Casper

Casper is Jake Thayne's former coworker and one of the few survivors of their Tutorial. His transformation into a Risen turns an early talent for traps into a curse-centered combat path, while his dungeon profession and friendship with Jake make him an important technical and diplomatic figure for the Risen.

Biography

The Tutorial and First Paths

Casper enters the Tutorial as an R&D employee whom Jake already regards as a close acquaintance: both are introverted, share hobbies, and find ordinary social life difficult. Given an archer class despite never having handled a bow, Casper supports the group's first hunts, helps Jake test his unusual danger sense for hours, and agrees that survival requires deliberate training rather than hiding. He never becomes comfortable with conventional archery, however, and shifts toward trapping, combining that class direction with a builder profession until preparing the battlefield becomes his defining contribution. (Chapters 3–12 and 28)

The human conflict around Richard's camp changes that practical specialization into something far darker. Casper's traps accidentally kill raiders, and the murder of Lyra—the woman with whom he had begun a brief but intense relationship—turns his grief toward lethal revenge. After recognizing William's manipulation of the Tutorial war, Casper accepts an otherworldly pact, prepares a ritual from accumulated resentment, and confronts William not simply to kill him but to expose the emotional power William cannot understand. He then drives a cursed spike into his own heart, allowing the stored resentment to transform him and carry him out of the Tutorial as a Risen; the bargain also creates the path by which Lyra returns as a ghost. (Chapters 28, 33–40, 95, and 123)

World Congress and the Treasure Hunt

As a representative of the Risen at the first World Congress, Casper is caught between his dislike of public attention and his wish to see Jake and Jacob again. He helps his faction present itself without hostility, speaks candidly about the practical realities of Risen existence, and renews the easy, irreverent friendship he once shared with Jake. His willingness to joke with old colleagues and deal honestly with them gives the Risen a human connection at a gathering where their death aura and appearance otherwise provoke fear, helping secure support and future cooperation rather than isolation. (Chapters 216–225)

During the Treasure Hunt, Casper takes a more independent leadership role. His study of the curse on Yalsten lets the Risen move through its darkened regions, while his dungeon-engineering knowledge helps him cross unstable space and solve a spatial Vault alone. He shares what he knows with Jake even when his faction would benefit from secrecy, then fights the Cursed Monarch with prepared stakes, shields, curse techniques, and Lyra's power. When the vampire reveals a countermeasure that blinds and suppresses their fused Blightform, Casper chooses evacuation over a futile death, preserving the treasures his faction had secured but accepting a painful defeat that exposes the risks of relying on a specialized ultimate technique. (Chapters 283, 306, 309–310, 323, 327, and 331–336)

Hunting Grounds and B-grade Evolution

By the later C-grade period, Casper's value to the Risen extends beyond combat. The Blightfather names him a Ghost King largely because his friendship with Jake helped secure a legitimate Risen presence on Earth and equal access within the Milky Way, although Casper is uneasy about taking personal credit for what he views as basic loyalty and fortunate connections. He nevertheless accepts that the title strengthens his authority in future diplomacy, and he continues supporting the Risen settlement while advancing as a dungeon engineer through smaller dungeons, adjacent worlds, and consultation on Minaga's labyrinth complex. (Chapters 1167 and 1243–1245)

Casper later joins Jake to test Minaga's unfinished dungeon, bringing the analytical habits of both a trapper and a designer. Against its strongest golem, ordinary stakes, prepared counters, and coordinated attacks prove insufficient, so he invokes a graveyard domain built from his and Lyra's shared curse. The domain helps destroy the boss, but using it while still C-grade leaves Casper nearly immobile, consumes prepared materials, and forces Lyra through another death-like dissolution before she can reform. Casper's recovery and his subsequent criticism of the dungeon show the balance he has reached: he can deploy power far beyond his normal combat role, but he understands its cost and treats the experience as evidence for better design rather than as a triumph without consequences. (Chapters 1246–1260)

Appearance and personality

Casper first appears in the same hooded archer cloak issued to Jake, carrying a wooden bow. After becoming a Risen, his most consistently emphasized physical feature is a pair of completely black, hollow-looking eyes, accompanied by an aura of death and bottled curse energy that living observers can find unsettling. The corpus does not provide a comparably stable description of his hair, skin tone, or other facial features, so those details remain unspecified. (Chapters 3, 123, 217, and 219)

He remains introverted and uncomfortable when made the center of attention, yet he is not timid when a decision matters. Casper is technically curious, candid with people he trusts, and fond of dry humor; he can move from understated jokes with Jake to direct criticism of Minaga's dungeon design without changing his generally restrained manner. Grief and resentment made him dangerously self-destructive in the Tutorial, but later he monitors the psychological influence of his curses and relies on Lyra and his teachers to keep that intensity under control. (Chapters 3, 38, 216–225, 365, 1167, and 1243–1260)

Path, class, and abilities

Casper's combat path grows from battlefield preparation rather than direct dueling. He combines a trapper's reliance on research, placed devices, and tailored counters with the curse affinities of a Risen, while his profession applies a similar design mentality to spatial structures and dungeons.

Curse path and prepared traps

Casper first develops as an archer who gains a trapping skill, then pairs it with building so that constructing traps advances both sides of his early Path. His later curse training turns resentment and other sustained emotions into usable power: prepared stakes can carry curse scripts, splinter into nonphysical curse fragments, restrain targets, or serve as anchors for larger rituals. This makes him especially effective when he has time to investigate an enemy and prepare specific tools, but much less reliable when superior power breaks those tools or an opponent reveals an unanticipated counter. (Chapters 28, 34, 38, 310, 331–336, and 1246–1258)

Unlike Jake, whose principal curse is housed in a weapon, Casper stores and produces curse energy through his own body and Path. That close integration gives him fine control, including the ability to sense curses, stimulate or work around another curse, and maintain curses whose original emotional purpose would otherwise disperse. It also exposes him to their influence: he regularly uses methods to purge that pressure, and later explains that pushing his understanding means suffering the curse himself while staying between useful intensity and mental collapse. (Chapters 306, 364–365, and 1259)

Lyra and Blightform

Lyra resides through a locket linked to her soul and can manifest as a Blightwraith. Her blight magic complements Casper's traps, and the two can channel their energies together for stronger attacks. Their most explicit fusion, Blightform, strips away Casper's flesh and superimposes Lyra's ghostly body upon his, granting him much freer access to blight energy and a large temporary increase in power. The form also replaces ordinary senses with magical ones, allowing the Cursed Monarch's anti-blight barrier to blind and weaken them; Casper must leave the Treasure Hunt before Lyra's collapse becomes permanent. (Chapters 221, 283, and 331–336)

Dungeon engineering

Casper's dungeon profession gives him specialized spatial knowledge rather than general mastery of space magic. He uses that knowledge to read unstable dimensional structures, design and maintain dungeon environments, work with cores, and create spaces that can present controlled trials to repeated groups. Later, he maintains minor adjacent worlds and builds smaller dungeons for continuing profession experience. The work demands extensive design, suitable monsters and environments, system-compliant balance, and ongoing maintenance; the time investment also competes with hunting and leaves his combat class progressing more slowly than he would prefer. (Chapters 219, 310, 379, and 1243–1245)

Graveyard domain

Casper's late-C-grade domain manifests a fog-covered graveyard saturated with curse and blight energy. Hostile energy attacks everything foreign inside it, faceless ghosts repeatedly emerge to harry the target, and Casper's apparent body can disperse and re-form by drawing on the domain's reserves. The central stake and grave markers act as finite anchors rather than proof of true invulnerability: damage consumes the domain's energy, and its strongest finishing attack collapses the constructed space into a fused apparition of Casper and Lyra. The skill grew from an attempted private training space where the pair could endure and regulate their curses together, but invoking it before B-grade costs prepared materials, inflicts severe pain and exhaustion, and temporarily dissolves Lyra so she must recover and reform. (Chapters 1258–1259)

Relationships

  • Jake Thayne: Casper and Jake bond through shared interests and introversion before the system. Their early training helps Jake develop, while later reunions, candid exchanges about curses, and the Minaga dungeon restore the friendship on more equal terms despite their different factions. (Chapters 3–7, 123, 219–225, 364–365, and 1243–1260)
  • Lyra: Lyra's murder drives Casper's most destructive Tutorial choices, and his pact allows her to continue as a ghost linked to his locket. They remain romantic partners and combat partners whose shared curse and blight abilities make each stronger, while also making the costs of their most dangerous techniques mutual. (Chapters 34–38, 219–221, 283, 331–336, and 1258–1259)
  • Jacob: Jacob is an old colleague and fellow Tutorial survivor. Their later affiliations place the Risen and Holy Church in ideological opposition, but their World Congress reunion retains genuine personal warmth beneath the political need for distance. (Chapters 3–12 and 216–225)
  • William: Casper identifies William as the manipulator behind the Tutorial war and uses their confrontation to demonstrate the power William dismisses in emotions. He makes William witness his transformation rather than killing him, but William's role in Lyra's death leaves their conflict unresolved after both survive the Tutorial. (Chapters 33–40, 219, 227–228, and 365)
  • Priscilla: Priscilla is Casper's Risen colleague in diplomacy and faction affairs. She presents the formal public case while Casper supplies technical knowledge and unusually frank communication with Jake, even when faction officials would prefer greater secrecy. (Chapters 216–225 and 283–365)
  • Minaga: Minaga and Casper share dungeon-engineering interests. Casper consults on the labyrinth complex and later beta-tests it with Jake, answering Minaga's theatrics with dry criticism but still promising a detailed design report after surviving its overtuned final encounter. (Chapters 1243–1260)
  • Blightfather: The Blightfather is Casper's Patron and the source of his later divine blessing and Ghost King recognition. The title reflects both Casper's service to the Risen and the strategic importance of his Earth-based relationships. (Chapters 1167 and 1245)
