Spartan
Spartan is a living divine-bird descendant who hatches in the Tower of Wish and becomes Kim Hajin's familiar and companion. He thinks, chooses favorites, communicates through shared senses, scouts, fights, and transports people through space. Although characters sometimes call him a pet or use possessive language, his repeated independent choices make him an autonomous person and ally, never an item or piece of property.
Biography
Hatching and choosing companions
The newborn Descendant of Muninn recognizes Hajin and refuses several proposed names before delightedly accepting the elaborate “Mr. Spartan Keyser Söze Macbeth Junior.” Naming awakens Ring of Perception, allowing shared vision and thought, along with Tower travel benefits and the promise of further growth. Even as a chick, Spartan expresses preferences, explores on his own, and responds rather than functioning as passive equipment. (Chapter 180)
Spartan quickly chooses Boss as another close companion, ignoring Hajin's open arms to burrow into hers and later sleeping in either room according to his own wishes. His presence helps Boss recover emotionally, while the Orb of Regeneration restores her body as she rests and pats him. The scene links Spartan to the household's recovery without confusing the living bird with the healing artifact beside him. (Chapters 183–188)
Tower scout and combat familiar
As Spartan grows into an eagle, Summon lets him appear beside Hajin without an ordinary route, and Ring of Perception turns his aerial view into reconnaissance. He follows Bucephalus, detects challengers, guides allies, reads emotional cues through their bond, and fires magic-power blasts beside Sannuri during the calamity hunts. His flight, senses, and combat support repeatedly solve problems that Hajin cannot reach from the ground. (Chapters 190–215)
Spartan also acts from attachment rather than simple orders. When his mental connection disappears during Hajin's time in Akatrina, he believes Hajin has died, grieves, and then forcefully summons him as soon as the link returns. The rescue overtaxes Spartan's magic and accidentally pulls Jin Sahyuk along; Hajin sends her back and gives the hurting bird the Orb of Regeneration to recover from excessive Authority use. (Chapters 196–197 and 237–238)
Existence, teleportation, and the Orden crisis
Authority of Existence allows Spartan to leave the Tower and remain on Earth, where he befriends Evandel and continues scouting for Hajin. A later Teleportation Authority moves him and others between floors, countries, and distant coordinates. During the Orden crisis he carries messages, infiltrates a corrupt official's home, locates people through shared sight, moves the Chameleon Troupe, and brings Hajin to dangerous sites without needing vehicles or fixed portals. (Chapters 225–280)
The work carries real risk and demonstrates physical vulnerability. Spartan tires after large transports, refuses to leave Hajin during the approach to Orden's palace, and can be injured by attacks that interrupt his Authority. When Leraje's arrow wounds his wing during reconnaissance, he teleports away just before being killed and later returns only after healing. His utility never makes him expendable; Hajin repeatedly withdraws him when danger exceeds what he can survive. (Chapters 238, 269–280, and 305–309)
Independent rescues and life after the war
Against Yi Yeonjun and the devils, Spartan transmits observed conversations, tracks targets through France, and moves allies across distorted time and space. He brings Kim Suho to save Hajin, carries Chae Nayun through a spatial distortion, and transports Boss and other Troupe members into the battle. At least one rescue may be Spartan's own decision, and the repeated journeys leave him visibly exhausted. (Chapters 302–311 and 347–360)
After the war, Spartan spends time with Evandel and Rachel and is gentle enough for them to treat him as a friend despite his grown size. When most people forget Hajin, Spartan abruptly shrieks during testimony and pecks Rachel's smartwatch, helping draw attention toward the missing person. He remains a living social bond among Hajin's companions rather than disappearing once his transport role is no longer needed. (Chapters 371–374)
Appearance and personality
Spartan hatches as a small chick and grows into a handsome eagle descended from the divine bird Muninn. His cries mature from chirps to sharp shrieks, and his adult body is first about the length of Hajin's forearm before later becoming large enough to carry Chae Nayun by his legs. He perches on shoulders, makes Boss's bed his nest, and can cross the sky at extreme speed. (Chapters 180, 190, 218, 272, 280, and 358)
He is intelligent, affectionate, proud, and selective. Spartan rejects names he dislikes, favors Boss even when Hajin calls him, teases Evandel by keeping just out of reach, and sometimes sleeps instead of maintaining surveillance. He is also loyal and brave: he mourns a severed connection, refuses to abandon a dangerous mission, and repeatedly crosses hostile space to bring help, sometimes without receiving a detailed order. (Chapters 180, 183–184, 225, 238, 280, 305, and 360)
Gifts and abilities
Ring of Perception connects Spartan and Hajin's vision and thoughts. Hajin can look through Spartan's eyes, receive memories and conversations, locate targets from above, and communicate over great distances. Spartan's senses eventually exceed ordinary human perception and can pick up emotional or mental impressions, but fatigue and disrupted connections can delay or interrupt the information he supplies. (Chapters 180–181, 191, 196, 213, 231–245, and 302–311)
Spartan is a fast aerial scout and capable supporting combatant. He tracks moving targets, evades attacks in flight, guides allies through enemy territory, penetrates Boss's barrier without injury, and shoots blasts of magic power at monsters. He can be struck and wounded, however, and a damaged wing prevents Authority use until he heals, placing a concrete survival limit on otherwise exceptional mobility. (Chapters 190–192, 212–215, 245, 250, and 305–309)
Summon lets Spartan or Hajin close their distance abruptly, while Authority of Existence allows Spartan to accompany Hajin outside the Tower. Teleportation develops from movement within the Tower into long-range and distorted-space transport for individuals or groups. Its cost rises with distance, unstable summoning can pull unintended passengers, and repeated journeys exhaust or hurt him, so it is powerful rather than unlimited. (Chapters 190, 197, 225, 230, 237–241, 269–280, and 355–360)
Spartan can also release warm magic that restores Hajin's expended stamina and energy, resembling the Hot Spring of Peace. The separate Orb of Regeneration heals Boss while she rests beside Spartan and is later handed to Spartan when excessive teleportation leaves him in pain. These are related recovery scenes, but the orb remains an external artifact and Spartan's own restorative magic is a distinct living ability. (Chapters 188, 201, and 238)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Descendant of Muninn / Ring of Perception | 180 | Hatches, accepts his name, and awakens a bond sharing vision, thoughts, memories, and later extraordinary sensory impressions with Hajin. |
| Authority of Existence | 225 | Gains the ability to leave the Tower and remain on Earth instead of being confined to the Tower's reconstructed existence. |
| Long-range Teleportation Authority | 230–280 | Develops transport across floors, countries, and distorted spaces for individuals or groups; distance, unintended passengers, injury, and exhaustion limit it. |
| Wing injury / Authority disabled | 305–309 | Leraje wounds him during reconnaissance, preventing further Authority use until healing and establishing a concrete physical failure state. |
Relationships
- Kim Hajin: Spartan recognizes Hajin at birth, shares his mind and senses, and becomes his most reliable scout and means of transport. Hajin names, trains, protects, and heals him, while Spartan grieves when their link disappears and repeatedly brings the allies needed to save him. The bond supports cooperation without erasing Spartan's independent preferences or decisions. (Chapters 180–201, 225–280, and 302–360)
- Yi Byul: Spartan chooses Boss's embrace and bedroom almost immediately, becomes a steady emotional comfort, and later stays beside her so she can know whether Hajin is safe. He brings her into the final distorted-space battle, possibly on his own initiative, after several exhausting rescues. Boss treats him as a companion whose signals she trusts. (Chapters 183–188, 192, 197, 213, 262, 272, 355, and 360)
- Evandel and Rachel: On Earth, Spartan becomes one of Evandel's animal friends and later stays with her and Rachel after the war. Rachel finds his presence mysteriously warm and comforting, while Evandel calls him a best friend and holds him without fear. His alarm during the testimony helps reconnect their attention to the forgotten Hajin. (Chapters 225, 328, and 371–374)
- Sannuri and the Chameleon Troupe: Spartan scouts and fights beside Sannuri, brings Jain into the Python raid, and transports Troupe members during emergencies. He is part of their household life as well as their field operations, sleeping in the hideout and carrying information between separated members. The relationship is companionship and teamwork, not ownership by the organization. (Chapters 184–218, 238, 262, 269, 272, and 355–360)
Items
Spartan is not an item and has no personal equipment article. The Orb of Regeneration is associated with his recovery twice: Boss holds it while resting beside him, and Hajin later hands it to Spartan after an exhausting forced summon and return transport. Hajin also makes him a mission-specific transparent cape, but neither artifact defines Spartan's identity or autonomy. (Chapters 188, 233, and 238)
