Valterri

Valterri Valtanen is Aegon Veyr's Shield, the son of the previous Dragon's guard and a protector determined not to repeat his father's failure.

Biography

Inheriting an unfinished duty

Valterri grows up beneath the memory of his father James, who died after urging him to protect the next Dragon better than he had protected Noah. Rather than seek revenge or recognition, Valterri trains to stand, endure, and guard, then accepts appointment as Veyr's Shield. During the Autumn Festival, his vigilance catches Dupravel Nuna's reflected movement when every other guard is distracted; he intercepts the poisoned dagger with his hand, saving Veyr at severe personal cost and proving the purpose he built his life around. (Chapters 469–491)

After recovering, Valterri continues accompanying Veyr through the Koral campaign. He helps conceal Veyr's unauthorized movements from Leo and remains silent when the plan succeeds, but his central duty does not change: Leo explicitly orders him to keep Veyr safe during the unstable surrender period. His latest established status is active service, with no later death or replacement recorded. (Chapters 501 and 545–548)

Appearance and personality

Valterri is tall, solemn, and initially sees an ordinary young man in the mirror rather than his father's legend. He wears a ceremonial breastplate and carries himself with vigilance, restraint, and self-doubt disciplined into duty. His unreadable silence also helps him protect Veyr's secrets. (Chapters 469, 487, and 548)

Abilities and power progression

Valterri's strongest demonstrated trait is protective perception: amid staged chaos, he scans reflections, detects the hidden throw, and catches a Monarch's dagger before it reaches Veyr. The poison still incapacitates and injures him, so the feat does not establish Monarch-equivalent strength or immunity. No cultivation tier, named technique, or later breakthrough is stated. (Chapters 487–491)

Relationships

  • Aegon Veyr is the Dragon Valterri swears to protect and saves during the assassination attempt. (Chapters 469–491 and 545–548)
  • James, Valterri's father and Noah's Shield, supplies both his model of duty and the failure he is determined not to repeat. (Chapter 469)
  • Dupravel Nuna killed James and later recognizes the resemblance when Valterri blocks his attack on Veyr. (Chapter 487)
  • Leo Skyshard recognizes Valterri's guard role and renews his order to protect Veyr. (Chapter 548)

Items

Valterri wears a ceremonial breastplate and keeps a fire-blackened fragment of his father's sword hilt as an amulet. The fragment is a memorial, not a demonstrated magical artifact. (Chapter 469)
