Chen Fan is Meng Hao’s righteous, protective, and famously talkative senior brother.

Biography

State of Zhao and the Reliance Sect

As a Reliance Inner Sect disciple, Chen guides Meng Hao, explores Patriarch Reliance’s meditation zone, refuses to remove the Sublime Spirit Scripture stele, and stays loyal when the sect dissolves. His integrity moves Zhou Yanyun to accept him as a personal disciple. (Chapters 4–43)

Years later, Chen reunites with Meng Hao during a Solitary Sword–Blood Demon clash. He protects him from Zhou Shanyue and Elder Brother Li, brings him into the Solitary Sword Sect, shares Sword Wine and earnest cultivation advice, and enthusiastically converses with Ultimate Vexation. He trusts Meng Hao with a Core-level flying dagger for the Battle Arena wager and accompanies him to the Song Clan gathering and World Tree trial. (Chapters 178–194)

Chen later witnesses the Dao Geyser's upheaval, attends Pill Demon's Violet Furnace Lord ceremony with the Solitary Sword Sect, and is among the Southern Domain cultivators who watch Meng Hao's desperate battle outside the Rebirth Cave. His horror and admiration reinforce that his loyalty to his junior brother remains intact. (Chapters 264–313)

Black Lands, Crow Divinity, and the Demon Immortal Sect

Chen cannot follow Meng Hao into the Western Desert, but he watches his junior brother escape the Rebirth Cave and silently wishes him well. Years later, the severing of Meng Hao's image from the memories of the Southern Domain makes Chen cough blood and forget the person who occupied that place in his past. The loss is imposed on him rather than a change of loyalty, and his bond resurfaces once Meng Hao returns. (Chapters 314 and 424–425)

Southern Domain War and Dao Seeking

Chen Fan senses Meng Hao's apparent death and responds with unexplained killing intent. At the Ancient Dao Lakes he is forced to retreat with Fatty during the confrontation over the Blood Demon Sect, then watches Meng Hao seize and redistribute the lakes. He later reunites with old companions and fights in the Southern Domain war, only to learn of his master's death and Shan Ling's endless sleep. Rather than abandon her, he remains beside the boulder containing her and treats that vigil as part of his cultivation. He nevertheless attends Meng Hao and Xu Qing's wedding and returns to battle during the Northern invasion. (Chapters 683–736 and 738–783)

The Wider Ninth Mountain and Sea

Chen Fan enters the Three Great Daoist Societies' Nascent Soul Ancient Road, advances through its tests and arena battles, and later observes Meng Hao's ascension and Fang Clan struggles from afar. By Chapter 982 he watches from the Solitary Sword Pavilion and raises an alcohol flagon to his junior brother. (Chapters 841–882 and 982)

Nine Seas and the Windswept Realm

Chen Fan's situation is used as part of the pressure placed on Meng Hao during the Windswept Realm conflict. He later reunites with Meng Hao and reveals the Heart-Sword Domain, a sword path founded on the distinction between the real and the artificial. (Chapter 1114) and (Chapter 1203)

Meng Clan and the Mountain and Sea War

Chen Fan answers the widening war as one of Meng Hao's senior friends and fellow cultivators. He is present for Dao Tribulation, the return to the 33 Hells, the arrival of 8-Essences enemies, and the defense of Planet South Heaven, standing with the Mountain and Sea cultivators through their successive last stands. (Chapters 1338, 1374–1375, 1378, 1386–1389 and 1393)

Vast Expanse and Transcendence

Within Allheaven's constructed Blue Sea Sect reality, Chen Fan repeatedly tells Meng Hao that the Vast Expanse was only an Arcane Pocket Realm illusion. His familiar loyalty and certainty help make the false life convincing. (Chapters 1506–1511)

Allheaven exploits Chen Fan's grief for Shan Ling, offering resurrection in exchange for his cooperation. He accepts its power and fights Meng Hao, but Meng Hao severs their Karmic bond and breaks the possession. Once lucid, Chen Fan takes his own life, ending Allheaven's use of him and leaving Meng Hao to mourn his senior brother. (Chapters 1512–1513)

Appearance and personality

Chen is handsome, righteous-looking, warm, moral, loyal, and almost impossibly verbose. He rejects killing as the Dao itself and risks sect conflict to defend Meng Hao.

Abilities and cultivation

Solitary Sword cultivation

Chen reaches early Foundation Establishment after entering the Solitary Sword Sect and becomes one of its seven prominent Solitary Sword Sons. His sect's group sword art can draw hundreds of disciples' flying swords into a single three-hundred-meter weapon, converting a formation's combined cultivation into one overwhelming strike. This power depends on multiple sword cultivators and their weapons; it is not an attack Chen can reproduce at the same scale alone. (Chapters 120 and 178)

Heart-Sword Dao

Chen's mature path does not sever emotion. He converges his love for Shan Ling into a sword and defines memory, attachment, and grief as the substance of his Dao. Within his roughly nine-meter Heart-Sword Domain, what truly exists in his heart can manifest: Shan Ling walks beside him and is real to him, although outsiders perceive the manifestation as artificial. The Domain therefore converts emotional certainty into sword-law reality, but its scope is centered on Chen and does not resurrect Shan Ling for the wider world. By this stage he is an Immortal Realm cultivator with the potential to enter the Ancient Realm. (Chapter 1203)

Sword weapons and tactical knowledge

Zhou Yanyun gives Chen a black flying dagger containing Core Formation power, which Chen entrusts to Meng Hao for a dangerous wager. It grants a limited higher-realm attack through a prepared treasure rather than raising Chen's own cultivation. His long study of sect records also lets him identify scriptures, formations, and cultivation principles; that scholarship supports his role as Meng Hao's first patient instructor. (Chapters 38–40 and 178–194)

Allheaven possession

The memory magic and Allheaven Transformation used in Chen's last battle are borrowed powers forced through him by Allheaven, not native Heart-Sword techniques. The first searches the total history of Chen's memories for versions of Meng Hao and turns those memory-images into attackers whose seeds can infect a target. The transformation then evaporates Chen's muscle and blood into mist saturated with Allheaven's will while sharply raising his cultivation. Both depend on possession, and Meng Hao ends their control by severing the Karmic link; the lucid Chen then chooses death rather than serve as Allheaven's weapon. (Chapters 1512–1513)
