Yang Zhuo
Yang Zhuo is a rising ruler whose personal ties to the Li family coexist with their competition over Jiangnan. His connection to True Essence gives him extraordinary martial power, while his rule makes the question of whether the Lis will serve Song consequential for Li Zhouwei, Li Ximing, and Li Jiangliang.
Biography
Friendship, marriage, and the Li family’s calculation
Yang Zhuo’s friendship with Li Jiangliang becomes a family tie when Yang’s younger sister, Yang Tianyou, marries him. Yang describes Jiangliang as a childhood friend and brother, while Jiangliang follows him in hope of pacifying Yue and gaining the power to save common people. Their bond places the Li family near Song’s growing power, though Yang has little regard for Jiangliang’s elder brother Jiangqian. (Chapters 1546–1547 and 1685)
Li Zhouwei warns that the family must not casually interfere in Yang’s affairs, and Ximing also treats Yang’s upheaval separately from Moongaze Lake’s interests. The Great Expansion Heavenly Plain Scripture later calculates 1,891 possible futures for the Li family; 523 branches align with Song, enjoy a brief peace, and are eventually defeated by Zhao. Yang Ruiyi separately offers support for Zhouwei’s pursuit of the True Monarch position if he serves the dynasty, but Zhouwei does not commit. (Chapters 1552, 1560, 1605 and 1639)
True Essence and the rise of Song
When Yang leads Li Jiangliang and the others into Simin, the Azure Pond Sect has already descended into chaos and only Qin Xian’s faction still resists outside the prefecture. Qin has risen from a humble background to a well-resourced sect leader, making his stand a serious obstacle. Yang kills him in a single exchange: six forms of Water-Fire strike before the Pacifying Barbarians Nine-Bend Trident can descend, destroying Qin’s body and soul. A Si family cultivator then calls on the remaining Qin faction to surrender, and the dynasty takes Simin after six centuries of Azure Pond rule. (Chapter 1627)
Yang’s power comes from more than cultivated technique. He is the reincarnation of True Essence and was born with innate Metallic Essence, which lets him summon all six Water-Fire forms without perfecting the divine ability; their strength and manifestation are diminished compared with fully cultivated True Essence. Nuzi’s earlier guess that Yang may have reached Purple Mansion is only speculation. (Chapters 1633 and 1635)
Yang’s divine ability is concealed by the Guzhou Cauldron, leaving ordinary observers unable to make out even his silhouette. Si Yuanli alone is allowed to witness it: he had pledged allegiance early and guarded the outer-sea territories during Yang’s year of seclusion. Yuanli congratulates him on attaining his divine ability, and Yang acknowledges the service before offering him a royal title. Yuanli refuses, insisting that the Si family are subjects of Tianwu. The exchange confirms Yang’s attainment and shows the limit of his attempt to bring the Si family into his new order; the ability’s name, substage, and Yang’s formal realm remain unknown. (Chapter 1635)
An emperor’s definition of loyalty
Yang establishes Great Song and takes the throne, remembering the road encounter that began his friendship with Jiangliang and crediting him as a trusted minister. Jiangliang’s belief that the emperor can save common people is tested when he questions Yang’s decision to admit people affected by the Great Desire Dao into the prefectures. (Chapters 1685–1686)
Yang says he ordered that none of the Great Desire-corrupted survivors be killed. Since the people’s minds have already been changed, he refuses to tamper with their souls to restore them; true devotion must be chosen freely. Under the Great Desire Dao they had no freedom to disbelieve, but under his rule they may choose not to believe in him. This principle distinguishes his government from the Wei Emperor and Sheji traditions Jiangliang invokes. (Chapter 1686)
Yang then sends Jiangliang to Jiaozhi to arrange for Liu Bai, a Purple Mansion cultivator holding Chu’s military tally, to command its defenses as Protector-General. Jiangliang proposes the name Tranquil Sea Protectorate, but Yang changes it to Stillness Sea Protectorate and defines its charge as stability and lasting peace. Jiangliang is the emissary who arranges the command, not the appointed protector. Li Suining later recalls an earlier life in which Yang remains emperor after the Li family’s defeat. (Chapters 1686 and 1688)
Appearance and personality
Before the enthronement, Yang Zhuo stands beside the throne in a simple white robe, his long hair unbound; Jiangliang later helps him into ceremonial robes. His demeanor is composed, and his conversations show a ruler who remembers personal debts, values Jiangliang’s service, and makes sweeping decisions about the new dynasty. His policy on the Great Desire-corrupted survivors frames loyalty as a choice rather than an imposed belief. (Chapters 1685–1686)
Abilities and cultivation
True Essence and innate Metallic Essence
Yang Zhuo is the reincarnation of True Essence and was born with innate Metallic Essence. The True Essence Dao associates its highest level with six forms of Water-Fire, but Yang can summon all six without first perfecting the divine ability. Their natural forms are diminished in strength and manifestation compared with fully cultivated True Essence, yet can strike in succession with lethal effect. (Chapters 1635 and 1686)
He uses the six forms to destroy Qin Xian before the trident can strike. In a later display, Yang’s divine ability is concealed by the Guzhou Cauldron, and Si Yuanli alone witnesses enough to congratulate him for attaining it. The attained ability is unnamed; his formal Immortal Dao realm is also unknown. (Chapters 1627 and 1635)
Pacifying Barbarians Nine-Bend Trident
Yang carries the Pacifying Barbarians Nine-Bend Trident. It is present in the confrontation with Qin Xian, but Yang’s six Water-Fire forms kill Qin before the trident descends. (Chapter 1627)
Power progression
| Stage / Realm / Ability | Chapter(s) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Innate Metallic Essence; six naturally summoned, diminished Water-Fire forms | By 1635 | The forms are an innate expression, weaker and less fully manifested than cultivated True Essence. |
| Divine ability attained; name and substage unknown | By 1635 | Si Yuanli congratulates Yang on the attainment. This milestone is distinct from the innate ability to summon the six forms; no formal realm is named. |
