Ovin

Ovin, formally Ovinnik, is the black-cat Familiar King who contracts first with Leo and later with Erin and Peter. Proud and sharp-tongued, he masks a genuine concern for the Familiar World's survival while lending successive hosts his fear-inducing voice, strength, and yellow flames. (Chapters 906–1081, 1451–1482, 2342–2359, and 2490–2533)

Biography

Contracting with Leo

Ovinnik introduces himself in the Familiar World and stresses that a contractor must retain a strong desire. Under the shortened name Ovin, he later accompanies Leo into the Human World, choosing to act because he did not form a contract merely to sleep. He disguises himself as a low-tier beast for a tournament, where a single paw strike defeats an advanced-tier creature and draws attention to Leo despite their intended secrecy. (Chapters 906 and 1073–1077)

Remaining manifested through repeated matches exhausts Ovin, forcing Leo to finish a later contest himself. When a four-spike Dalki attacks, Ovin uses a fear-inducing bark to create an opening, then turns into intense yellow fire around the Dalki's arm to save Leo from a lethal blow. The sacrifice removes Ovin temporarily rather than killing him permanently because a contracted familiar can reform. (Chapters 1077–1081)

Defending the Familiar World

Ovin returns during the familiar crisis and helps Quinn's group understand the kings and their world. He translates other familiars, explains that dead familiars dissolve into energy that restores the land, and challenges Genbu over the destruction caused by the turtle king's territory. Although Ovin left the world through a contract, his anger at wasted energy shows that he remains invested in its survival. (Chapters 1451 and 1466–1476)

He joins the effort to negotiate among the four kings and supports the eventual passage back to the Human World. Later evidence establishes that, after Leo's death, Ovin and the other kings contract with Erin under pressure created by the Familiar World's energy crisis and Immortui's plans. The corpus does not show the exact moment Ovin's individual contract transfers from Leo. (Chapters 1476–1482 and 2342–2344)

The mistaken contract with Peter

When Peter enters the dying Familiar World disguised as Quinn, Ovin explains that contracts provide the energy the realm needs to survive. The four kings believe they are renewing their alliance with Quinn and enter Peter's body together. After the Boneclaw reveals the mistake, Ovin threatens Peter but accepts the contract once Muka explains Peter's loyalty and the need to help Quinn against Immortui. (Chapters 2343–2345)

Ovin then advises Peter's infiltration of the Red Space, burns through Luce's white defence, and helps coordinate information about the Familiar World. In the final battle he rides another familiar while firing repeated fireballs at demons. He is alive at this latest appearance, though the corpus does not resolve the Familiar World's long-term energy crisis. (Chapters 2359, 2490–2501, and 2533)

Appearance and personality

Ovin normally appears as a fat black cat with fierce yellow eyes. Yellow mist surrounds him when he invokes his intimidating power, and he habitually sits on Leo's bald head or on another familiar. The harmless-looking body causes outsiders to mistake him for a basic-tier beast. (Chapters 1073–1077 and 2343)

He is vain, lazy, observant, and fond of showing off, yet he is also brave when his contractor or world is threatened. Ovin complains about stronger familiars wasting energy, confronts Genbu despite the turtle's size, and sacrifices a manifestation to protect Leo. His impatience makes him jump to conclusions about Peter, but he can reconsider after receiving evidence. (Chapters 1073–1081, 1475–1476, and 2345)

Powers and abilities

Familiar strength and intimidation

Ovin's small body contains enough force to smash an advanced-tier beast's head into an arena with one paw. His bark produces visible sound waves and a supernatural fear response that can interrupt a beast tamer's control and briefly stun a four-spike Dalki. Stronger opponents can resist or overpower it: the Dalki's roar exceeds Ovin's and shrinks his surrounding mist. (Chapters 1076 and 1081)

Yellow flames

Ovin can turn his manifestation into intense yellow flames, rapidly dissolving a Dalki's arm and forcing it to amputate the limb. In later combat he projects the fire in volleys; it burns Luce's white coating despite that defence's resistance to ordinary attacks. The corpus does not state the flames' temperature, fuel, range, or whether the sacrificial full-body use always forces a long recovery. (Chapter 1081; Chapters 2490, 2501, and 2533)

Familiar contracts and communication

As a Familiar King, Ovin can communicate mentally with a contractor, speak aloud to others, interpret less verbal familiars, change between energy and physical manifestations, and enter a host as a contract mark. Remaining outside too long drains his current manifestation, while destruction causes reformation rather than permanent death as long as the contract persists. (Chapters 1073–1081, 1466–1482, and 2345)

Contracts also feed life energy into the Familiar World. Ovin explains that the kings depend on those connections and that killing a host to break a mistaken contract could leave them reforming too slowly to save their realm. This dependency limits their freedom to change partners and motivates their bargains with Erin and Peter. (Chapters 2343–2345)

Relationships

  • Leo: Leo is Ovin's first documented contractor and trusted partner. Ovin helps conceal his identity, fights beside him, and sacrifices a manifestation to save him.
  • Peter: Ovin contracts with Peter by mistake, then accepts him as a powerful host whose loyalty to Quinn aligns with the kings' mission.
  • Genbu: Genbu is Ovin's fellow Familiar King and frequent argument partner. Their dispute concerns unequal energy between territories, but they ultimately act together.
  • Erin: Ovin joins the kings' contract with Erin during the Familiar World's crisis; the exact boundaries of their individual bond are only explained retrospectively.
  • Boneclaw: Ovin can interpret the Boneclaw's grunts and relies on its portals between worlds.

Items

No manifest-configured inventory item is assigned to Ovin. His contract markings and yellow fire are parts of familiar magic rather than equipment.
