The Shadow's Embrace Skill Scroll contains a lost Divine-rank technique tied to recreating the Timeless Assassin. Its physical recovery is a long-standing Cult objective, but the successful preservation of its knowledge and the failed recovery of the scroll are separate outcomes.

History

A succession requirement beyond the Cult's reach

The Cult of Ascension loses access to Shadow's Embrace before the supplied narrative begins, leaving the scroll inside the Black Serpents' heavily protected headquarters. The Third Shadow Corps knowingly attempts an infiltration despite considering the fortress effectively impenetrable, hoping that even failure will expose defenses a later team can overcome. Its destruction becomes another annual failure, and the elders conclude that without the technique they cannot convert their Dragon candidate into the next Timeless Assassin. A proposed kidnapping of Dupravel Nuna's son is rejected because the Universal Government would prevent an exchange, forcing the Cult toward infiltration rather than ransom. (Chapters 118–119)

A successful breach and failed retrieval

Leo gains legitimate access to the Black Serpents vault, memorizes the scroll's contents, and plants a dimensional portal frame for a Cult retrieval team. Jayden's force uses the opening to loot the wider vault, but the scroll remains protected behind seven defensive glass layers. When the alarm triggers, Jayden tries to remove its entire pedestal and dies after destroying the portal to keep Dupravel from following the escaping operatives. The Black Serpents retain the physical scroll, Leo's cover is exposed, and the Twelfth Elder's retrieval bargain collapses. Leo later reveals that he memorized the technique, preserving a path to learning it even though the artifact itself remains lost to the Cult. (Chapters 388–397)
