Genbu

Genbu is the purple turtle among the Four Familiar Kings, renowned for a shell that renews stronger after each shedding. He contracts with Owen, protects Erin after Owen's death, and later becomes one of four kings mistakenly bound to Peter during the Familiar World's energy crisis. Biography

Testing Owen in the Familiar World

Genbu rules a poor-energy region of the Familiar World and accuses Ovin and the other kings of abandoning it. He claims his territory's familiars are attacked when they seek energy elsewhere, while he contributes his own power to sustain the land. Because his dependants need a reliable connection to another world, he refuses to form a contract on another king's recommendation alone. (Chapters 1475–1476)

He instead tests potential contractors by letting them strike his shell. Owen's Qi-infused blow damages it enough to produce the response Genbu seeks without destroying it, and Genbu chooses him. The contract gives the turtle access to the Human World and gives Owen a defender suited to the Graylash leader's responsibility for others. (Chapters 1477–1482)

Defending Owen and Erin

Owen summons Genbu against the Dalki, where the turtle blocks attacks and changes size to cover the battlefield. Genbu later stands against Graham, though even his shell cannot turn that opponent into an easy fight. His service becomes celebrated on Graylash worlds, where statues commemorate the familiar that helped Owen unite humans and vampires. (Chapters 1524–1525, 1561, and 1916; Chapter 2343)

After Owen's death, Genbu becomes attached to Erin with the other Familiar Kings. He shields her from Laxmus and Zero, shrinking to remain on her shoulder when not intercepting attacks. A thousand years after Quinn first damaged his shell, Genbu confidently blocks another projectile because successive shells have grown stronger. His defence can nevertheless be broken by overwhelming power such as Laxmus's mountain-level blows. (Chapters 1788, 1964, and 1972)

Contracting with Peter

The kings later bring Peter and Muka into the failing Familiar World and explain that contracts supply its dwindling energy. Mistaking Peter's Quinn disguise for Quinn himself, all four bind themselves to him. Genbu is the first to argue that the result may still be useful: Peter can contain all four, is demonstrably strong, and has been trusted with Quinn's duties. (Chapters 2343–2345)

Genbu subsequently blocks Luce for Peter's group, but warns that expending the manifestation will prevent immediate resummoning. In the final battles he enlarges himself and crushes demons. He remains alive at the last appearance, while the promised permanent solution to the Familiar World's energy shortage remains unresolved. (Chapters 2490 and 2533)

Appearance and personality

Genbu is a purple turtle who can shrink small enough to sit in a palm or on a shoulder and grow into a massive battlefield form. His shell is his defining feature and is described as nearly impenetrable. The corpus gives no eye colour, natural maximum size, or stable markings beyond the purple colour. He is proud, territorial, and protective of the familiars who depend on him. Genbu initially treats the other kings as deserters and insists on testing a contractor himself, but he responds enthusiastically to genuine strength. He can also be pragmatic, accepting Peter after the mistaken contract rather than risking a long reformation while his world dies. (Chapters 1475–1482 and 2345)

Shell defence and renewal

Genbu's shell withstands powerful physical, Dalki, projectile, and energy attacks, making him one of the Familiar World's foremost defenders. Owen's concentrated Qi can damage the shell, and Graham and Laxmus can force or break through its protection, so “impenetrable” describes reputation rather than absolute immunity. Each time Genbu sheds and grows a new shell, the replacement becomes stronger. A millennium of renewal makes his later shell more resistant than the one Quinn once cracked. The corpus does not state how often he can shed, whether damage triggers it, or how long replacement takes. (Chapter 1972)

Size changing and impact

Genbu can move between palm-sized, human-sized, and giant forms. Small forms let him travel with a host and intercept precise attacks; large forms create broad cover or let him crush multiple demons by mass and impact. Familiar contract

Genbu can become energy, enter a contractor, and manifest from a mark. Contracts feed energy across worlds but bind him to the host; after mistakenly entering Peter, killing the host might require a reformation too slow to save the Familiar World. Heavy use also imposes a cooldown, since Genbu tells Peter it will be some time before he can summon the expended kings again. (Chapters 1482, 2343–2345, and 2490)

Relationships

• Owen: Owen passes Genbu's shell test and becomes his principal documented contractor, later honouring the familiar through Graylash history.
• Ovin: Ovin is Genbu's fellow king and critic. They argue about territorial energy but ultimately coordinate contracts and battles.
• Erin: Genbu protects Erin after Owen's death, using both giant barriers and a shoulder-sized form.
• Peter: Genbu contracts with Peter by mistake, then accepts his strength and loyalty to Quinn as reasons to maintain the bond.
• Quinn: Quinn damages an earlier shell and leaves Genbu with lasting respect for his strength; Genbu later supports Peter's effort to aid him.
