Grand Elder Ouyang — I Shall Seal the Heavens

Grand Elder Ouyang is a senior Reliance Sect leader who becomes an early observer and protector of Meng Hao. He values luck, ingenuity, and resilience, intervening at crucial moments without trying to control Meng Hao's opportunities.

Biography

Interest in Meng Hao

Ouyang first notices Meng Hao not because the new disciple displays overwhelming talent, but because he survives the Reliance Sect's predatory environment through judgment. Meng Hao turns an unwanted Dry Spirit Pill into Xu Qing's protection, and Ouyang praises the instinct to find a reliable senior rather than expose himself alone. He later approves Meng Hao's effort to maintain that relationship. Ouyang's interest is therefore grounded in adaptability and fortune, qualities the sect's harsher disciples undervalue. When Wang Tengfei publicly punishes Meng Hao, Ouyang does not erase the senior disciple's authority or declare Meng Hao innocent of every conflict. He intervenes when Wang's finger attack would cripple the weaker youth, blocks it, and orders the matter ended. The restraint protects a promising disciple without turning Ouyang into Meng Hao's constant shield; Meng Hao must still navigate the consequences of humiliating Wang. (Chapters 16–17)

Inner Sect tournament

Ouyang accepts Meng Hao and Li Fugui's registrations for the Inner Sect promotion tournament. Registration places them inside a formal sect process and beyond Shangguan Xiu's immediate attempt to isolate them. As officiant, Ouyang treats the tournament as a test rather than an execution ground. He enforces surrender by deflecting Xu Ge's flying sword before it kills Li Fugui, then continues observing Meng Hao's battles with increasing approval. (Chapters 28–31)

Meng Hao wins only after exhausting himself against stronger and better-established rivals. He Luohua intervenes in the aftermath, and Ouyang supplies medicine to stabilize the victor. The elder's support does not manufacture Meng Hao's victory; it ensures that the sect's own test honors its outcome instead of letting a successful junior die after the result is decided. Reliance Sect's end

Ouyang attends the meditation-zone ceremony and watches the returning disciples just as Patriarch Reliance's false auspicious sign draws outside powers toward the State of Zhao. He stands ready beside He Luohua but cannot solve a crisis involving experts far beyond an ordinary sect. He silently accepts Chen Fan's departure when the younger man receives a greater opportunity, placing the disciple's future above institutional possession. (Chapters 38–42)

After the Patriarch's manifestation and the Reliance Sect's collapse, Ouyang removes the former Outer Sect disciples into the mountains. The action preserves lives and gives survivors distance from the ruined grounds, but it cannot restore the organization. His role changes from tournament guardian to custodian of what remains. Southern Domain War and Dao Seeking

Much later, Ouyang and He Luohua live quietly and run a noodle stall as their remaining longevity approaches its end. They leave that modest retirement to attend Meng Hao's wedding. Ouyang watches with a benevolent smile, seeing the vulnerable Outer Sect youth he once protected become a figure whose marriage gathers the Southern Domain. The return gives closure to his early judgment without claiming that he directed Meng Hao's path. (Chapters 764 and 766)

Appearance and personality

Ouyang is tall and broad, wears gray robes, and has mottled marks on his face. He is gentler and less forceful than a domineering sect master, but that softness is paired with firm boundaries. He stops crippling attacks, enforces surrender, and protects exhausted participants without trying to control every rivalry. He admires Meng Hao's fortune and ingenuity without demanding its secrets or claiming ownership over the youth's opportunities. (Chapters 17 and 28–33)

His acceptance of Chen Fan's departure and later life at a noodle stall show little attachment to status for its own sake. Ouyang values the survival and future of disciples more than preserving the appearance of a powerful institution after that institution has ceased to function. (Chapters 42–43 and 764–766)

Abilities and cultivation

Senior Reliance Sect cultivation

The supplied chapters do not give Ouyang a precise cultivation stage or a named foundational technique. They establish him as a senior whose power greatly exceeds that of Outer Sect and promotion-tournament disciples. He can halt Wang Tengfei's crippling finger attack and effortlessly deflect Xu Ge's flying sword, using controlled intervention rather than killing either junior. Ouyang repeatedly observes contests closely enough to recognize intent, danger, exhaustion, and the significance of Meng Hao's unusual fortune. This is partly cultivated perception and partly experience as an elder. It lets him intervene at the exact point a trial would become an unlawful killing, yet it is not presented as prophecy: he sees promising qualities in Meng Hao without knowing the youth's eventual destiny. Sect authority and protection

As Grand Elder, Ouyang can register candidates, officiate promotion battles, enforce surrender, distribute medicine, access protected sect areas, and organize the removal of disciples during dissolution. These powers arise from office and institutional trust rather than a magical command technique. They work while the Reliance Sect's hierarchy still has meaning; when outside experts and the awakened Patriarch overwhelm that structure, Ouyang can protect survivors but not command the greater conflict.
