William
Biography
Tutorial predator and metal prodigy
William entered the Tutorial at nineteen and presented himself to Richard’s camp as the sole survivor of an ambushed group. In truth, he had used an uncommon wand’s Metal Manipulation to murder his original companions and regarded the new system as a lethal game whose rules rewarded optimization. The camp supplied healing, mana potions, smithing, and future targets, so he hid behind the appearance of a smiling, shy teenager while leveling alone. His motivation was not merely survival: liberation from old social restraints made killing feel pleasurable, and he deliberately exploited other people’s assumptions to approach them safely. (Chapters 23–25)
Once equipped with Herrmann’s armor and his own growing metal abilities, William stopped pretending to cooperate. He murdered Caroline first, then attacked Richard’s fighters through a sealed suit that redirected impacts into the ground and spread controlled metal through bodies. The massacre left him nearly dead, and Jacob chose not to finish him while helpless; after a long recovery, William narrowed his purpose to defeating Jake and proving himself the story’s protagonist. Jake instead crushed him in their final confrontation. Eversmile retrieved the corpse and spent a Leaf of Yggdrasil to resurrect him, turning death into the foundation of a profoundly unequal patronage. (Chapters 61, 69, 84, 92–96)
Eversmile’s instrument and an unseen conflict
After resurrection, William appeared outwardly quieter and was even reported as altruistic, but he continued operating under Eversmile’s direction rather than building an independent life. He avoided the first World Congress, skipped the Treasure Hunt and later system opportunities, and approached people connected to Jake—including Jake’s family—because his patron recommended those actions. During the Treasure Hunt period he also used karmic influence that left Jake’s relatives with an unnaturally favorable view of him, demonstrating that absence from public events did not mean inactivity. His choices preserved Eversmile’s access while isolating William from events that could have strengthened or clarified his own Path. (Chapters 219–220, 228, 283, 356–357)
William eventually served the coalition around Ell’Hakan by performing karmic rituals on beasts. He awakened suppressed pre-system memories and old grudges, turning recovered relationships into motives for violence against humans. Although he recognized that something about the work was wrong, he continued because Eversmile instructed him to do so. At level 199 his race evolution quest demanded that he “Find your Path,” but the patron who claimed to guide him repeatedly kept him away from precisely the experiences that could satisfy it. Nightmares centered on Jake, fear, and increasing passivity reduced the former self-directed killer to an instrument who no longer understood why he acted. (Chapters 357, 441, 529)
Confrontation, heresy, and a path of his own
William finally sought Jake during the conflict with Ell’Hakan, approaching the person he feared because Ms. Kim believed he needed to confront that fear. Their discussion exposed a consistent pattern: Eversmile had discouraged every protected system event, directed encounters William did not understand, intensified his nightmares, and even described an ordinary ancient-rarity skill as a Bloodline. Jake’s contempt was mixed with diagnosis rather than immediate violence, while the Fallen King observed that William’s old cruelty had at least been self-directed. Faced with evidence that his patron had engineered both stagnation and dependence, William began asking what he wanted rather than what his “Master” expected. (Chapters 551, 554–555)
Jake refused either to absolve William or kill him without purpose. He warned that another attack on his family would repeat the Tutorial’s ending, advised participation in the protected World Congress, and left William responsible for deciding what came next. William renounced Eversmile’s Blessing and became a heretic. At the Third World Congress, the system’s isolation severed lingering karmic influence, clarified that the nightmares and magnified fear were externally imposed, and allowed him to accept that he did not need to be a protagonist. That modest self-definition completed “Find your Path,” meeting the requirements for C-grade evolution after the event ended. (Chapters 556–557, 570–572)
Heretic scout and uneasy ally
William returned shortly before the Prima Guardian event as a level-276 Human with the explicit Heretic status. He had entered Nevermore in D-grade, cycled through six parties, and abandoned the dungeon a year and a half early to deliver urgent intelligence. Using a faint karmic bond with Ell’Hakan, he found the nahoom’s hidden homeworld, infiltrated its society as an apparent contact from Eversmile, and spent more than a year studying its manufactured devotion. His report identified Ell’Hakan’s planetary strategy and the danger of using Pylons to reinforce emotional conditioning. William’s motives combined revenge, a paid commission from an unidentified third party, and a promise whose violation would damage his own karmic Path. (Chapters 927–929)
Jake still denied him a place in the primary strike team, but William accepted a perimeter role and continued earning limited trust through useful action. He helped Arnold analyze and operate Prima-derived teleportation infrastructure, then accompanied Jake, Sandy, and Eron on the rescue of Sylphie and the Fallen King from the Desolate Child of Loss. There he immediately used full armor and a huge runed shield to cover the extraction rather than pursue personal glory. In the ensuing interplanetary campaign he applied karmic influence to open defended worlds, infiltrated enemy formations under stealth, killed with metal wire, and exposed Iludar’s false surrender—an operational ally whose later conduct is constructive without erasing the Tutorial murders. (Chapters 944, 965, 980–984, 993, 1019, 1065)
Appearance and personality
Appearance
William first appears as a handsome nineteen-year-old with the slight build and open smile of someone “barely even a man,” dressed in an upgraded caster’s robe with a wand at his hip. That harmless presentation is deliberate camouflage during the Tutorial. In battle, manipulated metal can cover him from head to foot without even air holes, turning the young caster into a sealed armored figure. By his return from Nevermore he remains young-looking but appears calmer, more composed, and less visibly intense; full-power combat still produces silver armor over the entire body. (Chapters 23, 25, 61, 928, 982)
Personality
Early William is intelligent, patient, arrogant, and profoundly callous. He understands that the Tutorial is real, yet uses game language to reduce people to disposable “NPCs,” delights in manipulation, and treats murder as both efficient leveling and entertainment. His pre-system psychological condition and later system changes explain parts of that behavior but do not transfer responsibility to Eversmile, who only became his patron after Jake killed him. Resurrection leaves William emotionally altered and increasingly dependent; years of divine interference then replace self-direction with fear, scripted obedience, and hopelessness. (Chapters 25, 95–96, 555–557)
After becoming a heretic, William is more restrained, reflective, and capable of accepting a subordinate role. Ms. Kim’s instruction leads him to avoid needless killing and to consider taking a life as a deliberate act, while freedom from Eversmile lets him acknowledge both ordinariness and personal motives. He remains manipulative, revenge-driven, and dangerous: he can befriend targets under false pretenses and later annihilate enemy formations. The meaningful change is not sainthood but agency. He chooses missions, honors promises, and directs his talents toward Earth’s enemies while understanding that Jake’s tolerance is conditional and that his past has not been judicially resolved. (Chapters 555–572, 928–929, 1065)
Path, class, and abilities
Metal affinity and acquisition
William entered the Tutorial as a basic Caster with innate metal affinity. An Exceptional Wand of Ferroras found underwater unlocked Metal Manipulation at level five, allowing him to attune metallic objects with mana and control them at range. Basic Stealth, Conjure Iron Wall, and Metallic Sight followed during early class progression. Metallic Sight routes perception through controlled metal, so floating daggers can scout around cover while simultaneously serving as weapons. The initial style already combined remote attack, vision, barriers, and ambush rather than relying on a conventional projectile spell. (Chapter 25)
Metal Manipulation scales with Intelligence but consumes both mana and concentration. Unranked metal is easy to attune; enchanted weapons resist the link so strongly that controlling an opponent’s equipment is usually inefficient. At level seventeen William could comfortably direct seven daggers and force an eighth only by sacrificing versatility. Lifting armor for flight or counteracting incoming blows also drains mana, and the Tutorial version lacked healing beyond potions. These constraints reward prepared metal, short decisive engagements, and stealth rather than unrestricted control of everything metallic nearby. (Chapter 25)
Armor, constructs, and wire
William’s crafted and absorbed metal turns defense into active control. Herrmann’s enchanted armor distributes force while William’s manipulation braces the shell against impacts; the same material can seal his face, form weapons, and move him through the air. Later progression produces silver full-body armor and a runed shield roughly five meters wide, built and continuously reinforced with mana. Against the Desolate Child of Loss, that shield functions as immediate team protection, demonstrating that a framework once used to tank a camp’s fighters can be redirected toward rescue. (Chapters 61, 84, 982)
His offensive repertoire advances from daggers and iron walls to spears, sawlike constructs, metal transmutation, and extremely fine wire. Wire supports quiet restraint as well as mass killing: it can wrap a target’s neck without cutting, or pass through a formation under stealth and leave blood and dismembered bodies behind. Metal spreading through a victim can immobilize or convert flesh into iron, but later enemies and conceptual effects require far larger constructs and greater mana investment than Tutorial humans did. The latest demonstrated state remains lethal to ordinary C-grade forces, though no post-Nevermore class name or complete skill list is disclosed. (Chapters 61, 84, 551, 982, 1065)
Karmic magic, stealth, and limits
Eversmile teaches William karmic magic after resurrection. William perceives relationships as threads in a vast web, preserves faint bonds over interplanetary distance, reads the sincerity behind statements, and uses existing connections to track people or places. He can restore suppressed memories and the emotions attached to them, as with beasts manipulated against humans, or influence trust sufficiently to infiltrate a fanatic society and extract plans from its leadership. His C-grade stealth is also karma-related and judged by Jake to be at least comparable to Unseen Hunter, letting William fade even from ordinary high-level perception. (Chapters 356–357, 529, 928–929)
The magic depends on genuine connections and carries consequences. Finding Ell’Hakan’s world required a bond formed during their earlier meeting; William could not simply choose an unknown planet. Promises become Path-relevant enough that breaking one would hurt him. Karmic influence can manipulate trust and help persuade defenders, but does not automatically overwrite everyone: on Ell’Hakan’s world, William concluded that passive conditioning was slow and could be resisted by conscious disagreement. His own history exposes the greatest danger—superior karmic practitioners can plant nightmares, magnify fear, obstruct clarity, and leave effects that survive the end of a Blessing until a system event forcibly dispels them. (Chapters 555, 570–572, 928–929)
Progression and latest state
William’s evolution stalled at level 199 not for lack of combat power but because his quest demanded an internally chosen Path. Renouncing Eversmile was necessary but insufficient; he completed the requirement only after the World Congress stripped away lingering interference and he accepted a self-defined role. By Chapter 928 he is a level-276 C-grade Human with the Heretic designation, seasoned by Nevermore and more than a year of independent infiltration. His latest combat evidence combines metal wire, advanced stealth, karmic lie detection, and controlled brutality during Earth’s galactic campaign. The corpus does not confirm B-grade evolution, a replacement patron, or the exact names of his current class and profession. (Chapters 570–572, 928, 1065)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Caster / metal-affinity Path | 25 | His basic Tutorial class and awakened affinity establish the formal base of his combat Path. |
| Death and Eversmile's resurrection | 92–96 | Jake kills William and Eversmile spends a Leaf of Yggdrasil to revive him; the restored life begins a dependent patronage rather than an earned combat evolution. |
| Level-199 evolution block | 529, 551–557 | His race quest requires him to “Find your Path,” and years of avoidance and control keep the otherwise powerful D-grade from evolving. |
| Heretic and C-grade evolution | 570–572 | Renouncing the blessing and entering the isolated World Congress clears lingering influence; accepting a self-defined role completes his evolution requirement. |
Relationships
- Jake Thayne is first William’s desired rival and killer, then the person who exposes Eversmile’s sabotage. Their later relationship is conditional cooperation, not friendship or forgiveness. Jake supplies the confrontation that prompts heresy and judges William’s later usefulness, while William provides intelligence and battlefield support without expecting trust.
- Eversmile resurrects William, teaches him karmic magic, and claims the authority of a master. That investment conceals systematic control: excluded events, engineered nightmares, false claims about a Bloodline, and a Path stalled at level 199. William’s heresy ends the Blessing but not necessarily Eversmile’s interest in the experiment.
- Ell’Hakan benefits from William’s early ritual work. William reports in Chapter 929 that Ell’Hakan knew Eversmile was sabotaging him, but the corpus does not independently confirm active complicity. William later converts the reported betrayal into a motive for revenge, tracks Ell’Hakan’s karmic connection to his homeworld, infiltrates the Celestial Child’s regime, and provides Jake with intelligence designed to obstruct its expansion.
- Miranda Wells receives William’s reconnaissance report, uses his karmic talents in Earth’s later planetary operations, and treats his information as valuable without discarding security concerns. Their working relationship gives William a practical place in Earth’s coalition while keeping his role subordinate to operational oversight.
- Fallen King challenges William’s passive post-resurrection state by contrasting it with the Tutorial killer’s self-directed will. Later, William joins the rescue team sent to extract the King and Sylphie, using his defensive metal constructs in a mission centered on saving rather than dominating others.
