Shaya

Shaya is a survival-obsessed thunder wizard whose elaborate precautions repeatedly fail in ways that force him into deeper danger. He first trades Saul the Evolution Diagram after Saul removes a dream wraith, then uncovers Bayton Academy's Inverted Tree conspiracy and is killed and assimilated by it. Saul eventually restores him as the tree's conscious core and makes him the first target of the Symphony of Fate. Shaya grows from a suspicious temporary ally into a dependable comrade, reaches Fourth Rank, and helps cleanse Iskaper after the final crisis. Biography

Cleaner work and the dream-wraith bargain

Shaya meets Saul in Caugust as a thin First Rank Wizard specializing in thunder magic and working as a Cleaner. His first response to unfamiliar teammates is to decide that Saul and Julie must be plotting against him and abandon a simple wraith hunt. That reflex is intensified by two years without safe sleep: a hidden dream wraith draws him into a marching crowd, devours captured spirits through his dreams, and leaves him increasingly exhausted, volatile, and convinced that every relationship could become an assassination attempt. (Chapters 468 and 471–475)

Saul recognizes that the paranoia has a magical cause and enters Shaya's dream despite the defensive formations surrounding them. Destroying the parasite gives Shaya natural sleep for the first time in years and wins a wary measure of trust. In return, Shaya transfers the Evolution Diagram, whose cycle of specter, human, monster, light, and specter closely complements Saul's Erosion Diagram. The transaction establishes their lasting pattern: Shaya protects every escape route and assumes betrayal, while Saul answers with dangerous but effective treatment that creates obligations neither describes as friendship. The Inverted Tree conspiracy

Shaya's suspicions become useful when he traces charred wraiths that keep ordinary citizens working until their bodies collapse. He recruits Saul and Julie under a Secret Word Contract, prepares a teleportation exit, and follows the pollution underground because he believes Bayton Academy may eventually use the same system against wizards. The investigation reveals that Dean Pond, Kent, and the academy are feeding the Inverted Tree. Shaya refuses Pond's demand that he become an official mentor and activates an emergency body-carried teleport despite the risk of being torn apart by a spatial rift. (Chapters 481–491)

The escape costs Shaya his limbs and delivers him into Bethstana's hands. Beth burns away his body, waters the remaining shell, and sends the resulting puppet back as an academy mentor. Shaya survives because he had prepared for the possibility of dying and being enslaved: an independent strand of consciousness remains within the roots. When ordered to pursue Saul, he instead reveals the assignment, offers stored wraiths and intelligence, and asks for eventual rescue. His caution has not prevented death, but it preserves enough agency to negotiate from inside the creature that killed him. (Chapters 492 and 499–501)

Rebirth as the first Symphony target

Years later, Saul finds Shaya's displaced spirit through a moon-like intermediary and treats the pollution separating his soul from the Inverted Tree. Shaya steals the tree seed, returns to confront Bethstana, and uses a severed anchor-point tooth supplied by Saul to contaminate her resurrection ritual. The confrontation also exposes the Wishing Candle, a cursed tool Beth had taken from him. Its wishes produce desperately needed objects, but every use distorts the user's temperament; Shaya's long paranoia and Beth's despair are both amplified by its influence. Saul absorbs Bethstana into the diary, places Shaya in the abandoned tree heart, and returns the Wishing Candle without using it. Shaya accepts control of the roots, stops the citywide sacrifice, and calms the starving tree. Saul then adapts the pentagram of Death Weaving into the Symphony of Fate, linking Shaya's changing destiny to his own fate line. The Inverted Tree reshapes Shaya into a rooted body, making him the first Symphony target and giving him a stable path forward without pretending that the new form is an ordinary human resurrection. The new body immediately exposes Shaya to the enormous pollution left by Bethstana's sacrifice, so Saul cleanses him and limits future mass absorption. Shaya responds with practical gratitude, giving Saul elf spring water obtained through the candle while attempting to pass along some of its danger. Once the tree stabilizes, the connection remains active across continents. What began as a rescue bargain therefore becomes part of Saul's advancement structure and the basis for Shaya's own gradual integration with a powerful otherworldly organism. (Chapters 743–748)

Fate partner, comrade, and coastal guardian

Shaya later communicates with Saul through the Prismatic Channel and becomes the first person Saul calls when distant coordination is essential. He sends a separable rooted body to accompany Keli into Kema, carries messages during the struggle against Yura and Frim, and helps watch the duchy's unstable political situation. The work is not altruistic in its beginning—Shaya still thinks first about survival and what Saul may demand—but repeated cooperation lets him function as a trusted member of a group rather than an isolated wizard preparing to sacrifice any pursuer behind him. When the Chaos Realm is sealed, Shaya's Symphony connection becomes the defenders' only secure link to Saul. Explicitly Third Rank by this period, he keeps the contact secret, relays Keli's reports, helps analyze the failed compass, and prepares the rooted forces for battle. He later volunteers to enter the great rift rather than leave Keli and the others to spend their power while he waits safely in reserve. Saul's arrival through Shaya's fate coordinates confirms how far their original medical transaction has developed: Shaya is now both a strategic anchor and a comrade willing to fight for others. Ninety-nine years after Saul is sent into the starry sky, Shaya's Inverted Tree remains rooted on Iskaper's northern coast. Gorsa's dangerous assignment to absorb pollution within a hundred miles pressures him into continued growth, and he reaches Fourth Rank before Byron. He still keeps the Wishing Candle and briefly considers wishing Saul home, showing that its shortcut remains tempting and that its emotional damage may not be fully reversible. Byron extinguishes the flame, and Shaya instead senses Saul's returning fate line through the bond they created. (Chapters 1036–1037)

Appearance and personality

Shaya first appears as an exceptionally thin man who keeps several meters between himself and everyone else. Lightning sparks move across his body without burning him, and prolonged sleeplessness leaves him pale, tense, and physically depleted. After the Inverted Tree kills him, he can appear as a humanoid bundle of roots or a damaged spirit body. Saul's reconstruction gives him a human-shaped torso and limbs, but visible roots extend from the body while hidden threads run through his organs, emerge through his skull, and connect him to the larger tree. (Chapters 468, 471–475, 492, 499–500, and 740–743)

Paranoid, caustic, and ingenious, Shaya habitually assumes that companions, institutions, and even helpful treatments conceal traps. Some of that temperament predates the Wishing Candle, while repeated use magnifies it into a lasting distortion. His fear of death produces cowardly retreats, harsh contracts, concealed weapons, and unusually thorough backup plans; it also makes him alert to conspiracies others dismiss. After joining the Symphony, gratitude and shared danger gradually widen his loyalties. Thunder magic and field control

Shaya specializes in thunder magic, giving him strong attack power and a natural advantage against ordinary wraiths. Sparks cover his body, his spells can control a battlefield, and even colleagues who mock his fear acknowledge that betraying him directly is dangerous. He combines that force with covert investigation, magical markers, teleportation preparations, Secret Word Contracts, and hidden escape routes. His combat style is therefore less a straightforward duel than an attempt to decide where danger will occur and ensure that he has already prepared a way out. (Chapters 468, 471, 481–491)

Inverted Tree body

As the Inverted Tree's conscious core, Shaya can direct its vast roots, create or separate a humanoid body, enter the tree heart space, absorb pollution, and control groups of root-linked beings. The rooted network supplies durability, survival, and spatial talent through the tree heart, but its scale demands immense magic and mental power. Heavy soul absorption creates dangerous pollution, while movement away from the main tree is awkward enough that Shaya jokes about the difficulty of traveling while being a tree. Later integration lets him act at Third and Fourth Rank without losing the tree-based structure. (Chapters 499–501, 729–743, 879, 898, 1008–1016, and 1037)

Fate communication and support

The Symphony link carries information through Saul's fate lines even when conventional space, magic tools, and the Chaos Realm compass fail. Shaya can serve as Saul's coordinate, messenger, and remote witness, allowing strategic communication across sealed regions. Changes in Shaya's destiny provide power to Saul, while Saul's later feedback completes the integration of Shaya's soul and rooted body. The connection does not erase Shaya's independence: he argues, withholds, volunteers for danger, and continues making his own choices while occupying a structural place in Saul's advancement. • Evolution Diagram: Shaya owns a dark-compatible meditation diagram depicting an endless cycle among specter, human, monster, and light. He trades it to Saul after Saul removes the dream wraith, giving Saul an essential complement to the Erosion Diagram and a foundation later connected to his soul and fate research. • Wishing Candle: This cursed elf candle produces an object capable of answering a wish, but distorts the user's emotions and forces its existence to be disclosed when questioned. • Saul: Saul removes Shaya's dream wraith, receives the Evolution Diagram, later cleanses his enslaved spirit, and rebuilds him around the Inverted Tree. Their bargains always contain self-interest, but the Symphony makes their fates structurally connected without removing Shaya's agency. Shaya becomes Saul's messenger, remote coordinate, and comrade; Saul's return is the event he most wants to force with the candle and finally senses without using it. • Keli: Saul assigns Shaya to accompany Keli during the Kema intervention and later into the Chaos Realm. Keli trusts him with the failure of the compass and uses his fate connection as their hidden link to Saul. During the siege, they divide command and high-consumption combat duties, and Shaya's decision to take a turn in the rift reflects the comradeship he has developed with her group. • Bethstana: Bethstana kills Shaya's body, enslaves his roots, and takes the Wishing Candle, but his prepared soul independence allows him to undermine her later. Shaya steals the tree seed, returns with Saul's anchor tooth, and helps ruin her resurrection sacrifice. • Byron: Byron works beside Shaya during the long recovery of Iskaper and nearly reaches the rank Shaya attains first. In the epilogue, he understands the danger of Shaya's candle well enough to extinguish it directly, preventing an emotionally driven attempt to recall Saul and treating the older curse as a continuing risk rather than a harmless keepsake.
