Xu Qing

Xu Qing is a cultivator of the Mountain and Sea Realm and the wife of Meng Hao. Quiet, resolute, and emotionally steadfast, she remains one of the central anchors of Meng Hao's life across the nine supplied volumes.

Biography

State of Zhao and the Reliance Sect

Xu Qing first sees Meng Hao searching for rattan on Mount Daqing and takes him, along with three other youths, to fill the Reliance Sect's need for servants. At the time she is an Inner Sect disciple at the seventh level of Qi Condensation, able to fly only because Patriarch Reliance has given her a Wind Pennant. Meng Hao later gives her a rare Dry Spirit Pill to escape the attention that winning it has brought him. She understands the exchange but still repays him with the use of her former Immortal's cave, whose denser spiritual energy helps him establish himself as a cultivator. (Chapters 1 and 5)

Her protection develops through quiet acts rather than declarations. She visits Meng Hao before entering secluded meditation, accepts the Cosmetic Cultivation Pill he obtained for her, gives him a protective jade pendant, and allows him to walk beside her through the Outer Sect. Long afterward she reveals that she also concealed evidence of his killing of Zhao Wugang. During the awakening of Patriarch Reliance, Xu Qing, Chen Fan, and Meng Hao enter the sect catacombs together, but the Reliance Sect's collapse separates them: a Black Sieve Sect expert carries the unconscious Xu Qing away while Meng Hao remains behind as Patriarch Reliance's chosen heir. Black Sieve Sect and Matriarch Phoenix

Life in the Black Sieve Sect leaves Xu Qing isolated. Still only at the ninth level of Qi Condensation, she refuses a Conclave disciple's coercive offer of a Foundation Establishment Pill and refuses to trade away Meng Hao's Cosmetic Cultivation Pill. When Zhao Shanhe later corners her inside the sect's Blessed Land, she chooses death rather than submit. Meng Hao finds her, kills the attackers, and escorts her through the ruins; their reunion makes clear that the Reliance Sect has become an emotional home that neither has replaced. (Chapters 120 and 148–154)

The Black Sieve Sect subsequently makes Xu Qing the host of Grand Matriarch Phoenix's discarnate soul. Meng Hao infiltrates the sect as Fang Mu and concocts a pill containing his own Demon Sealer blood. The blood nourishes Xu Qing's fading soul while suppressing Matriarch Phoenix, enabling Xu Qing to reverse the possession and begin consuming the discarnate soul from within. She then impersonates the Matriarch so completely that the sect grants her the authority of an ancient ancestor. A second Cosmetic Cultivation Pill tells her that Fang Mu is Meng Hao, and their private reunion confirms that their years apart have strengthened rather than erased their bond. (Chapters 256–259)

The fusion gives Xu Qing great power but leaves dangerous dependencies. She can initially use only a fraction of Matriarch Phoenix's strength, and forcing out more injures her. Until the consumption is complete, remaining away from the Black Sieve Sect for too long causes her cultivation to deteriorate. During Meng Hao's Core Formation breakthrough she nevertheless stands between him and Ji Hongdong, fights Li Daoyi with white soul-qi, and manifests a black phoenix of discarnate souls. Ji Clan blood suppresses those souls and exposes the possession, proving that the borrowed power has a direct counter. (Chapters 298 and 303–304)

Demon Immortal Sect and the Rebirth Cave

In the ancient Demon Immortal Sect illusion, Xu Qing and Meng Hao briefly experience the quiet partnership denied to them elsewhere. She identifies that he has entered in his true body rather than through a host, accepts his jade slip containing three hundred Demon Immortal Daoist magics, and devotes herself to comprehending the techniques best suited to her. Their shared cultivation deepens their relationship without requiring either of them to abandon an individual path. (Chapters 576–617)

When Meng Hao later returns from the Western Desert aged and dying, Xu Qing recognizes him despite his attempt to hide his identity. She has searched for him for a century and refuses his effort to make her believe he is dead. Her answer is to carve a grave for them both and promise that if he lives, she lives, and if he dies, she dies. She accompanies him into the Rebirth Cave even as its death aura consumes her life force, repeatedly transferring that life force to him until she is ancient and near death herself. A remnant will of the Resurrection Lily sends her away with knowledge of the Soul Birth Pill; Xu Qing obtains it at terrible cost and has Fatty deliver it, allowing Meng Hao to return to life. The Black Sieve Sect captures Xu Qing, separates her soul from her body, and attempts to refine both into Rebirth Pills. Meng Hao destroys the sect's resistance to retrieve her. Her soul is ultimately given a place in the Fourth Mountain and Sea's cycle of reincarnation, while her restored body is granted only one hundred years of life. She spends that life with Meng Hao in the Blood Demon Sect, where their private commitment becomes an openly acknowledged betrothal. (Chapters 694–704 and 711–735)

Wedding, death, and reincarnation

The Northern Reaches attack during Xu Qing and Meng Hao's wedding and release the Hellwither Nineruins curse over the assembled Southern Domain cultivators. Meng Hao absorbs most of it, but Xu Qing's already-restored body cannot withstand even the remainder; the curse compresses an entire lifetime of aging into days. They complete the interrupted ceremony on the battlefield, becoming husband and wife under Pill Demon's witness. Xu Qing then severs her own arteries so that Meng Hao will stop sacrificing his vitality to prolong her life. Her body dissolves, and her soul enters reincarnation with Fang Xiufeng's divine will protecting it. (Chapters 764 and 769–773)

Meng Hao eventually learns that Xu Qing has been reborn in the Fourth Mountain and has become Kṣitigarbha's disciple. Kṣitigarbha's instruction advances her cultivation rapidly and reveals an unexpected talent for strategy. During the Mountain and Sea War she coordinates the entire Fourth Mountain and Sea military effort, directing multiple fronts while her master fights the invading Imperial Lord. Her role is not ceremonial: she draws out the realm's available strength and later leads its counteroffensive. (Chapters 1105–1107, 1319, 1335, and 1351)

Vast Expanse and Transcendence

During the realm's final retreat, Xu Qing survives inside the Mountain and Sea Butterfly. Allheaven later uses a soul-projection of her in the false reality intended to convince Meng Hao that his memories are a dream. The projection's cold insistence that he pursue the title Son of Allheaven helps him recognize that the constructed world does not contain the wife he knows. (Chapter 1509)

After two thousand years of waiting, the real Xu Qing senses Meng Hao's return. Their reunion beside his parents restores the family connection severed by the war, and they travel through the Butterfly together while he rebuilds the Mountain and Sea Realm. Meng Hao takes her to Kṣitigarbha's sect as her bridal home; later, when they visit the sleeping Chu Yuyan, Xu Qing responds with compassion and offers to cultivate together if Chu Yuyan awakens still remembering him. (Chapters 1543, 1553–1558, and 1562)

Beyond Allheaven

Allheaven's curse prevents the old generation from entering reincarnation and ages them to death. Meng Hao sustains Xu Qing with his blood longer than the others, then uses natural laws and Heaven-Sealing magic to isolate her inside an ice coffin when even that is no longer enough. The method preserves rather than cures her and costs him heavily, but it separates her from the curse until Allheaven is defeated. He finally melts the coffin and awakens her, restores the cycle of reincarnation for their loved ones, and leaves the starry sky with Xu Qing to explore the Universe. (Chapters 1589, 1591–1592, 1608, and 1610–1614)

Appearance and personality

Xu Qing has understated beauty and a cold, quiet manner that other people often mistake for aloofness. She understands herself differently: she is simple, dislikes complicated situations, and learned to use silence and a cold expression to hide uncertainty. That simplicity is not weakness. Once she chooses a course, she follows it past ordinary limits—refusing coercion in the Black Sieve Sect, searching for Meng Hao for a century, and entering a cave that consumes the life force of living beings because she will not abandon him.

She expresses affection through action. Gifts are repaid, dangers are concealed, and promises are treated as literal commitments. Her willingness to sacrifice herself is paired with a strong concern for the cost Meng Hao pays for her; she ends her first restored life rather than permit him to continue exchanging his vitality for a few more days. In war, the same calm reserve becomes strategic discipline, allowing her to coordinate the Fourth Mountain and Sea while others carry out the fighting.

Abilities and cultivation

Cultivation progression

Xu Qing is at the seventh level of Qi Condensation when she brings Meng Hao to the Reliance Sect and reaches the ninth level after joining the Black Sieve Sect. Her fusion with Matriarch Phoenix gives her access to power comparable to a sect Patriarch, although she initially controls only about one percent of it and suffers injury when she forces out more. After reincarnation, Kṣitigarbha teaches her in the Fourth Mountain; the text states that her cultivation advances by leaps and bounds but does not give a final named stage. Her importance in the later war rests as much on command ability as direct battle power. (Chapters 1, 120, 303, and 1319)

Matriarch Phoenix soul fusion

The Phoenix power originates in possession. Meng Hao's Demon Sealer blood suppresses the invading discarnate soul and nourishes Xu Qing's own soul, letting her consume Matriarch Phoenix while remaining the body's true will. White qi from the fusion becomes threads for direct attack; when she draws more deeply on it, her eyes turn black and the qi becomes a black phoenix composed of vicious discarnate faces. This can briefly raise her output toward the Nascent Soul level and overpower ordinary Core Formation opponents. (Chapters 259 and 303)

The power has defined limits. Excess use injures Xu Qing because it is not yet fully hers. Before the fusion is complete, distance from the Black Sieve Sect makes her cultivation deteriorate. Ji Clan blood also commands the dead under the clan's Heavens: Ji Hongdong's presence forces her discarnate souls and Matriarch Phoenix to prostrate, suppressing the black phoenix and leaving Xu Qing with only the cultivation she can wield herself. Demon Immortal Daoist magics

Meng Hao gives Xu Qing a jade slip containing three hundred Daoist magics from the ancient Demon Immortal Sect. She declines the more competitive Demon Immortal Pagoda because the available three hundred are sufficient and spends most of the illusion in concentrated enlightenment. The corpus does not identify which individual techniques she successfully carries out of the illusion, so they cannot be assigned named effects. What is established is her method: she selects techniques compatible with her own path and values sustained comprehension over gathering the largest possible collection. (Chapters 576, 579, 588, and 592)

Life-force transfer and soul endurance

Inside the Rebirth Cave, Xu Qing deliberately passes her life force to Meng Hao through physical contact, keeping a final strand alive after the cave has stripped away his cultivation and vitality. Each transfer restores him temporarily while aging and weakening her; continuing to the end would scatter her soul permanently. This is a sacrifice of her own life force, not a repeatable healing technique without cost. Her later deaths and restorations depend on outside systems—the Soul Birth Pill, the Fourth Mountain's reincarnation, Meng Hao's blood, and finally his Heaven-Sealing ice coffin—rather than personal immortality. Strategy and command

Under Kṣitigarbha, Xu Qing develops a talent for strategy and tactics. During the Mountain and Sea War she remains behind guarded lines and continuously issues orders across every front in the Fourth Mountain and Sea, coordinating its armies while Kṣitigarbha is occupied by an Imperial Lord. Her strength here is information, prioritization, and control of large formations rather than a single named divine ability; the result is a realm-wide counteroffensive that uses the Fourth Mountain and Sea's remaining power at its limit.
