weapon boots to close the distance, she touches the transformed Zodiac Roy, empties the awareness from his expression, and turns him against another Zodiac. Harvor and Stanley counter by ordering their fighters to remain human: Daphne's control is most effective on animals and transformed Altereds, and it ends if the controlled Altered is knocked unconscious and reverts. Daphne acknowledges that Harvor, extraordinarily strong even without transforming, is her worst possible opponent. Rather than pretend she can neutralize him herself, she gambles that Gary can become the fighter who does. (Chapters 1016–1017)
The escape makes that wager consequential. Daphne leaves with Gary's group while Harvor pursues them in full dragon form, and recognizes Jayden's transformation as the mythical White Tiger opposed to dragons in old stories. After Jayden remains behind and is lost, she sees Kai stop Xin from turning grief into a suicidal return. Kai's ability to restrain the group without abandoning Gary convinces her that the young King has unusually strong people beside him. She asks to visit Slough rather than treating the temporary arena coalition as finished, moving from a single intervention toward an alliance with the organization she has just helped save. (Chapters 1026–1029)
Training a rival King and dismantling the One Gang
Gary wakes furious that he was too weak to protect Jayden, and Daphne answers with a political bargain rather than sympathy alone. She and Kai propose splitting Harvor's attention: the Bree Family will attack Inferno City and the One Gang's smaller holdings, while Gary challenges Harvor directly. Daphne receives Inferno City; the Howlers receive the other principal gains. The plan gives her family territory, but it also converts separate enemies into complementary forces. She can break Harvor's finances and draw away his fighters, while Gary can confront the one opponent her own power is least suited to control. Daphne tells Gary that she has bet on him and urges him to listen to the friends capable of carrying parts of the burden. (Chapters 1032–1033, 1059–1062)
Her promised training is not conventional combat instruction. Daphne discloses that she has no Altered form and that the ability seen in the arena belongs to a hidden Bree Family tradition. With Gary's consent, she touches his chest and tries to draw out what lies within his transformation. Gary is not an Altered, so neither knows whether the technique will work; he must voluntarily stop resisting and allow her into part of him. The attempt leaves Daphne sweating and nearly fainting, but forcefully unlocks Gary's Shadow Ash Lycan state for roughly half an hour. Its heat devastates the surrounding woodland, and its power convinces her that Gary has a chance against Harvor. The result is a shortcut rather than a gift she creates: Daphne exposes a form latent in Gary, after which repeated painful sessions teach him how to function while it burns through his body. (Chapters 1036–1037, 1119–1120)
Daphne remains beside Gary through the public build-up to the rematch, using her presence to deter an early move by Harvor while her family prepares its hidden offensive. When the battle begins, Stanley keeps her away from the cage with ranged ice attacks and prevents transformed One Gang fighters from coming within reach. Daphne cannot overpower him directly, but adapts after Gary's father Dean intervenes: she circles into the stands, touches One Gang Altereds, and builds a group of roughly fifteen controlled fighters. She sends them against Stanley, returns to the fight rather than abandoning Dean, and helps create the opening in which Dean wounds the One Gang strategist. Her use of the controlled fighters and her own kicks depletes energy she still needs for Gary, showing that the same power cannot be applied without cumulative cost. (Chapters 1109–1114)
Harvor's full dragon blast leaves no safer option. Daphne reaches Gary, places a hand against his back, and spends the rest of her energy forcing the Shadow Ash Lycan form open again. The transformation supplies the force Gary needs to contest Harvor, though Daphne does not control the ensuing fight or remove the form's damage to Gary. After Harvor's final defeat, she tells the Howlers to return to Slough before authorities and reporters arrive and assumes responsibility for the One Gang's remaining interests. She keeps Inferno City as agreed and transfers the other holdings to the Howlers. By the subsequent celebration, the bargain has become a working peace between Kings rather than a temporary ceasefire. (Chapters 1118–1139)
The Glutton outbreak and a harder form of responsibility
Much later, reports from a Bree-controlled city show dozens of civilian deaths and the disappearance of an Altered team Daphne sent to investigate. The killings offer no sensible territorial or financial benefit, so she doubts the Howlers are responsible despite the wolf-like evidence. Because the combination of casualties, missing operatives, and unexplained behavior does not fit an ordinary gang attack, she goes to the suspected building herself with Yin, Koppo, Brit, and a tracking dog. They find a mound of partially eaten bodies and several feral werewolves hiding among them. The decision to investigate personally reflects both confidence and responsibility for her people, but also underestimates a threat outside her established information network. (Chapters 1741–1742)
Daphne forcefully transforms Koppo and Brit and draws more power from their Altered states so the group can fight. The Gluttons nevertheless regenerate from severe injuries, coordinate around isolated targets, and overwhelm the smaller Bree team. Daphne uses her speed and boots to save Koppo, then follows Yin's judgment that they must retreat to preserve as many survivors as possible. Koppo and Brit are lost, and Daphne reproaches herself for not bringing a larger force or treating the report more cautiously. Unknown fighters led by Jin save her and Yin, but their ability to operate inside a Bree city without her knowledge is another warning that inherited reach does not make her organization omniscient. (Chapters 1742–1745)
Jin's group captures one of the creatures and asks Daphne to use her control to question it. She cooperates partly in return for being saved and partly because the Gluttons threaten the same cities both groups are trying to protect. Her technique forces the werewolf back into human form, but encounters active resistance unlike any ordinary Altered's will. She can only suppress the corruption while maintaining her grip; the man remains consumed by hunger, gives no useful answer, and transforms again the instant contact breaks. Daphne therefore cannot cure, permanently command, or interrogate a Glutton with the power she has demonstrated. She does, however, distinguish the corruption from Gary's controlled nature and warns Jin against blaming the Howlers. Her evidence contributes to the later conclusion that Gary's pack is not responsible for the killings. (Chapters 1746–1747, 1759)
Daphne responds to the failed mission by changing deployment rather than repeating it. She expands the hunt, follows leads relentlessly, and orders Altereds to move in defensive groups of ten after learning that the Gluttons specifically target them. At her last appearance, a Bree force is fighting a pack at a roadside diner when every Glutton abruptly abandons battle and runs toward Unzoku's position. Daphne remains alive and in command, now using the scale of the family she inherited to contain a national supernatural crisis. The corpus does not show her in the final confrontation or establish a postwar office for her beyond that continuing leadership. (Chapter 1820)
Appearance and personality
Daphne is introduced with shoulder-length dark-blue hair, a long, stern face, black stockings that reach her thighs, and high heels. She later wears a slim blue dress at the Howlers' celebration. Her usual composed presentation and confident pace fit the head of an international organization, although relaxed scenes show a less formal appetite and humor. She is often accompanied by Coco, a large lion whose mane she strokes while observing the AFC event. (Chapters 995, 1014–1015, 1140–1141)
Her combat footwear is visually heavier and more intricate than ordinary boots. A ring around the ankle lights when she strikes the side to activate their speed, and the reinforced construction lets her skid, accelerate, and deliver kicks against transformed opponents. The boots do not make her an Altered and should not be confused with the source of her control technique. (Chapters 1016, 1109–1110, 1742–1744)
Daphne is decisive, politically observant, and willing to profit from a crisis without pretending otherwise. She studies changes in the balance among Kings, makes bargains with explicit divisions of territory, and treats wealth, information, and personnel as forms of power equal to individual combat. Her confidence can become underestimation, as the first Glutton mission demonstrates, but she is capable of accepting a subordinate's survival judgment and revising her deployments after losses.
Her family duty coexists with considerable independence. Daphne says she makes her own decisions and does not want rule for its own sake, yet accepts responsibility for preserving the Bree legacy. She can be calculating toward rivals while remaining loyal to people who have helped her: she returns for Dean instead of using him only as a distraction, keeps her bargain with the Howlers, seeks the bodies of missing subordinates, and defends Gary's group when a stronger unknown organization suspects them. These choices make her an ally whose self-interest is visible but not exhaustive.
Powers and abilities
Daphne is explicitly not an Altered. Her supernatural capability belongs to a hidden Bree Family discipline, while her mobility and striking power are supplemented by beast-weapon boots. The corpus does not name the discipline, state when Daphne learned it, or establish whether her own aptitude was inherited biologically. Daphne says that many concealed powers can be taught rather than passed on and calls hers part of her family's power; a more specific origin would be conjecture. (Chapter 1036)
Transformation influence and control
Daphne initiates demonstrated control through direct physical contact, usually placing a hand on a target's head, back, or chest. Animals and transformed Altereds are the easiest subjects because, in her explanation, lower intelligence or the reduced will associated with transformation offers less resistance. Once she touches a susceptible transformed Altered, its eyes lose focus and it obeys her directions even after the initial hand placement ends. She can turn an opponent against allies and can maintain multiple controlled Altereds at once, reaching roughly fifteen during the battle with Stanley. The corpus does not provide an exact maximum range, target count, or duration. (Chapters 1016–1017, 1037, 1114)
Control is not absolute mind domination. Stronger will makes entry harder, and Daphne believes she could not reliably control Harvor or an unwilling Gary. Keeping a target human is an effective counter because ordinary human-form Altereds do not present the same vulnerable transformed state; knocking out a controlled Altered and allowing it to revert also breaks her hold. An enemy can deny activation by staying at range, evading her hand, or preventing accessible Altereds from approaching. Daphne's fight with Stanley demonstrates all three limits: his ice keeps her away, his knowledge keeps other Altereds out of reach, and her equipment cannot close the gap decisively against his transformed speed. (Chapters 1017, 1037, 1109–1110)
Her art can alter transformation itself rather than merely issue commands. Daphne can force an Altered to revert to human, force full transformation, help someone who cannot reach a complete form, and draw out more of an Altered's available power. Clients pay the Bree Family for this service. When she touches Koppo and Brit, both transform in under a second and become more powerful than they would through their own activation. The precise increase varies by target and is never quantified, and the source does not establish whether Daphne can permanently improve a conventional Altered after contact ends. (Chapters 1037, 1742)
Gary is an exceptional interaction because he is a werewolf rather than an Altered. Daphne requires his informed cooperation and tells him he should be able to break free if he resists. With permission, her power reaches a latent state and forcefully activates it, but does not teach her how Gary's System, Phoenix-derived fire, or werewolf biology produces the Shadow Ash Lycan form. During the first trial she loses control after about half an hour and nearly faints; the surrounding forest is burned by Gary, not by an elemental attack of Daphne's. Repeated training helps Gary endure and use the form, while its pain, Health drain, and combat techniques remain his burdens rather than effects Daphne removes. (Chapters 1036–1037, 1119–1120)
The technique consumes Daphne's own energy and produces visible exertion: arm veins rise, sweat forms, her body strains, and heavy use can leave her kneeling or nearly unconscious. The decisive activation during Harvor's battle drains everything she has left after controlling numerous Altereds and helping Dean. This is a resource cost rather than a stated fixed cooldown. The first half-hour loss of control should likewise be treated as the observed limit of that high-resistance attempt, not a universal timer for every subject. (Chapters 1037, 1114, 1118–1119)
Glutton corruption supplies the strongest observed counter. Daphne can force a restrained Glutton from werewolf to human, but feels an outside, infection-like force continually fighting her. Maintaining contact only suppresses it; the subject remains irrationally hungry, cannot be compelled to answer, and reverts immediately when her grip slips. Her experience lets her withstand resistance that she believes less trained Bree practitioners could not, yet even she cannot make the effect permanent. At her latest appearance, no further progression or cure has been demonstrated. (Chapters 1746–1747, 1820)
Combat skill and beast-weapon boots
Daphne is an experienced close-range fighter who relies heavily on kicks. She ducks an ambush, keeps her balance during accelerated movement, breaks ice projectiles with her legs, uses scenery to create openings, and times strikes while controlled Altereds occupy stronger opponents. She is powerful enough to launch a Glutton into a wall and stagger Stanley when an opening appears, but the text explicitly places her below the individually strongest Kings. Her leadership position is inherited, and much of its force comes from the Bree Family rather than from an Altered body of her own. (Chapters 1109–1114, 1742–1744)
Her heavy beast-weapon boots activate when she strikes their sides, causing an ankle ring to light and sharply increasing her speed. They support rapid charges, evasive runs, hard landings, and reinforced kicks. Their beast tier, crystal, full list of skills, energy capacity, and acquisition history are not provided. Stanley can track and block their boosted attacks, proving that they improve Daphne's mobility without erasing the difference between a human body and an elite transformed Altered. (Chapters 1016, 1109–1110)
Leadership, intelligence, and organizational reach
The Bree Family gives Daphne forces, businesses, contacts, information networks, and holdings across several countries. She can declare economic war, attack many One Gang locations while personally operating elsewhere, absorb or transfer captured holdings, and organize national searches. This reach is not a supernatural power, but it is the principal reason she remains a King despite lacking an Altered form and is essential to how she applies her personal ability: the family supplies the Altereds she can enhance and the teams she can deploy. (Chapters 995, 1015, 1033, 1060, 1110, 1137–1140)
Her planning is strongest when combined with other specialists. Kai designs the division of targets that lets her attack Inferno City without leaving Gary unsupported, while Daphne supplies the forces and accepts the territorial bargain. Her first Glutton mission shows the limit of relying on reputation and local intelligence against an unknown supernatural network. She responds by increasing team size and concentrating vulnerable Altereds, showing adaptation rather than a new supernatural stage. (Chapters 1033, 1059–1062, 1741–1747, 1820)
Relationships
Gary Dem
Daphne initially studies Gary as the new King capable of disturbing Harvor's balance. She chooses him as the better strategic bet, but that wager develops into active investment: she enters the cage on his side, negotiates a territorial alliance, reveals a closely guarded family art, and repeatedly endures exhaustion to unlock his strongest form. She does not submit the Bree Family to him and explicitly reserves her own interests, yet keeps the agreement after victory and later defends the Howlers from suspicion because her direct experience tells her the Gluttons are different. Gary moves from an interesting rival to a trusted allied King. (Chapters 995, 1014–1017, 1032–1037, 1118–1139, 1747–1759)
Harvor
Harvor is Daphne's principal political obstacle and the individual counter to her personal technique. His untransformed strength, national holdings, and One Gang finances prevent her from expanding freely, while his dragon power makes a direct contest exceptionally dangerous. Daphne therefore attacks the structure around him: she cuts funding, takes territory, controls his transformed subordinates, and helps Gary reach a form capable of fighting him. Her victory over Harvor is collective and strategic rather than a claim that she can defeat him alone. (Chapters 995, 1015–1017, 1033, 1060, 1109–1139)
Kai
Kai is the Howler Daphne most readily treats as a planning counterpart. They negotiate while Gary is unconscious, divide One Gang territory and pressure, and coordinate the timing by which her offensive will create an opening for Gary. Daphne notices that Kai can make difficult decisions for the group and encourages Gary to listen to him. Kai, in turn, gives the alliance his approval and later treats Bree neutrality as a major safeguard against attacks from another King. Their relationship is based on complementary judgment rather than affection or subordination. (Chapters 1029, 1032–1033, 1059–1062, 1137, 1206)
The Bree Family
Daphne describes leadership of the Bree Family as an inherited duty to preserve generations of global influence. Its members provide the strength that makes her a King and learn versions of the same concealed art, while she makes territorial and operational decisions for the whole organization. Her handling of the Glutton mission shows the personal side of that responsibility: she regrets under-deploying, refuses to forget missing subordinates, and changes formations after Altereds become targets. The family is therefore both the source of her authority and the constituency whose survival constrains how she uses it. (Chapters 995, 1033, 1110, 1741–1747, 1820)
Jayden Tiger
Jayden's challenge is the event through which Daphne enters the Howlers' conflict with Harvor. She recognizes his White Tiger as a mythical counterpart to Harvor's dragon and helps the group escape the arena, but cannot prevent his final sacrifice. His death intensifies Gary's need for power and turns Daphne's political wager into the training partnership that unlocks the Shadow Ash form. Their relationship is brief, yet Jayden's battle supplies both the opening and the cost around which her alliance forms. (Chapters 995, 1014–1028, 1032–1037)
Items
Daphne uses a pair of heavy beast-weapon boots that enhance speed and reinforce her kicking style. Their origin, beast tier, crystal type, and full capabilities are not stated, and no standalone inventory article is configured for them. (Chapters 1016, 1109–1110, 1742–1744)
