Jessica
Jessica Clark is a former Vampire Corps fighter and the naturally born child of a human mother and vampire father. Her attempt to build an independent life as a Traveller draws her into Quinn's returned circle, where her protective attachment to Minny exposes her dhampir power; later, enemies exploit that power as the focus of a mechanism intended to open a path for Immortui. (Chapters 1577, 1622, 1639–1641, 1713, 1884, and 2328–2357)
Biography
A Traveller with a Hidden Nature
Jessica has left the Vampire Corps and needs work, but fighting is the only profession she believes she can offer. At vampire Noble level she is strong enough for Traveller service, yet the test requires a team, so she bargains information for help from the amnesiac Quinn, Peter, and Minny. Her promise to keep Minny safe begins as part of that arrangement and quickly becomes personal. Corps training lets her endure long periods without blood, while her string ability makes her a defensive partner who pulls endangered vampires away from beasts instead of competing for kills. (Chapters 1577–1589 and 1622)
Jessica repeatedly presses the groups around her to protect people rather than hide behind abstract missions. She persuades the Red vampires that saving civilians would do more for their cause than searching only for the Red Heart. When Minny is badly injured, however, Jessica blames herself for holding back and attacks with the power she has concealed: one eye and one dagger take on yellow dhampir aura, cutting through vampire blood attacks. The revelation makes Red vampires turn on her, but Quinn refuses to abandon her and punishes the people who harmed Minny. (Chapters 1604 and 1622–1641)
Capture by the Chained and Rescue
Jessica's natural dhampir identity makes her valuable to people who know more than she does about her birth. The Chained isolate and capture her, then Russ stages a public wedding that forces her to perform the role of a willing bride. She complies because direct resistance would endanger others, but her fear and emotionless presentation make the coercion visible. Quinn's arrival turns the ceremony into a battle, and Jessica's rescue destroys the political display Russ intended. (Chapters 1649–1655 and 1661–1688)
After the escape, Jessica explains that she was born to a human mother and a vampire father rather than converted by another dhampir. That origin accounts for her single yellow eye and for the absence of the compulsive hatred of vampires found in converted dhampirs, although she initially worries that her dhampir side may simply be weak. The truth changes her from a suspected infiltrator into evidence that the human-vampire boundary is not absolute. (Chapters 1712–1713)
Fighting beside Quinn's Returned Allies
Jessica chooses to keep helping the people who protected her. She joins Muka, Lucia, Minny, and the others in the tournament crisis, fights the shadow guardians, and remains willing to challenge stronger enemies even after admitting how close earlier battles brought her to death. Her style balances rescue and aggression: strings extract allies from danger, while daggers and yellow aura let her exploit the dhampir advantage against vampires. (Chapters 1707, 1722–1747, and 1795)
Once the immediate dhampir threat is broken, Jessica leaves with Lucia to pursue the Traveller life she originally wanted. She does not treat separation as a rejection of Quinn's group; Minny regards her as an aunt, and Jessica returns when their conflicts again endanger the wider world. Her choices remain grounded in ordinary independence rather than a desire for political authority. (Chapters 1862–1884 and 1953)
Magnus's Portal Plot
In the restored settlement, Jessica continues working with the Vampire Corps and joins field missions against violent factions. The people around her begin dying or being targeted because Immortui's agents need her power, leaving her stunned by the cost of others protecting her. Rather than allow more allies to be hurt, she volunteers for a plan in which Magnus is permitted to abduct her so that Quinn's group can locate his operation. She even threatens her own life to force Magnus to spare Andy, demonstrating that her concern is not escape at any price but preventing another sacrifice on her behalf. (Chapters 2318, 2326–2339, and 2346)
Magnus places Jessica at the centre of runes and machinery that drain energy from hundreds of vampires into her natural dhampir power. Her yellow aura becomes the focus of a beam that tears open a portal toward Immortui's world, confirming why she was needed without establishing that she can open such portals unaided. Quinn and his allies interrupt the operation; Andy frees the exhausted Jessica, but Quinn deliberately enters the closing portal alone. Jessica's final response is to demand a way to help him, rejecting the idea that being rescued releases her from responsibility for the people who took risks for her. (Chapters 2346–2357)
Appearance and personality
Jessica is an adult woman whom the wedding attendants describe as beautiful when dressed for the ceremony. Her most important recurring feature is concealed: one eye turns yellow when her dhampir power rises, and she later wears a contact to hide it. She is blunt, independent, and quick to challenge hypocrisy, but also protective to the point of self-blame. Fear can make her hold back, especially when exposure threatens her safety; seeing a child or ally hurt consistently overcomes that hesitation and pushes her toward decisive action. (Chapters 1577, 1604, 1622, 1639, 1661–1668, and 2346)
Powers and abilities
Jessica combines a vampire Noble's physiology with a human ability and a unique natural dhampir heritage. These systems interact: her ordinary red vampire aura and yellow dhampir aura can be channelled separately through paired weapons, while nearby vampires can intensify the dhampir side of her power. (Chapters 1577, 1589, 1639–1641, 1713, and 2346–2349)
Natural dhampir physiology
Unlike dhampirs created by another dhampir, Jessica is born to a human mother and vampire father. Only one eye turns yellow, and she retains the ability to live and cooperate with vampires without the compulsive urge to kill them. When the dhampir side activates, her strength and healing rise, yellow aura overpowers ordinary red blood attacks, and one of her daggers can pierce blood-hardened defence. Strong vampires can still match or injure her, and she cannot defeat multiple leader-level opponents merely by transforming. (Chapters 1639–1641, 1655, and 1713)
Jessica's dhampir strength reacts to vampire power around her. A settlement filled with hundreds of vampires makes her energy fluctuate, and Magnus's device forcibly transfers their energy into her until both eyes and her body blaze yellow. That amplified energy opens a cross-world portal through a prepared network of runes and machinery. Because the process paralyses, restrains, and exhausts her, and because it depends on external donors and equipment, it is not evidence that Jessica can freely create portals herself. (Chapters 2346–2357)
String ability
Jessica produces and controls fine strings that can attach to people or objects. At range she uses them as rescue lines, pulling threatened vampires or a falling Minny to safety. In close combat she anchors strings to an opponent, pulls herself out of an attack's path, disrupts balance, and retrieves or redirects her daggers. The strings are versatile but require placement and control; being outnumbered or forced to defend from several directions can prevent her from converting a successful bind into victory. (Chapters 1622, 1639–1640, and 1649)
Blood aura and dagger combat
Jessica fights with two small daggers and can release blood swipes directly or through the weapons. In her mixed state, one blade carries red vampire aura and the other yellow dhampir aura, giving her different interactions against vampire defence. She combines aggressive footwork with strings rather than avoiding injury entirely, and later overwhelms a hostile vampire's blood swipe during a Corps mission. Her confidence does not make her invulnerable: stronger abilities can rupture her internally, and extended capture leaves her too exhausted to stand unaided. (Chapters 1639–1640, 1747, 2326–2328, and 2357)
Corps training and endurance
Vampire Corps training teaches Jessica to fight in units, assess threats, and go for long periods without blood. She applies those habits as a Traveller and support fighter, holding a defensive line with Lucia and prioritising endangered teammates. The training gives her discipline, not immunity to hunger or unlimited stamina, and her greatest setbacks occur when emotion or coercion denies her the time to assess a battlefield. (Chapters 1577–1589, 1622, 1639, and 2326–2339)
Relationships
- Minny: Jessica's promise to protect Minny grows into an aunt-like bond. Minny's injuries trigger Jessica's first open use of dhampir power, and Jessica's guilt over failing her becomes a recurring motive to stop holding back. (Chapters 1577, 1622, 1639–1641, 1743–1747, and 1884)
- Quinn: Jessica first knows Quinn under the name Nate and trades him information for help forming a Traveller team. He protects her after her identity is exposed and later organises the effort to rescue her from Magnus; she, in turn, insists that the group find a way to help him after he enters Immortui's world. (Chapters 1577, 1641, 1713, 2328–2357)
- Lucia: Lucia is Jessica's closest recurring field partner. They defend others together, keep each other's secrets, survive the Chained crisis, and eventually leave to pursue Traveller work as companions. (Chapters 1589, 1622, 1639–1641, 1722–1747, and 1884)
- Russ: Russ captures Jessica and forces her to participate in his wedding as political theatre. She fears him and plays along to survive, while her rescue becomes the event that destroys his position as Chained leader. (Chapters 1649–1655 and 1661–1688)
- Andy: Andy treats Jessica as a Corps member worth protecting rather than a specimen. She risks capture and threatens suicide to save him from Magnus, while Andy nearly dies trying to prevent that capture and later frees her restraints. (Chapters 1648, 1655, 2328–2339, and 2357)
Items
- Paired daggers: Jessica's recurring close-combat weapons. She channels red vampire aura through one and yellow dhampir aura through the other, while her strings let her throw, retrieve, and reposition them. (Chapters 1639–1640, 1649, and 2327)
- Colored contact lens: A concealment measure worn over Jessica's yellow eye to hide her natural dhampir identity; Magnus tears it out after her capture. (Chapter 2346)
