Twelfth Elder

The Twelfth Elder, whose name is Noir Ashburn, is the youngest and initially weakest-ranked member of the Cult of Ascension's Elders Council. A sworn brother of the previous Dragon, Noah Ashburn, he secretly directs Leo Skyshard toward the Black Serpents and later trains both Leo and Aegon Veyr. His genuine concern for the Cult and talent for instruction become inseparable from an ambition to control a Dragon, culminating in the abuse of Luke Skyshard, his own execution, and the public continuation of his identity by Chaosbringer.

Biography

Handler of the hidden Dragon candidate

Noir first presents Leo to the Council not as an established candidate but as an amnesiac infiltrator whose erased past lets him pass beneath Righteous scrutiny. He candidly gives the plan only a sixty-percent chance of securing Black Serpents recruitment and admits that stealing Shadow's Embrace afterward is uncertain, arguing that the operation risks one operative rather than provoking a war through hostage-taking. The Council chooses the kidnapping proposal instead. Noir accepts the vote but leaves grieving Noah and the Cult's retreat from cultivating a successor toward reactive violence, which makes his continued private investment in Leo both a strategic alternative and an attempt to restore the purpose he associates with his dead sworn brother. After Leo's success at the Inter-School Circuits, Noir obtains the First Elder's formal permission to keep grooming him while concealing his pre-Rodova history. He wants Leo hidden until the Transcendent Realm because Noah's death has convinced him that internal betrayal can be more dangerous than the Cult's enemies. That caution breaks when the Fourth Elder presents Veyr and disparages comparisons to Noah: Noir reveals Leo to the Council, describes the memory erasure and Righteous serum strategy, and stakes his credibility on Leo's Divine or Semi-Divine potential. His protection is therefore never neutral. It preserves Leo from rival patrons, but also establishes Noir's claim over which faction will benefit if the candidate becomes Dragon. The delayed scroll plan finally advances when Leo creates access to the Black Serpents' treasury. Noir mobilizes Cult personnel, procures a dimensional portal point, and insists that Leo visit Tithia before his family, dismissing Mu Fan's warning because candidate grooming belongs to the Council. The recovery team removes other treasure but cannot breach the scroll's seven protective layers; Officer Jayden remains behind and is lost while the portal closes. Noir initially treats the failure as a threat to his career and berates the survivors, then uses Leo's claim that he memorized the scroll as political leverage. The physical scroll is not recovered, and the Council receives Noir's report of memorization rather than an independently demonstrated reconstruction of the technique. Once Veyr becomes Dragon and Leo Shadow Dragon, Noir personally teaches them Shapeshift on Vorthas. His method uses calibrated pain, muscle isolation, water retention, mana control, and repeated anatomical configurations until the body obeys conscious direction; Leo completes the face, hair, voice, and posture work in roughly a month. Yet the same period exposes the coercion beneath Noir's mentorship. His office secretly monitors Leo's home through Ben's body, he directs Mu Fan to repair inconsistencies in Luke's altered memories, and he had earlier ordered mercenaries to push Luke through life-and-death danger. He can produce technically excellent students, but treats their bodies, families, and information as assets he is entitled to manage. (Chapters 373 and 403; Chapters 475–503)

Conflict with the power he helped create

Noir's political value rises briefly through a crisis he cannot control. When Dupravel Nuna attacks Veyr's Vorthas procession, Noir enters the fight with Wind Slashes, uses Shapeshift to imitate Darnell and exploit Dupravel's paternal hesitation, and helps Veyr survive without matching the Monarch directly. Leo subsequently claims to have bound Dupravel under a life-linked contract. Noir accepts the supposed necessity of keeping his sworn brother's killer alive and prepares a false public execution, turning personal hatred into a narrative that protects Leo. The decision demonstrates his adaptability, but it also shows that the candidate he meant to command now determines which facts the Elder can safely reveal and which political story he must sell. Leo's two Monarch-tier followers deepen the Council's fear that the Shadow Dragon is becoming independent, while Mu Fan finally identifies the particular responsibility behind the Skyshard family's suffering. She distinguishes the First Elder's approval of surveillance from Noir's direct harm: Noir arranged Luke's year-long pursuit, pushed him into a coma, and helped alter the family's understanding of what happened. Leo therefore decides that removing Noir must not create an obvious vacancy. He has Chaosbringer study the Elder's behavior, speech, clothing, and schedule, then teaches him only the single Shapeshift form required to serve as a double. Noir's own training system and insistence on controlling another person's identity become the means by which Leo prepares to erase his public existence. (Chapters 555 and 571; Chapters 579–580)

Chaosbringer isolates Noir during a campaign appearance, Dupravel injects a fast paralytic, and Su Pei carries the unconscious Elder away while the double returns to the stage. In captivity Noir first invokes Council authority, then offers servitude and confesses when Leo confronts him with Mu Fan's testimony. He admits that the First Elder supported his rise after Noah's death, that he sought the First Elder's seat, and that controlling a personally cultivated Dragon appeared to be the only path to Cult-wide power. He also admits sending mercenaries after Luke and covering up the coma, although he insists the injury exceeded his intention. Leo reproduces Luke's wounds on him, abandons the idea of prolonged imprisonment, and decapitates him. (Chapters 580–585)

Noir's death does not end the office-holder seen by the public. Chaosbringer continues as “Twelfth Elder,” uses the inherited reputation and a staged confrontation with Dupravel to win three more planets, and is promoted to Seventh Elder. Soron senses the original Elder's death immediately and later identifies the replacement, while Charles learns the truth from Soron and confronts Leo. The distinction is essential: Noir never receives the later promotion, never becomes Leo's Council spy, and does not participate in the later internal government. Those acts belong to Chaosbringer operating under Noir's face; the original Twelfth Elder's latest physical state is death, even when later chapters use his former title for the impostor. Appearance and personality

Noir normally conducts Council and public business in ceremonial robes and a smooth mask that conceals his identity. When he removes it, Leo sees sharp, calculating eyes; during captivity, his loosened black hair and the authority he tries to project contrast with his inability to act without guards or mana. Shapeshift lets him abandon this appearance convincingly: his imitation of Darnell reproduces build, face, voice, and an anxious expression closely enough to make Dupravel hesitate despite knowing it is false. (Chapters 394–395, 489, and 581)

He begins as measured, candid about operational risk, and genuinely distressed by the Cult's loss of direction after Noah. He is also an able administrator who can negotiate wartime production while requiring hazard pay rather than treating workers as expendable. Ambition corrodes those qualities. Noir becomes vain about speeches, intolerant of advice, and increasingly willing to manipulate memories, relatives, and candidates to preserve his control. His final confession does not make him wholly insincere—Leo's aura reading supports his claim that he did not intend Luke's coma—but it confirms that political advancement mattered enough for him to keep escalating after the harm was apparent. Abilities and power progression

Noir is a Transcendent-tier warrior and the youngest, initially weakest Elder rather than a Monarch capable of imposing himself on the Cult's senior fighters. His development is shown less through realm breakthroughs than through specialized assassination craft, political command, and the ability to teach a bodily technique in reproducible stages. His final state is death before any later rank or power progression; Chaosbringer's subsequent political advancement under his appearance must not be counted as Noir's own.

Shapeshift mechanics and instruction

Shapeshift restructures the user's visible body through fine mana control, stored bodily water, isolated muscles, and deliberate changes to bone, tissue, proportions, hair, facial geometry, posture, and voice. Noir's facility trains the underlying control with machines that apply calibrated pain, oxygen deprivation, joint pressure, and muscle-specific strain. Students first reproduce individual body-part configurations, then integrate the face and behavioral performance. Leo and Veyr require weeks of this full training, while Noir can assume Darnell's form during combat and reproduce his voice precisely. The technique changes presentation rather than granting the copied person's rank or memories; Dupravel knows the figure is not his son and is delayed emotionally, not deceived about the underlying identity. Wind attacks and combat limits

Noir launches ranged Wind Slashes and Wind Shots during Dupravel's assault. The attacks are strong enough to force the Monarch to adjust and, combined with Veyr's defense, help prevent an immediate killing blow. They do not establish parity: Dupravel remains the central threat, while Noir relies on Veyr, guards, psychological deception, and public chaos rather than defeating him. His broader limit is the gap between a Transcendent Elder and Monarchs such as Charles, Dupravel, and Su Pei. Charles openly rejects his authority without fear, and once Dupravel catches Noir isolated, a fast paralysis needle prevents movement and mana circulation before Noir can mount a defense. Planning, administration, and control

Noir can build long-term infiltration plans, coordinate remote operatives through communication crystals, secure specialist devices, negotiate industrial output, and convert an operational setback into a politically usable account. These competencies make Leo's treasury access and Shapeshift training possible, but they have clear limits. He under-equips the scroll team for the protected casing, mistakes possession of leverage for loyalty, and delegates the cleanup of Luke's memories and Skyshard surveillance until Mu Fan turns against him. His latest strategic act is therefore involuntary: the schedules, clothes, mannerisms, and access produced by his own office supply the information Chaosbringer needs to replace him. Relationships

• Leo Skyshard: Noir erases Leo's past, sends him through Rodova and the Black Serpents, promotes him as a Dragon candidate, and later teaches him Shapeshift. His desire to own the result and his manipulation of the Skyshard family turn the student into his captor and killer.
• Luke Skyshard: Noir regards Luke as a second possible Dragon candidate and orders a year of life-threatening pressure intended to stimulate growth. Luke's coma and altered memories become the clearest evidence that Noir values a controllable candidate above the candidate's welfare.
• Noah Ashburn: Noah is Noir's sworn brother and former battlefield companion. Grief over his death motivates Noir's wish to cultivate a successor, his mistrust of the Council, and his hatred of Dupravel, but Noir later uses Noah's legacy to justify his own climb.
• First Elder: The First Elder sponsors Noir's entry into the Council and supports Leo's candidacy. Noir eventually recognizes that this patronage converted his intended reform into a reliable political vote, even as he continues cooperating with Mavern against Veyr's faction.
• Aegon Veyr: Veyr is initially the rival candidate threatening Noir's project, then becomes Dragon and trains beside Leo under Noir. Noir helps defend him from Dupravel because his office and the Cult require the Dragon's survival.
• Dupravel Nuna: Noir blames Dupravel for Noah's death and uses Darnell's appearance against him. Dupravel later helps Leo abduct Noir, reversing the Elder's earlier attempt to turn their feud into public political capital.
• Chaosbringer: Chaosbringer gains access as a flattering assistant, studies Noir, and replaces him through a single-form version of Shapeshift. Every appearance under the Twelfth or Seventh Elder title after Noir's death belongs to the impostor, not to Noir.
• Muiyan Faye: Mu Fan serves as Noir's operative and intermediary with Leo, but grows disgusted with the surveillance and memory manipulation he assigns. Her confession supplies Leo with the evidence that brings Noir down.

Items

• Ceremonial mask and robes: Noir uses formal dress to conceal his face within the Council and project office-holder authority in public. Chaosbringer later uses procured copies of his clothing as part of the replacement operation; the garments do not establish identity by themselves.
• Private communication crystal and data slate: These ordinary administrative tools carry field reports, candidate instructions, and Council messages. No unique magical property or confirmed later custody is established for either.
• Personal weapon: The corpus does not name a signature weapon for Noir. His demonstrated confrontation with Dupravel relies on wind techniques and Shapeshift rather than a sourced, named item.
