Carmen
Carmen is an Earth-born pugilist and Valhal warrior whose pursuit of strength turns a ruined boxing career and imprisonment into the foundation of an exceptionally durable Runemaiden Path. Her blunt loyalty, friendship and rivalry with Jake Thayne, and willingness to confront both her family and her own faction make her an important independent power in Earth's developing alliances.
Biography
From boxer to tutorial survivor
Carmen grew up in the wealthy Italian Salvento family, where comparisons with her cousin Beatrice left her insecure and angry. Boxing, discovered at eighteen, gave her confidence and a future she believed was finally her own. Beatrice deliberately destroyed that future by crushing Carmen's hand in a car door, leaving damage ordinary medicine could not reverse. When Beatrice later taunted her, Carmen beat her nearly to death, refused to support the family's preferred lie in court, and received a five-year prison sentence. She had served roughly two years when the system arrived. (Chapter Intermission 1)
The tutorial placed the prison's inmates and guards into opposing factions, but Carmen rejected the scenario's intended politics and treated the new world as a chance to reclaim control of her life. She began as a Heavy Warrior, abandoned her axe in favor of her fists, cleared three dungeons, and accepted a divine blessing only after rejecting an earlier offer. Her final target was the abusive warden who had tormented prisoners; killing her earned Carmen the Rising Star title and confirmed that strength, rather than family standing or legal authority, would define her future. (Chapter Intermission 1)
After returning to Earth, Carmen repeatedly challenged the D-grade Slothful Warden inside a Sacred Battleground. She learned to combine extreme regeneration, Ruinous Drive, and attacks that left hostile energy imprinted in the enemy's body, eventually overcoming its healing despite losing limbs during prior attempts. The victory completed the Savage Pugilist's climb to level ninety-nine and symbolically ended the hold prison still had over her. Her accompanying profession honored kills through tributes to Valhal and could call echoes of sacrificed foes, tying personal combat directly to her factional Path. (Chapter 180)
World Congress and the Treasure Hunt
As the owner of a city, Carmen entered the first World Congress responsible for people despite openly hating formal politics and presentation. Valhal appealed to her because it prized individual combat, opposed gaining honor by preying on the weak, and allowed members to seek worthy fights without demanding a polished public persona. Yet the Congress revived her old fear that everyone around her was smarter and more competent. Miranda's candid explanation that Gudrun's comparisons to Valdemar praised Carmen's combat genius, rather than calling her simple, gave Carmen a new understanding of both her Patron and her own intelligence. (Chapters 216–226)
Carmen entered the Treasure Hunt independently and soon joined Sylphie, whose company she genuinely enjoyed, and other Valhal fighters. Her punches transmitted kinetic force through targets rather than relying only on surface damage, letting her contribute against enemies whose bodies resisted ordinary blows. After the Monarch of Blood battle, she explained to Jake how boosting skills exceed their nominal limits: Toughness can make unsafe output survivable, while stamina carries the user's intent. Her insistence that she wanted to become better at punching was therefore specialization, not simplicity, modeled on Valdemar reaching the peak through commitment to one weapon. (Chapters 283–343)
Family reckoning and the Runemaiden's ascent
During a journey with Jake and Sylphie, Carmen's hatred of people who hid abuse behind status drew her into Ambermill's slave-trading operation. She infiltrated its recruitment process, exposed the coercive contracts, and destroyed the town's leadership when they tried to defend the trade. On the road she also demonstrated how her developing Path forged her body: a painful golden ritual engraved runes into her Soulshape, while Jake helped her begin sensing that structure and Carmen diagnosed the weaknesses in his weapon technique. Their exchange made the friendship a practical training partnership rather than simple mutual admiration. (Chapters 451–455)
In Paradise, Carmen found the Salvento family thriving and Beatrice physically restored, forcing her to decide whether revenge or distance would actually free her. She chose confrontation because leaving without answers would preserve the family's power over her. Her mother's resistance revealed that the wider family had deceived and isolated both women, while Carmen's father had ultimately chosen status over them. When the family attempted to imprison Carmen and her mother, Carmen defeated their summoned defenders, killed Beatrice and the principal relatives she blamed, spared her father only at her mother's request, and rejected the Salvento name. The outcome gave her the closure she had sought, though the text does not present her revenge as disinterested justice. (Chapters 464–470)
Carmen later questioned Valhal's political dealings around Ell'Hakan and stopped offering tributes while she considered whether the faction still suited her. Jake urged her to make the Path her own rather than accept every institutional decision, and their friendship also became casually intimate without either seeking an exclusive relationship. Carmen ultimately recommitted to the martial Path on her terms. In C-grade she endured an eleven-day Ascension Ritual using Valdemar's blood—after forty thousand prior attempts with that blood had failed—and emerged as the first living Runemaiden of Valdemar in more than half an era. (Chapters 569–572 and 688)
Nevermore and a test against Jake
Valhal assigned Carmen to Warlord Davion's Nevermore party, where she immediately pursued the arena and won one hundred consecutive matches before her teammates made her resume the dungeon. She remained frustrated by companions who could not match her directness or durability, particularly when weak support cost the group better outcomes. In the Colosseum, where race, levels, and ordinary skills were suppressed, she compensated for a vulnerable G-grade body with fundamentals, bracers, and the conceptual residue behind her strikes. The trial showed that the Runemaiden's advantages had not replaced the boxing craft beneath them. (Chapters 664, 735, and 752)
At the gathering of Earth's prominent Nevermore competitors, Carmen attended as both a successful entrant and Valhal's visible point of contact with Jake. She rejected Davion's suspicion that her intimacy with Jake made her a covert seducer and instead treated their connection as personal, even while acknowledging its diplomatic value. Her plain reading of the room also helped Jake navigate factional expectations. The distinction mattered because Carmen would represent Valhal without allowing either Valhal or outsiders to redefine her friendship as an assignment. (Chapters 878–886)
Jake later visited Valhal and fought Carmen under rules excluding active skills and boosts. His weapons could not meaningfully pierce her Runemaiden body, while she struggled to land a decisive blow against his reactions; the contest ended as a resource-driven draw. Carmen openly explained that skin and bones were her strongest points, eyes a relative weakness, and excessive boosting capable of compromising durability. Their subsequent experiments with his poisonous touch cost her limbs that she regenerated, combining trust, competition, and dangerous training while confirming how difficult her transformed body was to heal or alter. (Chapters 886–889)
Prima Guardian, galactic war, and advanced runes
Against Earth's Prima Guardian, Carmen served on the principal melee line with the Sword Saint, Vesperia, and Jake. The adaptive boss softened its body to trap her fist, copied aspects of her defenses, and forced her to balance boosting against the cracking of her own skin. Her Fist of Ragnarok broke one of the Guardian's arms but also shattered hers, while acid rain failed to meaningfully harm her. She repeatedly accepted punishment to keep pressure on the boss, establishing both the enormous defensive value of the Runemaiden body and the finite stamina and structural strain behind it. (Chapters 933–939)
During the war's final crisis, Jake called Carmen against the Desolate Child of Loss because her runes could resist its concept of desolation. A Sacred Battlefield and Divine Blood Seal restricted the False God's escape, and Carmen maintained her defenses through active stamina infusion while repeatedly breaking its body. Fist of Ragnarok then carved a cone of devastation thousands of kilometers long and dismembered it. Her closing rune ritual attacked the root of its existence, drained its accumulated faith into Valhal and her Patron, and permanently ended it; she freely gave the revealed fragment of the Fallen King to Jake. (Chapters 1064–1067)
Carmen returned to Valhal rather than remain on Earth, continuing to refine the permanent runic foundation of her Path. In a later arena fight she broke magical chains on contact, fought several opponents at once, and activated the offense-oriented Ruination Stance, whose red runes increased destructive power at the cost of lower defense. She recognized ranged enemies who could penetrate her skin as an ongoing weakness and sought a better movement skill. A senior Runemaiden taught that her techniques should increasingly find their Origin in the runes; Carmen remained eager enough to welcome spars that broke bones, showing that hard-earned self-confidence had become disciplined appetite rather than the helpless anger of her youth. (Chapter 1241)
Appearance and personality
Carmen is a compact, muscular woman whose build visibly reflects years of boxing and system-enhanced training. By the morning after the Paradise confrontation, her hair is explicitly short and blonde, though Jake later admits uncertainty about whether it had once been red or merely looked red under heavy blood. She commonly wears practical combat gear—cured leather, metal bracers, and heavy boots—and her transformation leaves runic patterns across a body whose skin and bones are unnaturally resilient. (Chapters 467, 470, 888, and 894)
Blunt, profane, competitive, and impatient with ceremony, Carmen often understands the world through training and direct action. That manner can hide persistent insecurity: politics and her family's judgment initially make her feel intellectually inferior, while candid explanations and achieved competence help her reassess herself. She despises status used to conceal exploitation, respects strength that is tested honestly, and is capable of both generous loyalty and unapologetically personal revenge. Her humor and comfort around Jake and Sylphie coexist with a strong refusal to let friendship, sex, or factional duty become ownership. (Chapters 226, 451, 466–470, 572, and 886–889)
Path, class, and abilities
Carmen's combat system turns the boxing skills of her former life into a stamina-based pugilist Path. Her early Savage Pugilist class and tribute profession emphasize direct battle, bodily refinement, and the echoes or Records of worthy kills; the C-grade Ascension Ritual later makes those priorities permanent as a Runemaiden of Valdemar. (Chapters 180, 455, 688, and 1064)
Runemaiden Ascension and living-weapon body
The Runemaiden Ascension Ritual requires rare materials and the blood of a greater being, with failure producing death rather than a lesser safe result. Carmen chose Valdemar's blood despite its overwhelming Records and the ritual's historical failure rate, surviving eleven days and becoming his first living Runemaiden in more than half an era. The transformation is permanent: later growth can only produce variants of the Path, and her body becomes the principal weapon rather than a platform for ordinary equipment or spellcasting. (Chapters 688 and 794)
Her mana pool is converted to stamina. She can laboriously turn stamina back into mana, but the process weakens her, disrupts passive skills, and cannot project mana outside her body except through direct contact with an item. Skin and bones receive the greatest reinforcement, internal structures are strengthened as well, and normal weapons struggle to penetrate her. That same resistance makes regeneration and outside healing harder, while the eyes remain a comparative weak point. Active boosting can also trade away some of the durability on which the Path depends. (Chapters 888 and 1064)
Anti-magic runes and bodily forging
The visible runes principally protect Carmen from effects her physical toughness alone cannot answer. They resist magic, mental and soul attacks, and even concepts such as desolation; sufficiently powerful or sustained effects can still exhaust their protection. Their indiscriminate resistance is also a cost: allied buffs, many boosting skills, and auxiliary items may fail or require special effort. Carmen must actively feed stamina into the runes when nullifying an extreme effect, so an endurance loss can expose her even when the initial attack appears harmless. (Chapters 1064–1065)
Before full Ascension, Carmen already forged her hands by immersing them in a painful golden substance and guiding its energy into runes in her Soulshape. The procedure used energy associated with Valhal tributes and made her hands incompatible with ordinary mana channeling, a loss she accepted because she had already centered her Path on stamina. Her latest training aims to make more skills originate directly in the runes, replacing borrowed linear instruction with deeper conceptual integration. (Chapters 455 and 1241)
Sacred Battlefield, seals, and tribute rites
Carmen can establish a Sacred Battlefield that supports her style of prolonged close combat; earlier versions also let her repeatedly face selected opponents and learn through lethal-seeming trials. Against the Desolate Child of Loss, she linked the battlefield to a Divine Blood Seal derived from Valdemar's blood. Identical marks bound combatants to the contest, slowing the Child when it fled from Carmen and accelerating her pursuit, but the battlefield itself could weaken under sustained desolation and still required her to preserve enough stamina to exploit it. (Chapters 180 and 1064–1066)
Her profession converts combat into tributes to Valhal. Early rites used prepared loot and defeated enemies to call echoes of sacrificed foes for training or battle. The advanced ritual used after defeating the Desolate Child instead attacked the persistent root of a False God's existence and diverted its faith energy to Valhal and Carmen's Patron. This is demonstrated as a specialized finishing rite, not a universal ability to erase any opponent, and its known success followed the Child's physical destruction and confinement inside Carmen's runic formation. (Chapters 180 and 1066–1067)
Fist of Ragnarok and Runic Stances
Fist of Ragnarok is Carmen's strongest demonstrated finisher and expresses the concept of ruination through a single punch. It can overcome defenses that survive her normal combinations, but the recoil and empowered output are not free: against the Prima Guardian it destroyed an arm while breaking Carmen's own, and against the Desolate Child it was used only after she had established control of the fight. Its largest shown strike altered terrain across thousands of kilometers and left the False God in pieces. (Chapters 936 and 1066)
Runic Stances are later refinements that alter which qualities her runes emphasize. Ruination Stance turns the patterns red, raises speed and destructive output, and causes impacts to erupt with destructive force, but lowers her defense enough for attacks that would normally fail to draw blood. Carmen can currently end it without a period of weakness, though stronger future stances may restore that penalty. Training its concepts also improves Fist of Ragnarok outside the stance; at the latest point shown, Carmen considers it a situational answer to durable opponents rather than a default mode. (Chapter 1241)
Boxing technique and limitations
Carmen retains the footwork, feints, timing, and body mechanics of a trained boxer. She can evade a faster opponent by reading predictable attacks, transmit kinetic force through armor or flesh, and fight effectively when system-granted advantages are suppressed. Her specialization leaves deliberate gaps: she has little ranged offense, depends on closing distance, carries very low Willpower beneath the runes, and cannot easily accept magical support. At the latest point in the corpus she is working to upgrade her movement skill while remaining in C-grade and close to B-grade. (Chapters 283, 455, 752, 1064, 1228, and 1241)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Savage Pugilist and tribute Path | 180 | Her early class and profession turn boxing, bodily refinement, defeated foes, and Valhal tribute into system progression. |
| Runeforged hands | 455 | A painful forging embeds golden runes in her Soulshape and sacrifices ordinary mana channeling through her hands for stamina-centered power. |
| Runemaiden Ascension (C-grade) | 688, 794 | Valdemar's blood lets her survive an eleven-day, death-on-failure ritual, permanently converting mana to stamina and her body into a living anti-magic weapon. |
Relationships
- Jake Thayne: Carmen and Jake develop from fellow Earth elites into trusted friends, training partners, rivals, and occasional lovers. He helps her confront her family and conceptualize her Soulshape; she corrects his melee technique, challenges his assumptions about Valhal, and answers his call against the Desolate Child without surrendering her independence.
- Sylphie: Carmen befriends Sylphie during the Treasure Hunt and later travels, fights, and jokes with her. Their easy affection contrasts with Carmen's guarded adult relationships, and Sylphie's presence repeatedly helps defuse Carmen's suspicion or anger.
- Miranda Wells: Miranda's honest explanation of Gudrun and Valdemar helps Carmen reinterpret what she had taken as an insult, beginning a friendship founded on complementary strengths rather than social competition.
- Sven: Sven is an early Valhal contact and frequent factional associate. Carmen rejects excessive deference from him and expects Valhal comrades to treat her as a fighter rather than a ceremonial superior.
- Gudrun and Valdemar: Gudrun guides Carmen toward the Runemaiden Path and reframes her fighting intelligence, while Valdemar's blood makes Carmen's Ascension exceptionally dangerous and exceptionally potent. Carmen respects their martial ideal without treating every political act by Valhal as correct.
- Maura and the Salvento family: Carmen rescues her mother Maura from the family's control and accepts that Maura had been deceived, but she renounces the wider family. Her revenge against Beatrice and the relatives who destroyed her former life closes one source of insecurity while leaving the violence as Carmen's conscious personal choice.
Items
Carmen has no personal item in the finalized notable-item scope. Her gloves, bracers, armor, and ritual materials support individual scenes, but none has a separate generated item article.
