Xia Shouyu
Xia Shouyu is an Eastern Sea cultivator of Qingxu Temple who rises from the late Qi Cultivation Realm to Foundation Establishment. A dangerous bargain with Li Ximing takes her away from the impoverished end of the sea; later, his marriage arrangement brings her into the Li Family, where she becomes an influential steward of its spiritual-qi resources. Biography
A risky search changes her prospects
At the remote end of the sea, Shouyu is a ninth-stage Qi cultivator and one of the few local figures with real power. She searches a hot spring for a dead cultivator’s possessions, hoping that even one Foundation Establishment artifact will enrich her household. The search instead leaves her trapped by Li Ximing, a far stronger cultivator who first terrifies her and then binds her by oath to bring him a Foundation Establishment demon. Shouyu accepts despite knowing her limits. When the demon’s people maim her and force her back toward the cavern, she uses her knowledge of the region and their greed to keep herself alive until Li Ximing intervenes and restores her legs. She then helps him work with Qingxu Temple, protects the temple’s people during their departure, and eventually enters seclusion with the pill he provided; after three years, she emerges having completed Foundation Establishment. (Chapters 1179–1180, 1193–1197, 1225–1226)
A granted marriage becomes a position of influence
Shouyu is grateful to Li Ximing for transforming her prospects, but her low birth and the new strength she gains leave her alert to how she is regarded among larger lineages. He arranges her marriage to Li Zhouming and sends her to the lake with the contract and a personal letter. Zhouming is surprised by the agreement, while Shouyu accepts it respectfully and handles the family’s uncertainty about her background with tact. As a senior member of the Li Family, she later gains responsibility for Cuoxiang and the qi-gathering system in Milin Prefecture. Working with Li Quewan, she raises collection requirements and directs more spiritual qi toward lesser families and lineages, shifting access away from groups that had long benefited from the old arrangement. (Chapters 1237, 1242, 1248–1250, 1270, 1303, 1510)
Appearance and personality
Shouyu first appears in mismatched, patched clothing, but carries herself with care and presents herself as an Eastern Sea cultivator. As her circumstances improve, she dresses in white and wears ornaments befitting her new station. She is ambitious, cautious in unfamiliar company, quick to read other people’s motives, and capable of sharp humor with Zhouming. Her deference toward Li Ximing combines gratitude with lasting fear of the power that once changed her fate by force. (Chapters 1179, 1226, 1237, 1249–1250, 1368, 1510)
Abilities and cultivation
Shouyu is a ninth-stage Qi Cultivation Realm cultivator when she first explores the spring. She moves carefully through its flames, probing with talismans and using the Fire-Repelling Shield to form a protective red sheath, but cannot resist a Foundation Establishment demon on her own. An Essence Gathering Pill from Li Ximing enables her to complete her foundation after three years of seclusion. Later she rides through the air in white and crimson flames and is assigned the Dry Fire position in the Li Family’s twelve-cultivator Pavilion View refinement. The precise operation of that position is not established. (Chapters 1179, 1193–1195, 1225, 1359, 1510)
Relationships
- Li Ximing: Her powerful benefactor and former task-giver. Their relationship begins in coercion and fear, then becomes one of gratitude and service after he gives her a path to Foundation Establishment and arranges her marriage. (Chapters 1180, 1225, 1237, 1242, 1368)
- Li Zhouming: Her husband by a marriage personally granted by Li Ximing. Their early meetings are formal; later, Shouyu’s quick wit and steadiness complement his more impulsive manner. (Chapters 1242, 1249–1250, 1510, 1687)
- Li Quewan: Her partner in managing spiritual-qi allocation and expanding opportunities for lesser lineages. (Chapter 1510)
- Qingxu Temple: Her original Dao lineage and home. She helps settle its affairs and leaves resources to compensate villagers harmed by the drought during her breakthrough. (Chapters 1195–1197, 1226)
Items
The Fire-Repelling Shield is Shouyu’s dharma artifact: she retrieves it before entering the spring and uses it to protect herself from the flames. She later holds administrative control of Cuoxiang, an ancient Li-family technique artifact used to store spiritual qi; this office does not make it her personal possession. (Chapters 1179, 1303, 1510)
