Defiant Monk
Defiant Monk is a Sniper and early member of Lone Desert Smoke who joins Zhang Yang for the formative Bangar Crypt clears. His record centers on reliable ranged damage, outspoken support for fair party leadership, and competent execution of raid mechanics, tempered by limited early survivability and occasional mistakes under pressure. (Chapters 14–30, 84, and 211–212)
Biography
Rebirth and White Jade City
Defiant Monk first appears among the damage dealers in Zhang Yang's improvised Bangar Crypt party, placing fourth in the first recorded damage report. He quickly sides with Zhang Yang against the Pride players: he explains that Black Claw's Venom Spit chooses a random target, challenges Floral Shorts when the leader changes the loot system to Master Loot, and condemns Pride's attempts to claim unsuitable rewards. His own early treatment of loot is more cooperative. After Ocean Despair passes him a Hard Leather Chest Plate, Defiant Monk is openly grateful, and he continues through Hard and Hardcore Modes despite surviving one Venom Spit with only forty health and later dying when a curse catches him at low health while his potion is on cooldown. (Chapters 14–24)
He becomes part of the party credited with Bangar Crypt's Hardcore first clear, where the system identifies him as a Lone Desert Smoke Sniper. The run also exposes both his enthusiasm and the costs of early mechanics: he narrowly loses a weapon roll to Fatty Han, is demonized and forced toward Silky Snow, dies later in the same encounter, and subsequently wins an Archer's Ring. Outside the dungeon he keeps in daily contact with Zhang Yang, praises him to guildmates, and summons him to help with Martyr Unduin. His confidence in Zhang Yang becomes almost blind, but when the assembled party collapses before the attempt, Defiant Monk apologizes for wasting his trip. (Chapters 27–30 and 36–40)
Defiant Monk remains useful in later Lone Desert Smoke raids. Zhang Yang assigns him to the interruption team against Marzerway, and when the paired Spellcaster fails to respond, Defiant Monk's Silencing Shot alone stops Hail Storm. He later handles ranged assignments with Hundred Shots and Fatty Han and appears in Zhang Yang's close small party during a major monster defense. Against Roshan, however, he initially forgets that Tumble can separate him from Chain of Burning Flame. He corrects the mistake on a later selection, only for Han Ying Xue to run back into him and trigger overlapping damage that kills him; he accepts her apology with resignation. (Chapters 84–86, 185, and 211–212)
Appearance and personality
The corpus does not describe Defiant Monk's face, body, or real-world appearance. His presentation is instead class-coded: the first-clear record calls him a Sniper, he qualifies for Hunter rewards, wears leather armor, and fights at range. Those gameplay markers should not be expanded into unsupported physical traits. (Chapters 18, 27–30, and 84)
Defiant Monk is outspoken, fairness-minded, sociable, and loyal. He confronts abuse and suspicious loot rules rather than remaining silent, thanks Ocean Despair for a voluntary handoff, and becomes friendly enough with the early party to banter with Fatty Han. He obeys Zhang Yang readily and recommends him enthusiastically to others, although this admiration can turn into overconfidence. His forgotten Tumble and resigned response to an ally-caused death add a self-deprecating, good-humored edge to an otherwise earnest raid member. (Chapters 16, 18, 23, 28, 36–39, 84, and 212)
Abilities and gameplay
Ranged damage and control
As a Sniper, Defiant Monk provides sustained ranged physical damage. He accounts for ten percent of the first recorded boss damage and nine percent in a later report, respectable placement within the mixed early party without evidence that he is its dominant attacker. Demonized Momorermo can seize control of him, double his apparent size, raise his health to 3,000, and direct him toward a healer; allied damage then breaks the control when the temporary health is exhausted. (Chapters 14, 21, and 29)
His key group utility is Silencing Shot, the Hunter interruption skill. It costs twenty-five Focus; Hunters have a maximum of one hundred Focus and recover ten per second, so an interruption rotation must preserve enough resource for each cast. Against Hail Storm, Defiant Monk reacts when his paired Spellcaster does not, and his shot lands in time to stop the channel. The encounter also explains why Zhang Yang assigns redundant interrupters: a shot can miss or a player can fail to act. (Chapter 84)
Mobility and limits
Tumble moves a Hunter ten meters and is an effective answer to Chain of Burning Flame, which teleports selected players together and punishes proximity. Defiant Monk forgets the option during an early selection but uses it immediately on a later one. The skill creates the intended gap from two allies, yet it cannot compensate for Han Ying Xue reversing course and running into him; potions, fire resistance, and her healing only delay his resulting death. (Chapters 211–212)
His early failures are usually encounter-driven rather than a lack of damage. Venom Spit leaves him at forty health before two healers recover him, Curse of Fire kills him when low health and potion cooldown coincide, and boss demonization removes player control entirely. These cases establish limited durability and dependence on positioning, healing, and consumable timing rather than a special personal defensive kit. (Chapters 21, 24, 29, and 212)
Relationships
- Zhang Yang: Defiant Monk defends Zhang Yang's instructions, supports transferring party leadership to him, keeps in regular contact afterward, and recommends him so strongly that the narration describes his trust as blind. Zhang Yang in turn respects his guild affiliation when naming a later first-kill party. (Chapters 16, 27, and 36–40)
- Ocean Despair: Ocean Despair helps heal Defiant Monk after Venom Spit and voluntarily gives him the Hard Leather Chest Plate after winning its roll. Their early cooperation contrasts with the Pride players' self-serving loot behavior. (Chapters 18 and 21)
- Han Ying Xue: Han Ying Xue is one of his later raid leaders and healers. During Roshan's Chain of Burning Flame, her loss of direction causes her to collide with him after he has correctly used Tumble; he accepts her apology after dying. (Chapter 212)
- Hundred Shots and Fatty Han: The three Hunters share loot competition and ranged raid assignments. Defiant Monk narrowly loses one weapon roll to Fatty Han, later defeats both of them for the Archer's Ring, and works alongside them on summons and interruption coverage. (Chapters 28, 30, 84, and 86)
- Silky Snow: Silky Snow helps save him after Venom Spit and becomes the nearest target when Momorermo demonizes him, forcing the ranged group to break the control before he reaches her. (Chapters 21 and 29)
Items
- Hard Leather Chest Plate: A Level 5 Black-Steel leather chest piece with two Armor, Vitality, and Dexterity. Ocean Despair wins the open roll but passes it to Defiant Monk, the eligible leather wearer with the second-highest result. (Chapter 18)
- Archer's Ring: A Level 10 Green-Copper ring with two Vitality and three Dexterity. Its ranged attacks have a chance to trigger Wind's Blessing, increasing attack speed by ten percent for ten seconds without stacking; Defiant Monk wins it with a roll of 100. (Chapter 30)
- Potions: Red potions repeatedly help him manage incidental damage, while a Fire Resistance Potion extends his survival during Chain of Burning Flame. Potion cooldown is also a demonstrated limit when Curse of Water and Fire kills him before another dose is available. (Chapters 24, 29, and 212)
