Keli

Keli is Saul's earliest wizard peer, closest lifelong friend, and a major researcher in metal-based radiation. What begins as a blunt alliance between two gifted First Rank Apprentices develops into a durable partnership built on exchanged knowledge, dangerous birthday gifts, and mutual rescue. She ultimately turns her Alpha research into a defense against Black Tide pollution, commands forces in the Chaos Realm, reaches Fourth Rank, and preserves the Purity Wizard Tower as a place devoted to study. Biography

Tower classmates and metal apprenticeship

Keli meets Saul immediately after their admission to Gorsa Wizard Tower. A freckled girl with braided hair and unusually high magical aptitude, she tells him without ceremony that talented people should stay together. Her advance knowledge of tower hazards, refusal to abandon him when other newcomers fear his enemies, and habit of saving him a seat turn that calculated introduction into a real friendship. When no fire mentor is available, she chooses metal as her principal element and studies under Gudo, while Saul's coordinate method helps her master early spells. (Chapters 6–8, 11, 18, and 81)

Their rivalry remains affectionate but demanding. Keli advances to Second Rank Apprentice before Saul and reserves the neighboring room for him, then measures their progress through magic values, spells, study methods, and increasingly valuable gifts. Saul's casual birthday present matters because she had never received a gift celebrating her existence; she responds by remembering his birthday every year, bringing rare materials and bone runes while insisting he repay her in kind. Her blunt warnings, including advice about curses, dangerous seniors, and suspicious letters, repeatedly give Saul practical protection without asking him to become less ambitious. Alpha research and the tower revolt

Under Gudo's influence, Keli combines her metal affinity with toxin research. Early accidents leave her skin and hair metallic and force her into armor, but she treats the condition as experimental data rather than a reason to retreat. Working from an idea Saul supplied, she develops the radioactive toxin Alpha and gives him its first sealed sample as a birthday necklace before she has even finished an antidote. In Gudo's crowded laboratory she becomes an informal senior among the apprentices, applying Alpha derivatives to the adhesive meant to bind souls to resurrection vessels and pursuing the work despite Saul's growing suspicion that the tower's great experiment will end violently. The revolt proves both the value and the cost of that research. A soul-targeting radioactive attack contaminates Keli so deeply that her body becomes encased in gold-like metal, but she leaves enough theoretical guidance for Saul, Byron, and the coerced Jero to devise counter-radiation treatment while the tower collapses around them. After awakening, she refuses a simple cleansing. She deliberately retains and integrates controlled residual radiation into the locator she needs for her next advancement, accepting long-term risk to gain resistance and a new research path. Saul supports the choice with a refining formation, life-preserving preparations, and notes on radioactive metals, while Byron guards her recovery when Saul departs for the Borderland. Kema obligations and Purity Tower research

Years later, Keli is a First Rank Wizard living at Kema's royal palace, where Kira has positioned her as the duchy's only near-term Second Rank candidate and prospective Marchioness. Keli feels indebted to Kira and responsible for her family, yet court paperwork and ceremonial dress visibly compete with the laboratory life she wants. Saul offers to remove the external threat and give her a free choice; Kira privately agrees that Keli belongs in research, and Keli relinquishes the title to her brother before leaving with Saul. The decision does not sever her loyalty to Kema, but it ends political office as the price of her magical growth. (Chapters 712–714)

At Caugust, Keli demonstrates why Saul trusts her in the field. Though still First Rank, she disintegrates poisonous Inverted Tree branches across a thirty-meter area with a radiation spell comparable to a Second Rank attack, then remains to support Saul's auxiliary formation instead of accepting evacuation. At the Purity Wizard Tower she studies the Inertization Formula with Byron, advances to Second Rank, and develops radiation that breaks active Black Tide pollution into inert powder. Her result is more efficient than Saul and Byron's apparatus, but her desire to test increasingly dangerous bone fragments also shows the stubborn experimental appetite that Saul must sometimes restrain. Continental wars and the Chaos Realm siege

Keli's loyalty to Kira brings her back into continental conflict. When a coded distress message reports that the resurrected Yura has seized Kema, Keli chooses to respond even while Saul faces pressure from the Tribunal. Saul supports her as readily as she has always supported him, arranging allies rather than asking her to abandon Kira. Keli brings Shaya into Kema, helps secure Kira, and later rides the Bone Dragon during the attack on Frim's Maze Corridor. Surrounded by recovering Tribunal wizards, she calmly resolves the corridor's folding pattern, drives the dragon through the correct dimensional angle, and helps break open the battlefield before withdrawing to keep the difficult creature under control. When Douglas seals the Chaos Realm away from the wizard world, Keli conceals the failed compass until she can consult Shaya, then takes command of the trapped coalition. She confirms the threat, assigns roles to Ann, Brando, Shaya, and Noah, rations the finite stock of magic crystals, and deploys the bone army against invading anchor-point monsters. The campaign lasts for months, forcing her to balance magical expenditure, pollution, morale, and the need to preserve a reserve commander. Once Saul reaches them, she releases the radiation power she had been conserving, strengthens the bone forces across the rift, and fights strongly enough that Saul judges her close to Third Rank. Long after the crisis and Saul's departure from the wizard world, Keli reaches Fourth Rank and takes over his top-floor laboratory. She keeps the Purity Wizard Tower outside ordinary power struggles, allowing apprentices to focus on knowledge while still facing the real dangers of wizardry. Her oldest private ritual also survives: on Saul's 123rd birthday she brings a candle-covered cake to his empty laboratory and makes the wish for him. Saul's unexpected return turns the memorial gesture into another shared birthday, closing their story on the friendship that began as an alliance between two new apprentices. (Chapter 1037)

Appearance and personality

Keli first appears as a freckled girl with braided hair, a simple blue dress, and an almost comically flat expression. Her metal experiments repeatedly alter her appearance: poisonous metal once leaks through gold-tinted skin, later her long red hair becomes hard, bright gold, and still later it returns to a flowing red while retaining a metallic luster. As an adult she favors practical black wizard robes over the court dress expected of Kema's prospective Marchioness; in battle, radiation can make her entire body appear bronze or like a metal sculpture. Blunt, competitive, and intensely curious, Keli often rolls her eyes, puffs her cheeks, or hides concern behind insults. She can be socially aloof in public but animated with Saul, and she treats dangerous experiments with a confidence that borders on recklessness. Her stubbornness is balanced by loyalty and practical judgment: she accepts retreat when an enemy's method is unknown, honors debts to Kira, conserves scarce crystals during a siege, and supports less advanced researchers such as Noah without condescension. Metal magic and bodily adaptation

Metal is Keli's chosen principal element and the foundation of both her combat and laboratory work. She manipulates poisonous and radioactive metals, constructs sealed isolation chambers, creates metal-refining formations, and can harden her own body into a defensive bronze state. The accidents that once left her immobile in armor become part of a deliberate adaptation strategy when she integrates residual Alpha radiation into her locator, turning bodily contamination into resistance and a platform for later advancement. Alpha and Alpha Plus radiation

Alpha begins as a sealed radioactive toxin whose effects Keli can target through waves rather than conventional contact. Its mature forms blacken and disintegrate living branches, break Black Tide pollution into stable inert particles, and can be shaped into liquid Alpha Plus powerful enough to delay a Third Rank pursuer. Keli later uses radiation to stimulate and coordinate large groups of bone monsters, combining an area effect with the army's physical attacks. Research, formations, and command

Keli learns procedures quickly, improves Gudo's soul-binding adhesive, and contributes to Saul and Byron's efforts against pollution. She can reproduce auxiliary fate formations, analyze a dimensional folding pattern under combat pressure, and help operate the Chaos Realm as a long-term experimental site. During the sealed-realm siege, her competence expands from laboratory leadership to strategic command: she controls information, evaluates spatial failures, assigns specialists, preserves magic-crystal reserves, and coordinates the bone army over an extended campaign. • Alpha Necklace: Keli's first finished Alpha sample is sealed inside a glass-ball pendant on a silver chain. She gives it to Saul as a birthday present and lets him name the toxin, making the necklace both a dangerous prototype and a marker of their research partnership. (Chapter 351)

• Chaos Realm Compass: Keli and Byron use the compass to establish a laboratory in the Chaos Realm and study bone monsters. • Saul: Keli chooses Saul as a peer because of his talent, then becomes his friend, rival, research partner, and most durable personal connection. They exchange methods and birthday gifts, save one another from political and magical crises, and preserve an unusually candid relationship across widening differences in rank. Saul enables her freedom from court obligations; Keli later maintains his tower and remembers his birthday throughout his absence. • Byron: Byron is both an older colleague and Keli's complementary research partner.
