Madam Tillen

Madam Tillen is the Barbarians' chief wizard and one of Pirates' Cove's principal brokers. Her shop, information network, bloodline magic, and relationship with Odge place her at the center of the pirates' alliance with Leylin Farlier and their later war against him.

Biography

Broker of Pirates' Cove

Tillen receives Leylin while negotiating the disposition of Karen, whose ransom and slave contract make her both merchandise and a source of leverage. She recognizes that Leylin is more dangerous than an ordinary young noble, cures Karen's poison, removes the slave contract, and has the visitor investigated before revealing her ties to the Barbarians. When Leylin returns, Tillen presents Odge as her lover and captain while making clear that she already knows Leylin's family, magical talent, and covert piracy. The exchange turns mutual suspicion into a practical alliance: the Barbarians have fighters and sea power, while Leylin supplies wizardry, intelligence, and weapons against Marquis Louis. The Pirates' Tide

As cooperation expands into the Pirates' Tide, Tillen serves as the magical and informational complement to Odge's direct force. She transmits reports, helps coordinate Barbarian movements, and recognizes Boruj's Death Cloud quickly enough to warn the warriors on the captured ship. During the ambush she uses her fox-blooded bewitchment against William, briefly clouding his attention until Boruj counters it with a calming effect. She also presents Tears of Tigersharks, supplied as part of the allied operation, after it neutralizes the enemy's shark forces. The campaign destroys Louis's naval advantage, but it also helps Leylin build the commercial and military base that will later squeeze the Barbarians out of the outer seas. (Chapters 844–850)

Choosing Odge's war

Years later, Faulen trade, fleets, and wizard defenses have made another Pirates' Tide impossible. A devil named Neville offers the Barbarians aid against Leylin. Tillen recognizes what he is, erects an isolation formation after his departure, and argues against accepting a devil's bargain. Odge refuses retreat because the Barbarian people depend on him, and Tillen chooses loyalty to him despite her warning. High-ranked communication magic brings further intelligence from Cyric's priesthood, but information cannot correct the strategic imbalance. Her decision is therefore conscious rather than naïve: she knows both Neville and Leylin are terrifying and remains because abandoning Odge would betray the person and people to whom she has bound herself. Death beside her lover

When Leylin's fleet attacks, Tillen prepares magic to amplify Odge while he fights Isabel. Leylin intercepts her before she can change that duel, using Mage's Sword to pierce her defenses and body. Mortally wounded, she summons enough strength to crawl to Odge after Isabel destroys his saber and heart. Tillen dies holding his hand, and the Barbarian force collapses after losing both its captain and chief wizard. The alliance she once negotiated has thus reversed completely: Leylin's rise consumes the independent pirate power that helped begin it. (Chapters 932–933)

Appearance and personality

Tillen is an attractive, apparently ageless fox woman with long legs and a fiery-red tail. She uses flirtation deliberately, shifting between mature allure and girlish innocence to unsettle or distract the people across a negotiation. Her bloodline charm makes that presentation more than theater.

Behind it she is observant, commercially ruthless, and exceptionally well informed. She researches Leylin before exposing her position, recognizes dangerous magic during battle, and senses the threat in Neville before Odge commits to his proposal. Her caution is genuine, but it is not stronger than her devotion to Odge. The tenderness she shows him during their first negotiation and at their deaths makes that loyalty a sustained choice rather than a sudden final gesture. (Chapters 830–849 and 928–933)

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

Fox bloodline and bewitchment

Tillen possesses a fox-derived bloodline expressed physically through her tail and magically through charm. Her bewitching spell works through her alluring presence and gaze, causing William's attention to blur in the middle of a confrontation. Boruj breaks the effect with Calm, establishing that mental stabilization or counter-magic can interrupt it. The corpus does not identify her exact Professional level or bloodline ancestry, so her charm should not be expanded into an assumed suite of illusion powers. (Chapter 849)

Wizardry, formations, and support magic

As the Barbarians' chief wizard, Tillen can establish an isolation spell formation after Neville leaves, preventing the ensuing conversation from being observed, and receive high-ranked magical communications. In the final battle she prepares amplification magic intended to strengthen Odge rather than attack directly. She also recognizes Death Cloud by its effects and warns allies to avoid the poisonous area. Recognition does not mean she cast or controlled Boruj's spell, and Leylin's ability to pierce her defenses demonstrates the limit of her protective magic against a much stronger wizard. Intelligence and commercial operations

Tillen combines magical communications with a network spanning pirates, traders, Barbarian leadership, and the covert economy of Pirates' Cove. She verifies Leylin's identity from sparse public clues, arranges Karen's release, and brings decision-makers together without disclosing more than a negotiation requires. These are organizational and social capabilities supported by her shop and faction. The Thieves' Guild, Barbarian scouts, Cyric's priests, and informants supply information; their abilities are not personal divination performed by Tillen. (Chapters 830–836 and 928–929)

Relationships

• Odge: Tillen's lover and Barbarian captain. She advises him against Neville but ultimately shares his war and dies at his side.
• Leylin Farlier: A dangerous client whom she turns into an ally through information and negotiation. His later expansion destroys the balance between them, and he kills her.
• Karen: Captive and subordinate whose poison, ransom, and contract Tillen resolves before transferring her to Leylin.
• Isabel: Enemy commander who defeats Odge while Leylin prevents Tillen from supporting him.

Items

• Tears of Tigersharks: An exquisite bottle used by the allied pirates to neutralize the Tigersharks before the ambush. Tillen displays it, but the operation's supply chain rather than her bloodline creates its effect. (Chapter 849)
