Lucy

Lucy is a founder of Pure, its Agent Five, and the mother of Layla. Her anger at an ability-based social order helps create a movement intended to remove inherited power hierarchies, but Zero gradually uses that idealism for aims Lucy does not share. Lucy's rare control over life-force Qi makes her a dangerous swordswoman who can stop supernatural healing, and ultimately lets her exchange her own life for Layla's after their estrangement ends in the New Era duel. (Chapters 739–759, 1442, and 1847–1877)

Biography

Founding Pure and losing influence

The later account of Pure's origin says that a stronger ability user assaulted Lucy and left her pregnant. Her anger at the systems protecting powerful ability users draws Zero to her, and Lucy, Zero, and Chris found Pure around the goal of removing those hierarchies. Zero teaches her Qi; she develops rapidly and displays a capacity to manipulate life-force Qi that even he lacks. (Chapter 1847)

Lucy imagines a world without leaders and attracts followers through conviction rather than rank alone. Zero later describes her drive as something he could use to recruit similarly idealistic people. As Zero brings in members whose views conflict with Lucy's, internal struggles weaken her position within the organisation she helped create. She remains respected as a founder and high-ranking agent even though other single-digit agents surpass her in raw strength. (Chapters 739, 952, 1158, 1442, and 1847)

The Pure campaign and public duel

Lucy leads Pure's campaign in the Dome shelter, publicly arguing that inherited abilities let powerful factions escape accountability. Her speeches win over civilians, but her commitment is uncompromising: she intends to remove ability users and treats Layla primarily as an agent rather than a daughter. Even so, she rebukes a subordinate for abusing rank and comforts the amnesiac Cia, showing that the equality she preaches is not entirely performative. (Chapter 739)

Ordered by Zero to represent Pure in the New Era contest, Lucy uses the event to reveal Qi publicly as a power any human can learn. She incapacitates a team without touching them, defeats Helen through internal attacks that bypass armour, and explains that Pure plans to distribute Qi gradually while punishing its abuse. Her actions advertise an alternative to inherited abilities, but the method also exposes the movement's coercion: she leaves wounds that healers cannot close and later severs Peter's arm after concluding that his regenerative body has been unnaturally altered. Choosing Layla over the cause

Quinn enters the final match intending to learn how to reverse Lucy's effect on Peter. Lucy's Qi cuts through his shadow and prevents his vampire healing, but Quinn's greater power eventually creates a lethal opening. Before the match, Layla secretly links herself to Lucy through Spiritual Partner; when Quinn's attack should kill Lucy, its damage instead tears through Layla. Lucy abandons the fight immediately, calls for help, and runs toward the daughter she had treated coldly rather than taking the chance to attack Quinn. (Chapters 754–757)

Facing Layla's death forces Lucy to acknowledge that resentment toward Layla's father had shaped her cruelty. She uses life-force Qi to close the wound and give Layla more time, visibly ageing as her own vitality passes into her daughter, then tells Layla that Qi is life energy before her heart stops. Hayley confirms Lucy's death and returns the body to Pure. The sacrifice does not fully heal Layla, but it preserves her long enough for vampire treatment to save her. (Chapters 757–758)

Legacy and name collisions after death

Lucy's death leaves contradictory memories. Layla is told that her mother loved her to the bitter end, while Zero invokes Lucy's idealism and Chris later reveals how her influence inside Pure had been eroded. By Chapter 1877, Chris tells Pure's soldiers that the organisation lost its original purpose with Lucy's death. (Chapters 1184, 1442, 1847, and 1877)

Several chapters after Lucy's confirmed death refer to “Lucy” travelling with Jessica and Minny. The same scenes also explicitly name Lucia, a living spear user in that group, and include narration from Lucia's viewpoint. These later “Lucy” instances are therefore treated as textual name errors for Lucia, not as evidence that Agent Five survived or returned. (Chapters 1637–1639, 1682, and 1796)

Appearance and personality

Lucy is a physically fit older woman with long brown hair and a deeply wrinkled face. As Agent Five she wears Pure's white overcoat with a large number five on the back and carries a thin rapier. Her controlled expression and formal bearing make her difficult for Layla to read; only Layla's mortal injury breaks that composure in public. Lucy ages dramatically during her final use of life-force Qi, with thinning skin, greying hair, and deepening wrinkles as her vitality is depleted. (Chapters 739, 742–743, and 757)

She is disciplined, persuasive, and sincerely hostile to privilege based on abilities. Lucy can be compassionate toward people she sees as victims while remaining ruthless toward those she interprets as embodiments of the system she opposes. Her treatment of Layla is shaped by unresolved trauma and resentment, not lack of all attachment; the final duel reveals love that she had refused to acknowledge until acting on it required her life. (Chapters 739, 753–758, 1442, and 1847)

Powers and abilities

Qi projection and defence

Lucy is an advanced Qi practitioner trained by Zero. She can project force without visible movement, incapacitating three opponents at once, divert projectiles before they reach her, and damage a target internally even when a rapier thrust does not make contact. The same outward force reinforces her defence against explosions and Peter's punch. Stronger or unusually applied Qi can oppose it: Quinn blocks her blade with his own Qi, and she cannot simply overpower him at range. (Chapters 744–745, 751–755, and 1847)

Second-stage weapon coating and anti-healing wounds

Lucy coats her rapier with second-stage Qi, maintaining energy around the blade and leaving it attached to wounds. The residual force blocks ordinary healing abilities and the regeneration of vampires and Wights; it can also part Quinn's shadow defence as the weapon passes through. Against Helen, Lucy controls the damage so recovery is expected after roughly a week, but the more severe wounds inflicted on Peter and Quinn do not heal through blood, meat, or healing powers. The effect is not presented as irreversible: Lucy says she can remove it, and later analysis identifies the foreign Qi remaining around the injury as the cause. (Chapters 751–755, 777, and 782)

Life-force Qi transfer

Lucy can directly control life-force Qi, a rare skill that Zero does not possess. By placing her hands over Layla's wound, she transfers enough vitality to repair severe damage and keep Layla alive, but the exchange rapidly consumes Lucy's own life, ageing and killing her. It is a sacrificial transfer rather than ordinary cost-free healing: Layla still needs further treatment, and no evidence shows Lucy using it without a corresponding loss from herself. (Chapters 757–758 and 1847)

Swordsmanship and combat judgment

Lucy combines Qi with rapid, precise rapier thrusts. She reads unfamiliar regeneration during a fight, pressures Fex so he cannot summon his Blood Weapon, cuts his control strings, and targets armour gaps against Quinn. Her judgment is also fallible: she interprets Peter and the Cursed faction as altered humans and escalates to disabling wounds, a mistaken conclusion that provokes Quinn and leads to the final duel. (Chapters 751–755)

Relationships

• Layla: Lucy raises Layla while resenting the circumstances of her birth and later sends her into infiltration work. Layla nevertheless tries to save her; when Layla takes Quinn's attack through Spiritual Partner, Lucy forfeits and gives her own life to preserve her daughter. (Chapters 739, 744, and 754–758)
• Zero: Zero helps Lucy turn her ideals into Pure and teaches her Qi, but later uses her appeal to recruit followers and admits that her idealism served his purposes. Divergent recruits and internal conflict reduce Lucy's authority before her death. (Chapters 741, 1442, and 1847)
• Chris: Chris co-founds Pure with Lucy and Zero. He remembers her as central to the organisation's original goal and later uses her loss to explain why Zero's Pure no longer deserves obedience. (Chapters 952, 1847, and 1877)
• Quinn: Lucy regards Quinn's faction as another dangerous concentration of unnatural power, while Quinn fights her to save Peter and understand her Qi. Their clash nearly kills Layla, after which Lucy abandons the contest and Quinn recognises her final sacrifice. (Chapters 753–759)
• Cia: Lucy accepts Cia as a Pure member, promises to help restore her memories, and assigns her to remain close to Layla. Cia's future vision gives Layla the warning that shapes the final duel. (Chapters 739 and 852)
