Ocean Despair
Ocean Despair is a guildless Sacred Knight who serves as one of the two healers in Zhang Yang's early Bangar Crypt parties. He is a dutiful but blunt support player whose fair handling of loot and acquisition of Resurrection make him memorable, even though Zhang Yang ultimately judges his skill and spatial awareness insufficient for solo responsibility in a permanent dungeon team. (Chapters 14–30 and 42)
Biography
Rebirth and White Jade City
Ocean Despair enters Bangar Crypt as a guildless healer frustrated by the Pride players' refusal to follow instructions. He complains when Kindling Chest Hair creates unnecessary healing pressure, answers boasting with the Heal Received statistics, and initially stops supporting him after repeated abuse. Even so, when Kindling Chest Hair faces lethal damage, Ocean Despair puts personal dislike aside and casts the needed heal. His patience finally breaks during the curse encounter, where Pride players refuse to move while demanding impossible support; Ocean Despair declares that he will no longer heal them and holds to that decision. (Chapters 14–17)
His conduct toward cooperative players is markedly different. After winning a Hard Leather Chest Plate that he cannot use, he gives it to Defiant Monk, the eligible player with the second-highest roll. He later wins a Heavy Hammer, helps heal Defiant Monk from forty health, passes unsuitable loot, and follows Zhang Yang's combat instructions even when the healers are told to enter melee and deal only one point per strike. He and Silky Snow manage their limited mana through the Hardcore clear, earning Ocean Despair a place on the recorded first-clear party as its unaffiliated Sacred Knight. (Chapters 18–28)
The hidden boss places that support partnership under maximum strain. Silky Snow's Regeneration consumes mana quickly while Ocean Despair preserves slightly more, but when she runs dry, he must spam Holy Light across the party until his own bar flashes low; Momorermo then demonizes him and removes the remaining healer from play. After the victory, Ocean Despair beats Silky Snow's roll for the rare Resurrection book and learns it immediately before she can negotiate, then begins reviving the dead party members. Zhang Yang later considers recruiting him for future dungeons because Ocean admires him, but decides that Ocean Despair lacks the skill and spatial awareness to heal a five-player party alone. (Chapters 29–30 and 36–42)
Appearance and personality
The corpus gives no description of Ocean Despair's face, body, clothing, or real-world identity. His visible profile is mechanical: he is a Sacred Knight, equips a one-handed hammer, qualifies for heavy support armor, and performs direct healing in combat. The text does not establish a guild affiliation beyond explicitly listing him as unaffiliated during the Bangar Crypt first clear. (Chapters 19, 21, and 27)
Ocean Despair is terse, dutiful, fair, and proud. He prefers posting objective statistics to prolonging an argument, heals a player he dislikes when survival requires it, and gives an unusable reward to the proper recipient. His uncharacteristic boasting before Hardcore Mode and instant consumption of the Resurrection book also reveal competitive excitement and stubbornness. Zhang Yang regards him as courteous enough to refuse an unsolicited gift, but admiration and good manners do not erase his assessed gameplay limitations. (Chapters 15–18, 22, 30, 41–42)
Abilities and gameplay
Sacred Knight healing
Ocean Despair's demonstrated core spell is Holy Light, a direct heal that he can cast on allies or himself. Recovering from a delayed Curse of Water and Fire pairing requires three self-casts, and covering the whole party after Silky Snow exhausts her mana forces him to spam the spell until his own resource bar reaches warning level. His performance is therefore strongest as focused support beside another healer, not as a replacement for Silky Snow's party-wide Regeneration. (Chapters 17 and 29)
Mana is his principal encounter resource and limitation. Ocean reports his remaining percentage when asked, coordinates potion timing, and reaches a point where only two further heals are possible during the final Hardcore boss. Terrain exploitation reduces incoming pressure enough for his and Silky Snow's reserves to last in a later fight, illustrating that healing endurance depends on mechanics and tank avoidance as much as raw spell use. (Chapters 23–26 and 29)
Resurrection and encounter execution
Resurrection revives a player who died outside combat, eliminating the return journey from the dungeon entrance or spawn point. It cannot be learned from a class instructor and comes from a rare skill book available to Sacred Knights and Priests. Once Ocean Despair wins the book, he consumes it at once and channels the spell over the fallen party, giving the group a major recovery convenience between attempts rather than an in-combat reversal. (Chapters 15 and 30)
He generally responds to encounter calls: he runs to meet an uncooperative curse partner, reports mana accurately, moves into melee when healing is exhausted, and contributes token weapon damage. His limits become clearest when group coverage falls entirely on him and in Zhang Yang's later assessment that his technique and spatial awareness are below the standard needed for sole-healer duty. (Chapters 17, 23–24, 29, and 42)
Relationships
- Zhang Yang: Ocean Despair follows Zhang Yang's raid calls and becomes a strong admirer after the Bangar Crypt clears. Zhang Yang considers him for a new dungeon party and recognizes his courtesy, but decides not to rely on him as the only healer. (Chapters 14–30 and 36–42)
- Silky Snow: The two share healing responsibility throughout Bangar Crypt. Silky Snow supplies Regeneration while Ocean Despair provides Holy Light and preserves more mana; they also become direct rivals for the Resurrection book, which Ocean wins and learns before she can bargain. (Chapters 21, 23–24, and 29–30)
- Defiant Monk: Ocean Despair heals him after Venom Spit and voluntarily hands him the Hard Leather Chest Plate. The gift is one of the clearest examples of Ocean's preference for functionally fair loot distribution. (Chapters 18 and 21)
- Kindling Chest Hair: Ocean Despair resents the Defender's poor play and abuse, yet still heals him in a genuine emergency. Their conflict escalates only when Kindling Chest Hair and other Pride players repeatedly ignore mechanics while blaming the healers. (Chapters 14–17)
- Prideful Babysitter: Prideful Babysitter is his fellow healer in the first run and is left trying to sustain Pride members after Ocean Despair refuses further support. Their shared role underscores how uncooperative targets can overwhelm even multiple early healers. (Chapters 14–17)
Items
- Heavy Hammer: A Level 5 Black-Steel one-handed hammer with eight to twelve Magic Attack. Ocean Despair wins it after the Bangar Crypt encounter, making it a suitable early Sacred Knight healing weapon. (Chapter 19)
- Resurrection skill book: A rare healer-class book won over Silky Snow by a roll of ninety-one to eighty-six. Ocean Despair immediately consumes it, so the book becomes the learned Resurrection skill rather than remaining an inventory item. (Chapter 30)
- Hard Leather Chest Plate: Ocean Despair wins this Level 5 Black-Steel leather piece in an open roll but passes it to Defiant Monk because the Sniper can use it. It is associated with Ocean's loot conduct, not his own equipment set. (Chapter 18)
