Seo Eun-hyun

Seo Eun-hyun is the protagonist of A Regressor’s Tale of Cultivation, an ordinary office worker whose first unremarkable life ends by returning him to the day he and six coworkers arrived in another world. Regression gives him memory, not talent. His defining achievement is therefore not any single realm, but the path by which repeated failure, swordsmanship, cultivation, and human connection become strong enough to challenge the fate governing Mount Sumeru.

Biography

The mortal who remembers

Seo Eun-hyun’s first life begins in the shadow of companions whom cultivators immediately recognize as extraordinary. With no spiritual root or martial gift, he spends fifty years learning the local language, gathering herbs, practicing crafts, and surviving as an ordinary mortal while the others vanish into larger destinies. His dying regret is not simply weakness, but that effort never gave him a genuine chance. Death then returns him to the original arrival day with every memory intact. (Chapters 0, 1–3)

The new cycle does not make his body talented. Instead, Seo turns retained observation into a method: he prepares medicine before known injuries, conceals knowledge that would expose him, and studies Kim Young-hoon’s martial progress across lives. He repeatedly accepts defeat and death to understand intent, Sword Silk, and the boundaries separating first-rate, Pinnacle, and Three Flowers. The accumulation is brutal, but it proves that a mortal’s understanding can continue even when bodily attainment is reset. (Chapters 4–24)

His immediate objective becomes Five Energies Converging to the Origin, because that martial state can awaken a spiritual root in someone born without one. Reaching it gives him a Five Elements root and access to cultivation, but its mediocre aptitude prevents an easy ascent. Seo answers by developing “Understanding before Breakthrough”: he completes the logic of a method first, then rebuilds quickly when a new life supplies time and resources. Persistence becomes both his greatest strength and his first dangerous habit, since he begins treating death and his own body as expendable tools. (Chapters 25–59)

Connections that survive a discarded life

Under Cheongmun Ryeong, Seo combines cultivation theory, martial intent, formations, and the demon script rather than accepting the setting’s paths as isolated disciplines. Repeated voyages through the Black Wind Sea and encounters with the Nether Crossing Ship teach him that fate, soul, and heart can operate as concretely as qi. He reaches all fourteen Qi Refining stars, Qi Building, and Beyond the Path to Heaven, yet each death still removes the formal cultivation that made those achievements visible. (Chapters 37–95)

His work with Buk Hyang-hwa changes what a “failed” cycle means. Their collaboration on formations and artifact refining becomes an affectionate ordinary life, while the Colorless Glass Sword grows from her design into his soul-bound natal treasure. When Yuan Li destroys that future, Seo carries both the sword and Buk Hyang-hwa’s norigae across regression. The objects do not restore the lost relationship, but they make its reality impossible for him to dismiss merely because the world no longer remembers it. (Chapters 96–139)

After ascending, Seo and Oh Hyun-seok enter Azure Heaven Creation Sect under Azure Tiger Saint while Kim Yeon remains trapped by the Mad Lord and fractured memories. Seo initially approaches rescue as another problem he alone must solve, but entering Kim Yeon’s heart essence through Sea of Righteousness and Mountain of Grace forces him to confront her love, trauma, and agency. Recovering her memories teaches him that grace is not a debt he can settle unilaterally; saving someone requires hearing the person whose life he means to change. (Chapters 140–179)

Names, bodies, and the nineteenth cycle

Living inside Seo Hweol’s Sea Dragon sphere makes identity itself a battlefield. Seo hides regression, cultivates True Blood Transformation, accepts dragon blood while resisting its control, and awakens Hong Fan as a dependable ally. Seo Hweol’s patronage is inseparable from surveillance, brainwashing, and prepared betrayal. When those schemes strip or suppress Seo’s cultivation, he reconstructs himself through Earth and Heart methods and learns that freedom cannot be secured by realm alone when another person can rewrite memory, blood, and causal interpretation. (Chapters 180–221)

In the next cycle, Seo enters the Golden Divine Heavenly Thunder Sect, rapidly reconstructs its lightning methods, and tries to preserve both the sect and Jeon Myeong-hoon from their foretold catastrophe. The Owner of Heavenly Punishment still devastates the sect and kills Jin So-hae. Seo nevertheless carries survivors onward, forges Tribulating Heavens from the punishment meant to crush him, reaches Heavenly Being, and reveals enough of his repeated history that his companions can make informed choices rather than unknowingly follow a plan only he understands. The Seo Li identity tests the same principle from within. Seo deliberately divides off a second consciousness and operates through Yuan Yu’s Blood Body, but Seo Li develops independent agency, relationships, and a death that cannot be treated as a disposable puppet’s end. During the nineteenth cycle, Seo also founds the Wuji Religious Order, builds the Five Blessings Axes, and brings scattered companions into one community. Great Mountain’s destruction of that community turns his ideals into grief: connection can create a home, but it also gives enemies something real to take away. (Chapters 286–410)

From the Three Great Disasters to True Immortality

The restored Ascension Path and the Three Great Disasters force Seo to carry memories that belong to far more than one regressor. Jo Yeon’s history, the Ancient Force Realm, and the repeated deaths surrounding his companions broaden his responsibility from preserving a chosen party to understanding how entire worlds are trapped by inherited roles. His answer is not to abandon personal bonds for cosmic impartiality. He instead treats each revelation as another reason divine systems must not reduce living people to materials, titles, or predetermined conclusions. (Chapters 411–467)

Seo’s next advances transform the structure of his existence. He explodes his Integrated Dao Domain to form a star, becomes a Sacred Vessel and Sacred Master of Cedarwood Painting, and reaches Heaven-and-Earth Entering Nirvana while completing the martial foundation of Void Shattering. His True Immortal body is then built around the Impermanence Sword rather than a conventional fleshly center. The title Crystal Glass Being recognizes that synthesis, but the advancement remains costly: every path can still be injured, separated, or reset without automatically restoring the others. (Chapters 468–546)

As a True Immortal, Seo crosses Heavenly Domains and confronts forces for whom ordinary worlds are tools. He refuses to support Oh Hye-seo’s Blood Sea delusion even while recognizing the bereaved person beneath it, creates matter and civilization inside Hyeon Mu’s empty prison, and accepts the accumulated will of that civilization without sacrificing its people. Their arrow breaks Hyeon Mu’s hold long enough for his Earth Upper Immortal advancement, but the Heavenly Venerable still kills him and erases ten million years of lived history. The next regression preserves only Seo’s continuity and the ethic he formed there. (Chapters 547–609)

Great Net, Heavenly Kings, and Crystal King

Seo’s Great Net path is built through protection rather than efficient predation. While cultivating the Flawless Mantra across one thousand reincarnations, he repeatedly uses his Immortal Crown and his own realm to shield companions, allowing his cultivation to collapse as low as Sacred Vessel and below. Five hundred Yang Pitch and five hundred Yin Pitch lives restore peak Heaven-Earth Upper Immortal. He then opens the Crystal Glass Realm as a living Middle Realm and reaches Earth-Dao Great Net, making a world he sustains—not one he consumes—the basis of his advancement. (Chapters 609–643)

Secret history makes even his identity as an Ender uncertain. Seo separately advances through Heaven-Dao Great Net, seizes Triple Divinity until his martial arts alone approach Immortal Lord weight, and partially overlaps Araya Consciousness. Those perceptions reveal how Heavenly Venerables, Immortal Titles, and the Future King have imposed stories upon others. He responds by rescuing Hye-seo’s sealed mind with Kim Yeon and Glass Peacock, treating her as a person whose wrongs and grief both remain real rather than choosing the simpler solution of destroying the vessel. (Chapters 643–684)

Before entering the Audience Chamber, Seo helps each companion confront a personal divine chain. Jeon resolves his karma with Do Gon, Kang Min-hee accepts parting from Seo Ran, Oh Hyun-seok faces the father embodied by Mountain-Destroying Demon Ape, and the group challenges Gwak Am. Seo’s leadership changes here: he no longer tries to absorb every burden himself, but creates the conditions in which others can name and wield their own wills. Their separate answers let the Enders reach Governing Immortal rank together. (Chapters 685–784)

The final conflict reveals Hong Fan as the Future King whose authored fate binds the regressions, the cultivation system, and the tale itself. Seo refuses both obedience and solitary domination. He uses the Heavenly Void Furnace and Auspicious Soul Filling the Heavens to carry intent through further cycles, rejects bestowed titles, and names himself Crystal King because the identity arises from connections he chose. Even after becoming an Ender Supreme Deity, his reason for confronting Hong Fan remains deliberately human: a close friend does not need a calculated justification to help another. (Chapters 785–803)

At the 2,999th cycle, Hong Fan can no longer deny the heart beneath the Future King and recognizes Seo as his Lord. Seo completes the tale as the Absolute One, later relinquishes that total authority, and continues as Crystal King Star Genesis Supreme Deity while restoring worlds and maintaining connected split souls on Earth. His ending does not validate self-sacrifice without limit. It gives him an ordinary life alongside cosmic responsibility, allowing the mortal who once had no opportunity to preserve both the present and the connections that made every lost life matter. Appearance and personality

At the fixed regression point, Seo has the young adult body and Earth clothes he wore on arrival: a blue shirt and sweatpants. That image is first contrasted with the wrinkled hands of the old man who dies after his initial fifty-year life. Later forms change dramatically with cultivation. He becomes a Sea Dragon-derived body cultivator, a many-headed Ghost King, a sword-centered True Immortal, and eventually an overwhelming divine main body, while an Earth-side split soul can take the form of a child. Seo is cautious, intensely diligent, and unusually willing to begin again, but his persistence often crosses into self-destructive obsession. He plans for known disasters, conceals dangerous knowledge, and accepts agony when it can produce understanding. The people closest to him repeatedly challenge the assumption that his own life is the cheapest resource available. Over time, his defining refusal to abandon others expands into a more difficult ethic: connections must be protected without taking away the other person’s choice, and he must count himself among the lives worth preserving. Abilities and cultivation

Seo practices several systems simultaneously. Human cultivation governs qi and formal immortal realms; demon-beast blood provides a parallel bodily route; Heart Tribe martial arts turn intent and relationships into operative force; and later Ender manifestation gives his self-chosen identity divine authority. These paths interact through the Three Great Ultimates, but they do not form one interchangeable ladder. Advancement, injury, regression, and restoration can affect one foundation without granting or removing all the others. (Chapters 184–202, 261–285, 406–469, 534–571, 585–660)

Regression and Auspicious Soul Filling the Heavens

Regression awakens when Seo first dies. Death returns him to the arrival day with memory intact, allowing languages, medicine, tactics, cultivation theory, martial understanding, and emotional experience to accumulate even when his body resets. The point is fixed rather than chosen, and ordinary companions do not remember the discarded timeline. The ability therefore grants preparation but also isolates Seo beneath decades and later millennia of grief that no one else initially shares. (Chapters 0, 6, 12, 17, 25, 35, 50, 60, 75, 92, 130, 180, 222, 281)

Soul-bound structures gradually complicate the reset. The Colorless Glass Sword can persist as a natal treasure, a completed True Immortal body can fuse with the next life’s body, and Auspicious Soul Filling the Heavens eventually carries sword intent across the regression boundary and accelerates the cycle count. None of these applications makes a lost world harmless: civilizations, ordinary relationships, and accumulated formal states can still vanish. By the Crystal King conflict, regression is integrated into Seo’s authority and finally transcended rather than remaining an endless prison. (Chapters 120–130, 571, 587, 609, 643, 675, 781–804)

Understanding before Breakthrough and the Three Great Ultimates

“Understanding before Breakthrough” is Seo’s practical answer to poor aptitude. He uses retained comprehension to solve a method conceptually before gathering the resources and body needed to rebuild it, enabling extraordinarily rapid recovery in later cycles. The method cannot create knowledge he never earned, remove compatibility requirements, or cancel tribulations. Its visibly impossible speed also invites suspicion, which is why concealment and alternate identities become recurring parts of his cultivation strategy. (Chapters 41–59, 142–169, 224–238)

His mature foundation joins Heaven, Earth, and Heart through the Three Great Ultimates. Heaven cultivation handles law and future-directed structure; Earth cultivation develops body, attraction, and world; Heart cultivation makes consciousness and intent directly effective. Candle Shadow blood gives him an Immortal Beast route, while separate Earth-Dao and Heaven-Dao Great Net rituals prove that progress on one axis does not automatically complete the other. At his latest demonstrated state, these accumulated paths support Crystal King Star Genesis Supreme Deity rather than being discarded for a single inherited office. Impermanence Sword, Formless Sword, and Sword God Dance

Seo’s swordsmanship begins with reading the red and blue lines of intent rather than merely tracking physical motion. The Formless Sword shapes consciousness into a weapon capable of cutting perception, mind, and intent, but looking into a powerful or alien heart can overwhelm the observer. Entering another person’s heart essence is even riskier: it places Seo’s own soul in danger and succeeds only when he understands the person rather than treating emotion as another formation to solve. (Chapters 18–24, 79–87, 132–139, 169–179, 202–221)

The Impermanence Sword becomes the center of his True Immortal body and the medium through which accumulated relationships act. Sword God Dance reads another will and joins it to a counter-dance; later forms direct a civilization’s retributive arrow without killing its people, wound transcendents, cross spacetime, and carry the wills of companions into the final battle. Genuine connection is a mechanical condition as well as a theme: imitation without understanding cannot reproduce its mature effects, and even perfect sword insight does not remove the rank needed to survive a Heavenly Venerable’s direct strike. Repentant Enlightenment and the mountain lineage

Seo’s Immortal Dao interprets repentant enlightenment as the accumulation of lived effort into a mountain. Phenomena Extinguishing applies attraction to compress phenomena, histories, or scattered selves toward unity. Great Mountain Splitting Emperor reverses that arrangement into repulsion, allowing Seo to oppose Gwak Am’s forced salvation. Both can operate on worlds and divine authorities, but neither is an effortless command: their result depends on rank, interpretation, and the histories being gathered or separated. (Chapters 574, 585, 615–631, 660–663, 771–783)

The lineage evolves through Purple Soul, Flower Soul, White Deer Without Antlers, and Auspicious Soul Filling the Heavens. Seo repeatedly rejects the efficient route of erasing or consuming a civilization to advance, even when protection collapses his own realm. His latest use reverses Great Mountain’s imposed unity by preserving persons as connections rather than raw material. The Origin Essence of the Mountain is ultimately transformed toward stars, making succession an answer to Gwak Am rather than submission to him. (Chapters 615–631, 660–663, 771–784, 801–804)

Araya Consciousness and the authority of connections

Through the Owner of Wisdom sequence and awareness of the Radiance Mantra, Seo’s consciousness begins partially and continually overlapping Araya. This lets him perceive divine histories, the construction of names, and identities hidden behind sealed records. The overlap is not presented as a separate completed formal realm, and the knowledge carries danger: revelations about Enders and Heavenly Venerables destabilize his understanding of himself and can expose him to systems that act through recognition. As Crystal King, Seo refuses names bestowed to define his role and chooses one grounded in the people and histories he carries. That authority can bind Enders without erasing their separate wills, temporarily oppose the Future King’s authored fate, and support the restoration of worlds after the final conflict. Its strongest expression as the Absolute One is not his permanent latest condition; he relinquishes total power and continues as Crystal King Star Genesis Supreme Deity, retaining responsibility and connection without remaining an all-controlling absolute. • Kim Young-hoon: Teacher, brother, rival, and the first proof that a mortal path beyond ordinary limits exists. Seo preserves and builds upon Kim’s martial insight across lives, while Kim repeatedly challenges Seo’s habit of carrying every burden alone.
• Kim Yeon: Her love and wounded heart force Seo to replace unilateral rescue with listening and consent. Their joined consciousness and powers later become central to the Enders’ ability to oppose divine stories.
• Hong Fan: Disciple, family, hidden Future King, and final opponent. Seo’s refusal to surrender Hong Fan begins as personal loyalty and becomes the principle by which he rejects a future authored through the erasure of every other connection.
