Karen

Biography

Enslaved half-drow

Karen is a half-drow follower of the Dark Maiden whose clan leaves the Underdark and is scattered in an attack. Poisoned and captured by Barbarians, she is passed off as a half-elf maid in Pirates' Cove and denied the right to buy her own freedom. Leylin Farlier identifies both her heritage and suppressed rank 5 assassin training. Karen swears to become his “dagger in the shadows,” and Madam Tillen later cures the poison and removes her slave contract as part of the alliance with Leylin (Chapters 829–835).

Loyal blade

Restored to rank 5, Karen uses Shadow Stealth and Cutthroat to execute a mutinous pirate, then serves the Scarlet Tigers as assassin, courier, intelligence handler, and liaison. She approaches Tim inside his residence and negotiates the betrayal that exposes William's routes and forces. Years of practice eventually raise her concealment to the level of some middle-ranked assassins, and by Chapter 928 she is assessed at rank 10 or above. During the later conflict with Cyric's church, she fights a high-ranked illusory puppet but only recognises the deception after Leylin destroys it (Chapters 835–946).

Connection to the Underdark

Karen's home remains part of Leylin's longer-term calculations. He recognizes that expanding into the Underdark would mean contesting faith with Lolth and other established gods, so the connection is not immediately pursued. (Chapter 989)

Appearance and personality

Karen has elven beauty, subtly drow-like eyes and ears, and later wears fitted black leather with a dagger holster at her thigh. She begins humiliated, poisoned, and desperate for escape. Her loyalty to Leylin becomes intense but is mixed with fear of abandonment and of his ruthlessness; she also learns to respect Isabel's authority after trying to speak beyond her place.

Magic, bloodline, and abilities

  • Assassin progression: Karen is a rank 5 assassin when recruited and later advances to at least rank 10. This is professional training developed over time, not power granted by serving Leylin (Chapters 829, 835, 842, 928).
  • Shadow Stealth: She can emerge noiselessly from concealment and approach guarded targets without detection. Leylin later judges her stealth comparable to some middle-ranked assassins (Chapters 835, 842).
  • Cutthroat and dagger combat: She combines stealth with a precise slash across the throat, killing Aeron before his allies can react. She can also duel another assassin or a high-ranked illusory puppet at close range (Chapters 835, 930).
  • Drow senses: Her half-drow heritage grants night vision and sensitivity to shadow particles, providing an aptitude for assassination and piracy. These senses do not automatically let her penetrate every illusion (Chapter 829).
  • Intelligence work: Her success with Tim and her courier work demonstrate infiltration and negotiation as well as violence. The wider Scarlet Tiger spy network remains an organizational resource rather than her personal supernatural ability (Chapters 842–845).

Relationships

  • Leylin Farlier: Master who secures her release and receives intense but fear-tinged loyalty in return.
  • Isabel: Scarlet Tigers commander under whom Karen serves and later survives Nightmare Island.
  • The Dark Maiden: Deity in whose name Karen swears her service; this faith distinguishes her from the Lolth-dominated Underdark.

Items

  • Dagger and thigh holster: Her characteristic close-combat weapon after her poison is cured. No unique magical property or proper name is stated (Chapters 833–835).
